Third time's the charm.
They say that the third time is often the charm, and we're keen to agree with that sentiment when it comes to the Industry Nine Trail270 Boost 27.5in Wheelset. As the third generation in I9's Trail rim lineup, the Trail270 takes pieces of technology from the Trail245 that it replaces, and elevates the durability with help from design elements from the Enduro305 and Grade300 rims. The result is the most impact-resistant trail rim to hit the dirt from Industry Nine, ready to charge into the backcountry for week long adventures, or send it down a trail of undulating rollers, perfectly arcing berms, and hero dirt.
With the yearning for wider tires echoing across the market, it was only natural for innovators at I9 to push the rim width of the much-loved Trail245 outward, stretching to a 27mm internal, so that riders can equip themselves with the beefier tires they crave. This wider internal rim allows for a shorter and more tapered bead wall, which improves flat resistance and overall tire strength. The wide internals extend the recommended tire size from a 2.2-inch all the way to wide-trail 2.5-inch tires. This makes for a plusher ride, with the ability to run lower tire pressures to soak up roots and rocks, and keep you planted when you roll a little too fast into a loose berm. As with the Trail245's, the Trail270's are made with a reliable aluminum rim. Despite the expanded girth on the Trail270's, they claim to scale in at the exact same weight as their predecessor. While carbon rims no doubt have quite a large following, we find that the alloy hoops used by Industry Nine capture a price point near impossible from carbon, paired with reliably stiff control that offers just the right amount of flex to keep the trail from jostling you around. On top of the wider rim, the Trail270's also host Industry Nine's updated rim graphics, aiming to please more riders with a stealthy silver and black design that contours around the rim, skipping out on flashy colors that clash with some rider's motifs.
Industry Nine's signature hubs are largely responsible for the brand's enthusiastic following, and the Torch hubs used in the Trail270s don't disappoint. They're laced to the rims with Industry Nine's machined 7075-T6 aluminum spokes, which thread directly into the hubs. This distinctive choice eliminates weakness at the spoke/hub interface and allows for increased surface area for a stronger wheel system overall. The hubs themselves rely on Industry Nine's proprietary pawl design, which features two sets of three pawls phased three degrees from each other to provide 120 points of contact and a snappy three degrees of engagement. The rear hub was tested to withstand an excessive 700ft/lbs of torque — roughly what a diesel truck puts out — which should put any thoughts of slippage or power loss on rocky, technical cruxes firmly out of your mind.
