Nice fit, should have a liner

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Well made, nice stylish fit, good wool, albeit a little thin. I’m curious to see how it will hold up on a cold day without additional insulation underneath, especially since there’s no liner to help block the wind. The lack of an inner liner makes it feel a little unfinished, even though it’s apparent the design was intended this way.

So far, its excellent

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a merino jacket. Its not super heavy, but probably the thickest merino they sell. Nice large pockets and good fit. Also a large hood. My main worry is that I will accidentally stain the light color, but it does look very nice. Check the model size before you order, I was worried I would be too wide for a medium, but it fits perfect!

Downsize, add liner, and its a steal...

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

The wool quality, the cut, and the construction of this garment suggest the original, unaffordable, price. Apart from the zipper, closures, and some subtle sleeve reflection, this is a few fashionably cut, well-sewn, slabs of thick, dense merino wool. The relaxed fit necessitates dropping a whole size (unless you're going for a Garfield's owner/ 90's detective look--belt not included. Tried a M, and decided to exchanging for a S. I can't remember the last time I wore a small overcoat. The arms and shoulders are nicely cut, the relaxed is more in the chest and hips. I'm optimistic about how this configuration will scale down to a S. ITS SIMPLE: the thick/dense slabs of well-cut wool that comprise the jacket speak for themselves! I love the cut, color and simplicity, but I will definitely be adding a smooth, thin liner for texture and color contrast. The unstructured hood could use a liner for weight and shape. Add a liner to this Jacket to make it the perfect deal. Oh, and it's warm. In the few minuets that I was trying it on over a light sweater inside, the heat that was building up underneath the jacket was becoming alarming; I had to take it off kinda in a hurry. Did i mention the wool is thick? If you like minimalist chic outerwear this is a steal at the sale price, once the liner's in.

Great but…

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This is a great jacket with plenty of style to work for most occasions. The only issues I really have are the extremely loose fit (fine for layering I suppose) and the weirdly large/awkward hood (I haven’t worn it with a beanie yet but imagine that would help it to feel less awkward). It’s not super warm but it is warm and as mentioned, layering would help being that it’s fairly loose. Overall, I’m happy with the order but think I should have tried a medium (I have zero tops or jackets that are a medium). For my size, I have a fairly muscular chest, shoulders, and arms.

Great look and function, but order down

Great material and look. I love the simplicity of it. I wore it during days it was super chill in the morning but warmed up in the afternoon and I was comfortable at both times. It’s keeps warm but can also allow to breathe. I haven’t worn it during very cold days yet (ie Canadian winter). The hood has just enough room not to be to cumbersome, although it could have more structure. Fit is way loose. I’d even say oversized. I usually wear slim medium but ordered a small, and I can wear a suit under it. Order a size down.

Not all the way there

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] One of my favorite jackets, from any maker, is Icebreaker's Boulder. I've had a Boulder since 2011. Unfortunately, while I like the style and 100% wool fabric of the Ainsworth, I wish it was as fully featured as the Boulder. Specifically, I miss the full lining, the laminated wind resistant membrane, a full range of pockets, and hood adjustments. I knew all this going in; that's why I didn't buy the Ainsworth until it was hugely discounted here. Bottom line: I like the Ainsworth but I don't LOVE it.
