Lazer Z1 MIPS Helmet

Feel the wind in your hair.

The designers across the pond at Lazer have shown they aren't afraid to resist trends and trust to their own innovative designs when creating high-end road racing helmets. If you're looking for a race-pedigreed lid to protect your cognitive functions as you fly around tight corners and bump elbows in your next criterium, but don't want to be confused for a time trialist or triathlete in an aero helmet, invest in Lazer's Z1 MIPS Helmet. The classic design will protect your head while giving you ventilation at a wide range of speeds from its 31 well-placed vents.

Not satisfied with the protection offered by traditional helmet shapes, Lazer updated the Z1 to include more coverage at the temples in the event of a crash, and it also added side-angle impact protection in the form of MIPS. MIPS, or Multi Directional Impact Protection System, refers to the Swedish technology added to the helmet in the form of a barely-perceptible inner basket. It's designed to move slightly upon impact to absorb the brain-damaging rotational energy generated by side impacts. Before you ride, use Lazer's Advanced Rollsys retention system to secure the helmet in place so it won't slide around or pinch, or to make easy on-the-go fit adjustments as you ride, and when the weather turns cooler, attach Lazer's aeroshell to the outside of the helmet to help conserve heat when you don't want the vents doing their job quite so well.

Oh so Euro.

I haven't yet tested the Z1's protective qualities, but that's not really the point of cycling helmets. The real point is to look Euro—otherwise, we'd all wear full-face moto lids. Ever since Tommeke wore a rainbow version of its predecessor in '06, the Z1 has been the most Euro helmet available. Do yourself a favor, and get the helmet that will make you want to ride rather than the helmet that every other cyclist on your Tuesday night crit startline is wearing.

I've worn a medium in Giro, Bell, and Orbea helmets. Lazer's medium fits me the same.

Super comfortable

You can tell this is a quality helmet as soon as you get your hands on it. The straps are excellent and sit very flat on the side of your face and the rollsys adjustment works great. The only issue I can see is the mips version is more snug than the non mips version so if you are on the borderline between sizes it might be tight. Also I see the shaping of the helmet inside is more for a round head shape instead of a more oval shape.

HERITAGE - DEVELOPMENT - INNOVATION

An inside look at the heritage, development and innovation that can only be found from Lazer Sport!

I measured my head circumference and it measured 57 cm just above my ears. What is the laser z1 size you would recommend?

David - you are perfectly in the middle of the MD. If you want MIPS it adjusts the sizing a bit so you would end on upper end of MD

Get the medium, it covers 55-59cm

Great Fit

I have had Giro Aeon and Specialized Echelon helmets, but nothing fits nearly as well as this Lazer Z1. It really feels like it just melts onto your head and you don't notice it. I needed a new helmet and figured I should go with the MIPS tech, because, why not go all out when it comes to protecting your brain. The Lazer is high quality, light weight, but it is all about the great fit. The dial on the top of the helmet takes getting used to if you have had helmets with the dial in the back, but you don't really need to mess with it once set.

Phenomenal Helmet

After 30 years using top of the line helmets, the Lazer Z1 is a dramatic improvement on all others. It fits better and is really roomy, rollsys is easier to adjust with no pressure points and the Z1 covers more head area front and back. Given the coverage area it's really lightweight and the airflow is exceptional.

I never thought of helmet accessories to use on the bike. Yeah, we all have a helmet bag but that's about it. Lazer takes it to a whole new level with the Z1. Magneto sunglasses completely eliminate long ride temple soreness and behind ear chafing. The Aeroshell is the best winter windshell ever for a helmet. Best of all, LifeBEAM eliminates a the bother of a HRM chest strap and is more accurate. Finally, the Cappucinolock gives a tiny bit of lightweight security for mid-ride "coffee" stops.

Yeah, I'm a geek and I love my fully accessorized Lazer Z1 MIPS.

Light, airy, and very comfortable

I love this helmet because it is light, very-well ventilated, and offers superior protection MIPS technology, while also being the most comfortable helmet I've ever worn. The straps are durable and comfortable against the skin, unlike many other helmets that have thin and uncomfortable straps (looking at you, Giro). The Rollsys fit system is superb; it makes it easy to get the perfect fit, even while riding. This helmet is not the cheapest, but you are getting a premium product.

