Maverink Climbing Shoe

The difference between modern and traditional climbing is extravagant. What used to be all about finding ways up the summit turned into finding the hardest way up the summit. It's no doubt that modern first ascents were once deemed impossible by previous generations, and the youngest climbers continue to shock and amaze by gripping imaginary holds and pulling through. The La Sportiva Men's Maverink Climbing Shoe assists adolescents and teenagers by helping them train in the gym, push grades, and climb with the utmost power. Its aggressive, asymmetric profile performs best on overhangs, and No Edge technology gives more surface contact to grip the most micro footholds ever conceived. La Sportiva equipped the Maverink with P3 technology to ensure a proper downturn  throughout the life of this shoe, and the unlined leather upper stretches as the feet of adolescents continue to grow so as not to cause any problems in the future.

My top pick for climbing shoes

I’ve lost track of how many pairs of Maverink shoes I’ve had. It would feel weird to climb in anything else at this point especially a shoe with an edge. At first it’s difficult to adjust to this shoe if you’re used to a super ridged downturned shoe but stick it out. After having these so long I think they made my toes stronger. The shoe is flexible enough to bend with your toes and that helps me connect the tension from my core and stay engaged all the way through my leg and into my toe. It might even give me more reach. I notice it especially when I have to fully extend on an overhanging climb without my feet cutting. They are amazing for toe hooks. The shoe is so low profile that it isn’t awkward or lumpy to toe hook with. Aggressive heel hooks aren’t ideal though since these are slip ons. The best part is how well these shoes preform on small sloped foot holds. A very stiff shoe or a shoe with an edge wouldn’t be able to compete. As fair a sizing goes I’m usually a 37-38 in la sportiva shoes but I had to downsize to a 35 for these so keep that in mind when buying online. Maverinks are the perfect shoes for slabs and steep routes alike while being really comfortable. The only downfall is crack climbing since there’s no padding to keep the rock from digging into your foot. If these ever get discontinued I hope that someone will let me know so I can buy 20+ pairs and I won’t have to go climb without them.

Great shoes, futura-ish feel

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Basically a slip-on, flat/less aggressive version of the futuras (for much cheaper). Not quite as good for toe or heel hooks, but same awesome super flexible and sensitive feel. Because this is a slipper with a good amount of elastic on top (which will also stretch as the shoes break in), my feet slip around a decent amount. Futuras fit a little better, but took longer to break in and were much less comfortable at first. The maverinks felt great from the start. Like futuras, the rubber layer is thin, so they do seem to wear faster - I have holes in the rubber in 3 out of 4 toes (I bought 2 pairs). But I got good use of them. I wore them a bit outside as well as inside and had good results. I am considering trying a resole - will update if I do. I do size down for la sportivas. I got a 35 first and then a 34.5; they stretch out quite a bit with the leather and elastic. I wear a 34.5 in futuras, which also run large, and am a 5.5/6 US women's street shoe, maybe 35.5/36 normal European size.

Best climbing shoes I’ve ever had

My biggest problem when buying new shoes is the time necessary to break them in and usually they are painful to wear for 4-6 weeks. However the Maverink shoes were so comfortable even from the first day! I was so surprised I could climb 6c/7a in brad-new shoes. I understand the production for this line has stopped. This is so sad because I literrally love these shoes. Best comfort+performance combination. Any other option that is similar to Maverink?

One of my favorite shoes

Being over 30 years old I not exactly the intended market for this shoe, but I don't care. This shoe is by far my favorite gym shoe and one of the best at smearing i ever had! (Been climbing for over 11 years).by the way It is also mind blogging comfortable! My only downside to it is that because of it's soft nature it is not the best for standing on really small features on steep terrain and foot jamming. If you see this shoe on your local store buy it!

Fantastic shoe!

Great and versatile shoe! I am not a kid, but a lightweight intermediate boulderer/sport climber (55 kg, >6B) who has very sensitive feet, hence I don't do well wearing tight performance shoes and I generally don't really need them. I needed something more technical than beginners shoes though, and this pair definitely hits the spot. I can wear these for hours in the gym and still be comfortable. Due to not needing super high performance, I got them only a half size down from my street size (39 -> 38,5) and in retrospect, I could have gone down a full size or even more and they would've still been comfortable and lasted a bit longer, as they have now stretched enough to start slipping at the heel when doing technical hooks (but it has been close to a year!). They are very sensitive shoes, and in my experience they do well on slab as well as steeper overhangs. I think these are great for adults as well and I will be getting them again!

Maverinks are the Move!

Speed climber here! Anyone interested in taking up speed climbing, or finding themselves in need of a different pair of speed shoes, look no further because the Maverinks are the move! They're soft, but not terribly so. I still get support on the speed wall, and the rubber provides plenty of traction. They're also easy to slip on and off in between runs, a huge plus. There's no velcro or laces to worry about. Also a huge plus. All in all, a great shoe.

