Why We Like The TX2 Approach Shoe

Frequent creek crossings, steep scrambles, and technical approaches call for us to lace up the La Sportiva TX2 Approach Shoe before hitting the trail. With a quick-drying polyester mesh upper, non-slip lining, and protective rubber rand, the TX2 is well-equipped to put the handle on just about any terrain we encounter. La Sportiva even kept the TX2 lightweight—just over nine ounces per pair—so the shoes can easily be clipped to our harness with the carabiner-accommodating heel loops or stuffed into our pack, without weighing us down or making us feel off balance.

SO MUCH TRACTION

I have never in my life experienced a shoe with this much traction. Heading up some sketchy approaches in Cochise felt like walking on flat ground because of how much grip and support they had. They're super light, easy to store with the cords on the back, and so comfortable. They're also pretty solid as climbing shoes. If you're looking for an approach shoe (or honestly just a new shoe in general) get it NOW!!!

Sole peeling after 1 month

I bought these as a lighter alternative to my TX3 and to climb Mt. Moran. I was wondering given how light they were if they would hold up to the trip. They ended up being great for the most part. I think they may have been a bit soft for carrying a 60lb pack and rolled a bit while hopping boulders but the grip was fantastic and they were extremely comfortable. Fast forward a month and after using them fairly regularly but on well maintained approach trails, the sole on the left has started to separate and the laces are showing some premature signs of wear. I'll be looking to warranty these out, as it's pretty inexcusable for a brand that builds gear for rugged outdoor adventures to have a product fail when the tread shows virtually no wear. I think I'll go back to a tighter TX3.

All around greatness!

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I purchased these shoes to replace my TX3s which were on their last leg. Since then they have been put through just about everything from long hikes to begin jammed in cracks. I've done a fair bit of climbing in them and used them to summit the Grand Teton. They handled the hiking, scrambling and climbing extremely well. They seem to be softer than the other approach shoes that I've worn but are very comfortable. The only durability issue I've had have been the laces wearing out quickly. Other than that, I think they're great!

Not for me

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I really wanted to like these but after an hour of up and down on steep trails I felt a seam rubbing. I developed a blister on my left 2nd toe. It was worse going downhill. The fit is snug but appropriate given the shoes purpose. They are light, breathable, and have great grip all around. They just don?t agree with my feet which is not typical for me. I?m going to return them and try something else.

Incredible Approach Shoes

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Over the past few years, I've worn these shoes pretty much everywhere, and they have performed better than I had even hoped. Their breathability, stability, and comfort makes them the ideal approach shoe. My first time wearing these, I actually forgot that I was wearing them u til I was ready to clean the 5.9 route I had just sent... I would always choose my muira's over these for a climb, but that send really inspired confidence with these shoes. I at least know they'll grip on any kind of rock! Last year I visited Mt. Baker and hiked up and down on fully snow covered trails in July. I wouldn't reccommend that, as my feet were soaking wet, but the shoes held up well, even after "skating" halfway down the snow covered paths. I fully recommend this shoe and haven't experienced any of the durability issues that others have posted about.

Super light and amazing

A super light approach shoe that doubles as a great scrambling shoe. Perfect for multi pitch climbs, strap them together and then to your harness. Easily traverse the descents. Or for walking around town, even use them at the gym as a low profile workout shoe. They do lack a stiffness the bigger shoes would provide, such as a board lasted approach shoes. I wear 11½ US men's, and found a 44.5 fits perfect for low angle climbing.

Sportiva has done better

I've owned 2 pairs, a leather pair and the synthetic pair. Both pairs had their loops in the back break within three outings. The synthetic pair shredded quickly. They climb well but suffer from durability issues. I can't recommended these shoes. Sportiva has been my brand for over 20 years but I'm gonna look elsewhere for approach shoes until they get their act together.

Light weight and dependable

I bought these after looking for something light to scramble in, but with enough dexterity for fast technical running on the approach. Great light and flexible option if you don’t mind feeling the trail beneath your feet.

Great lightweight and sticky approach shoe

These shoes are awesome for approaching climbs where you'll need to take shoes up and clip them onto your harness or throw them in a day pack. They don't weigh much at all so you hardly notice you have approach shoes with you. They are comfortable enough to do fast mountain scrambles in and rock hopping on your way to alpine crags. I wear them everywhere since they're so light and comfortable. For an approach shoe they are pretty stylish and look good wearing them around town.

Don't trust the bungee system!

These are comfortable and light approach shoes that I definitely like. However, just want to put this out as a warning not to trust the bungee pairing system for use on a harness. The bungee system failed while the shoes were clipped to my harness and one of my shoes fell off and was gone forever. I had to do the descent and entire hike out of the Wind River Range with one rock climbing shoe on my foot. I like everything about the shoe except the design flaw of the bungee system when attaching them to a harness. I wish there was a way to bungee them together and also be able to clip hard points on both shoes.
