Karakoram Prime SL Split Snowboard Binding

Minimal weight, maximum efficiency.

Looking to shave grams off your current touring setup, but don't want to sacrifice solid board connection, energy transfer, and touring efficiency? An uncompromising solution to saving serious weight on the long uphill skin, the Karakoram Prime SL Split Snowboard Binding is ridiculously lightweight with high levels of energy transfer and rock-solid board connection.

A bit softer than Karakoram's carbon-infused bindings, the Prime SL Split Binding features an Airflow highback that's cored out for a bit more lateral flex and an ultralight feel. However, it's still plenty responsive when you're laying into heelside turns and slashing through secret powder stashes. This highback features Ride-Stride forward lean that quickly toggles between Ride and Walk modes with a 1/4-turn of the forward lean adjuster. In Walk mode, the -8 degree forward lean elongates your stride to conserve energy on the long uphill skin. Ride mode delivers 0 to 22 degrees of forward lean (2 degree adjustable increments) for quick-turning response when you're charging steeps.

This mid-flexing split binding uses Karakoram's Prime Interface for a completely solid feel underfoot, without unnerving seam slop or high-speed chatter. Its Solid Ride four-point attachment increases your stance options (-30 to 30 degrees) and improves ergonomics. Four wide preloaded contact points direct energy to the edges for unmatched response and control when you're riding high-consequence terrain.

Ditching traditional climbing wires for a two-height riser that deploys with the simple flick of your pole basket, the Flip-Speed Riser conquers mellow approaches and more demanding ascents alike. Engage the shorter riser on long, flatter approaches or flip the taller riser during intimidating, steeper climbs. Additionally, there's a heel lock-down feature that's ideal for skating across flats and side-steeping small hills. This lock-down has a load equivalent to DIN 6.

Maximizing efficiency, the Prime Interface uses Karakoram's quick-release touring bracket, which allows for quick-and-easy transitions from touring to riding without taking your foot out of the binding. Total changeover time is roughly two minutes, and that includes taking off your skins and storing everything in your pack. Best of all, the Prime Interface has no moving parts, so you never have to worry about losing parts in the snow.

These bindings rule!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These are definitely one of those purchases that you pay for what you get. Yes, these bindings definitely hit the budget but boy are they worth it. The lightest bindings I have ever ridden, and with that still a solid responsive binding when needed. Thery're so many diferent ways these bindings can be used that is quite empressive.

Best Splitboard Binding I've ever Ridden

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

All it took to have me sold on these bindings was making one turn in steep terrain! The Prime system rides way better than any puck based system. In fact, I will argue that these bindings even ride better than your solid board bindings.

They lack heavy accouterments like EVA padding and plastic footbeds exchanged for precise, high performance materials. The thought in design and craftsmanship really show. This is clearly a product designed by engineers that snowboard.

Ride aside, the interface is well thought out and easy to set up and adjust.

Compared to a puck system binding, the changeover on the Prime is effortless, and is more tolerant of snow and ice build up. I definitely have been able to transition faster since buying my Karakoram setup.

I liked these so much, I actually sold my Union bindings and just got Karakoram's quiver connectors. That way, I can use these bindings on My split, my all mountain board, and my deep powder swallowtail. This makes traveling a breeze- I just throw one set of bindings, and my boards stack up like there is nothing mounted to them. In under a minute, I can change what board I'm riding based on conditions!

Great review Elias!