Great Gym Shoe

Got these for gym climbing at my local bouldering gym. I prefer to climb in slippers, indoors and outdoors, but I have lace ups for harder outdoor climbing as well. These are perfect for the gym. They're comfortable and I'm able to toe in on pretty small stuff, despite the fact they're not on a super aggressive last. For a slipper the heel stays on pretty well; the ability to slip out of a heel hook is the down side of wearing slippers. The no-edge technology took some getting used to (I switched over from 5.10 Moccasyms due to Adidas's recent quality failures) and the change over from being precise to stand on an edge to being more precise about my toe took about two weeks to fully get used to. I climb V6 to V7 and the no edge works well for getting on tiny foot chips. I find, oddly, it makes the biggest difference when I cut feet or throw a foot out to something far; I just have a lot better idea of where my foot is and I am more able to hit the hold and stick. Similarly, the rubber seems sticky; although, I think they slip slightly more than the 5.10's it's not significantly different. And they look sweet. Personally, I think they run a bit long/large. I can climb in a 39.5 or 39 (I used both in the Moccasym slippers), but I got these in a 38.5 and they feel just right. One con, the inside of these shoes got VERY smelly within a month. I've not had this happen in any other shoe; they'll get smelly for the day, but generally the odor goes away. I'm guessing the synthetics in this shoe are particularly odor-trapping. They got smelly and stayed smelly. So, I got a good odor spray. Anticipate you'll need to make this extra expenditure for shoe upkeep. Pros: -Comfortable -Precise for footwork -Good heel fit (for a slipper) -Sticky rubber -Cool color Cons: -Run large, be aware -Materials get smellier than the average

Overall, amazing climbing shoes.

I'm also an Adult that has purchased these shoes for climbing. Background: I climb avidly, weekdays 1-2 hours daily, and weekend 3-5 hour sessions with friends. I primarily boulder (V6-7), and climb outdoors (whenever I conditions are right). Review: These shoes are some of the most comfortable climbing shoes I've ever purchased. To put things in perspective, I've purchased, cycle through, and currently own Dragos, Booster S, Skwamas, and 5-10 Moccs. The climbing shoes that I wear 90% of the time are the Maverinks (10% being Skwamas for hard edging and overhung routes). The shoes themselves thrive when it comes to friction slab work. For everything else, it's never a question of whether my shoes are limiting factors to my success. They're sensitive shoes that allow me to focus on my footwork, but allow me to execute heel-hooks and toe-hooks as needed. Edging on very small chips can be difficult, but not impossible. Overall, they're a wonderful pair of shoes I can wear for hours and a shoe ideal for training. (My opinion) Sizing: Street/Casual wear I wear Size 44-45 EU (Size 10-11 US - Sizes vary depending on brand). For climbing, I drop down to 42-43 EU (Size 8-9 US - Sizes vary depending on brand). For perspective: Booster S (Scarpa): 42.5 Loose - Decent shoe, never considered wearing them for a long session. Dragos (Scarpa): 43.5 Very Loose - Purposely purchased these shoes larger, Air Pockets are present, but still allow me to get the job done (heels, toes, slab, edging). I can wear them for 2-3 hours comfortably. Moccs (Five-ten): 42.5 Tight/Loose-heels - Unable to execute very strong heel hooks, but can wear for hours. (3+ hours) Skwamas (La Sportiva): 42 Snug/Tight - My go-to shoe when I want to Send my current projects. I love these things, but cannot wear prolong periods of time (2-3+ Hours) Maverinks (La Sportiva): 42 Tight/Perfect- Can wear for (3+ Hours). I love them. Best of luck,

David

Perfect Training Tool

I am an adult who grabbed a pair for training, gym / comp climbing. The Maverink is soft, comfortable and sensitive. Perfect for improving footwork in the gym both bouldering and sport climbing. Designed for younger climbers, the fit is low volume and hugs the foot perfectly without putting too much stress on your gnarly climber toes. Down size at least 2 to 2.5 sizes for fit and performance. I am a US 9.5 (EU 42.5) and downsized to a (EU 38.5). With a less tensioned P3 rand, the Maverink is comfortable enough for an entire training session. No Edge technology helps with precise foot placement and sensitivity while improving outsole wear. I climb outside with something stiffer in the midsole and with more rubber coverage like the Skwama or Solution but view the Maverink as a perfect training tool. It will always have a place in my quiver! If you want a well designed, minimal, cheap training shoe or are a younger climber wanting to take your climbing to the next level, you can't go wrong. Plus, you can customize them...sick!!
