Super-light and incredibly strong.

Look no further than the Komperdell Carbon Expedition Tour 4 Trekking Poles if you're seeking a super-light, incredibly strong set of trekking poles for alpine touring and rigorous expeditions. Standing up to the rigors of ski touring and alpine mountaineering, these four-section collapsible poles feature a sturdy high-density aluminum upper matched with an incredibly stiff, lightweight carbon mid-section. Expedition medium-grips offer an ergonomic, supple feel for comfort and plenty of dexterity. Plus, the Power Lock 3.0 mechanism features high-density aluminum for reduced weight and maximum holding power.

Each pole tips the scales at a feathery 7.7-ounces, collapsing down to 17.7-inches for low-bulk storage when every cubic inch of pack space matters. Its adjustable length accommodates a wide variety of users, lengthening from 47.25 to 57.1-inches. Other technical features include Ice-flex Tungsten/Carbide tips for gripping into firm snow and icy surfaces and corresponding Ice-flex baskets for support in snow and variable alpine conditions.

Great poles!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I really like these poles. I use them as normal trekking poles for hiking and they are tough, fairly light, and most importantly tall enough to not need an extender to use a pyramid tarp. The only downside is that they are also really tall if you are using a flat tarp and a storm comes in. Great poles though.

Do I get a pair or just one pole?

Amazing Amazing!

This pole is high quality. Defiantly the exact pole I was looking for to tour this season. The first thing I love about this pole is how easy it is to change the height of the pole so that when you are going up hill then down hill you can change the height to accommodate for the situation easily and without any slipping!!!

Second is the way the poles screw together. The individual sections take quite a few turns to lock together and this takes a minute, but it ensures there is zero chance the mid sections can come apart or wobble. Moreover, the joints where they screw together are very strong and by no means a weak point.

Third thing I love is that these poles have nice grips that go lower down than the area normally considered the handle so that you can even easier adjust your grip based on the steepness of the terrain.

The only thing that I can say bad is the little ring that attaches the snow baskets to the poles is really really difficult to get on. Then the little ring that holds the powder baskets onto the pole snapped the first time I put them on. It is a really minor thing, but I wish it was easier to take them off and on so that they could fold up on your pack slimmer because it is nearly impossible to get them on and off with ease. Forget trying to do it in the cold on the mountain. As well i wish it came with two or three pairs of these rings because they are such a critical and breakable part.

my heroes

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love these poles. They're light, feel laterally stiff compared to others I've used, and are durable so far. As of my writing this, I've got 70+ miles on these bad boys and they only show cosmetic scratches from me carelessly throwing them on the ground. The foam on the grips feels especially nice. It's like shaking hands with an old friend who has really good hygiene. As I mentioned on my comment on the other review, Komperdell claims that they will repair the pole within three years of purchase no matter what happened. Not bad!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

The third time I used these poles, I planted one on a decent (powder day), it went deep and broke in half! I paid $179.95 for them... based upon my experience, definitely not worth the purchase. It happened over 30 days after purchase so doom on me and no return. Ouch!