Also included are a nice storage bag, replacement inner pads, and optional magnets for integrating with Lazer's Magneto sunglasses.

I currently own a Giro Aeon and Specialized Prevail helmet and was looking for something a little different. I decided to give the Lazer Z1 MIPS a shot and am happy that I did. It is definitely light enough for me and it's a little more compact than some of the others that I own. That is, it is not so bulky. It is actually easier to peer back over your shoulder to look at oncoming traffic. The fit is not perfect for me until I tighten the retention system then it feels fine. It almost seems to run a little small at first. It ventilates very well and am happy that it is relatively quiet regarding wind noise (that is an issue for me).

This is the first 'premium' helmet I have ever owned. I have always worn Giro, and currently own an Atmos II helmet. While light and cool, the Atmos can become uncomfortable on longer rides. Not so with the Lazer! It is so comfortable, it really does not even seem like it is there. Perfect fit on my not so perfect noggin. The straps are also a big improvement over the less expensive Giro. They lay perfectly flat and adjust easily for a great fit. The only shortcoming with this helmet may be in the aero department. It is designed to work during the slower speeds while climbing, and it does ventilate very well. On the flat, fast (21+mph) roads, I do notice quite a lot of wind noise. I suspect that some increased drag might be the result of the great venting. I plan to try another helmet when speed is needed on the flats, the Lazer Z1 will be on my head in the hills and when the ride is long!
And of note: Protection with the Lazer Z1 appears to be far better than any other helmet I have ever used. And, it looks great!

Excellent ventilation, hardly notice it's on your head. MIPS doesn't hamper fit, nice esthetics, good choice of options.

Love it!

I currently own Lazer Genesis helmet which I needed to replace after I was involved in a bike accident. I got hit by pick up truck on my left side of my body and landed on my right side of my body and banged my lower right side of head on the pavement. Thankfully I survived crash. The design of this helmet should cover most of the head. Love the design and the extra room around the ear to wear my prescription sunglasses. The size of the helmet runs a little smaller due to MIPS layer. I had to return for a size large, and even this size fits perfectly and does not feel big like the Genesis.

Best MIPS helmet

I've been riding with Lazer helmets for about 15 years and this addition feels just like my old Helium. I tried several other MIPS type helmets and found there was too much movement. This one is no different feeling than my none MIPS Lazer and that's a good thing. This is a super fitting helmet my only complaint is the tighting barrel is not centered correctly and is a bit hard to adjust. It wasn't enough for the bother of a return. I'd highly recommend it.

superb fit

I have owned 3 helmets over the past year, and a different helmet every year previously. They included Bell, Giro, Smith, Garneau... But I have to say that the fit to the R1 beat them all. My head can be a little hard to fit, not the size, I'm always a S, they just don't fit perfect, they are ok, but the Z1 set a new level in fit and comfort. I would definitely recommend the Z1!

An upgrade!

I had been riding in an older Lazer on the road bike for a few years, and was having a hard time giving it up. I ended up getting one of these (MIPS was a big selling point) and haven't been happier. Besides having new padding that has reduced sweat in my eyes and made my head more comfy, the helmet also has a great hi-viz color and style to protect me while riding in higher traffic areas.
I have yet to ride it without a buff or cap underneath due to the season, but I have no reservations about the ventilation.

A great value!

Great Helmet!

Had a bad fall recently and blew up my old helmet so I needed to search for a new one. I wanted a MIPS helmet (why not?) so tried this and the Giro Synthe. Both were light but this fit better. The roll system is a breeze and located in a good spot on the top so adjusting it on the fly is easier. The fitting system also snugs the sides to give it a totally adjustable fit. It also feels lighter on the head and after a few rides has great ventilation. I have had Giro,Bell and now the Lazer high end helmets but this is the best helmet I have ever worn. only complaint is the strap could use a soft cover for under the chin. It also comes with a cover so looking forward to using it in the rain and next winter!
