Versatile!

  • Size Bought: Medium

I've used this jacket for so many different things that I figured versatile should be the heading for this review. It is seriously my go-to piece. It can be used as a mid-layer or outer-layer. I actually snowboarded in it two days in a row, it was the piece that I started my morning with for splitboarding, shedded the layer once I got warmed up, and then put it on again for the descent.

I wear it almost daily, the fabric is so comfortable and I love that it is a slim fit. It stretches, which makes it nice for multiple adventures.

The price might be a little steep but the fabric and quality of Houdini really shine in this product. It will last you for years and with the timeless design, you won't have to worry about it going out of fashion in the years to come. It is more of an investment since you will be reaping the benefits for so many years in the future!

Tumbling Blue

I have bought 4 of these. 1 as a gift for a friend who is world traveler. She takes it everywhere. I have bought 3 for myself But one was stolen by my sister because it’s so awesome. My point is these things rule. My only “complaint” is the colors do not match the website. The tumbling blue, IMO anyway, looks very baby blue on the website. It is not baby blue at all. It is a much more “stormy” blue. I love it. I could be wrong but I swear this XL is a bit larger than my last two. They are expensive but they last forever and don’t wear out or look old even after years of washing. In the fall and winter I wear these like a uniform. It can be worn in all situations from the mountain to almost acting like a modern technical cardigan at other times.

Hey John! Thanks for the comment. I recently picked one of these up and your review couldn't be more spot on. They do last forever, which in my opinion, justifies the cost.

    Amazing fleece, warm and breathing.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I took this fleece as my mid layer to my trip to Himalayan mountains, Nepal.

I was wearing it in the evening times when it becoming colder and also morning times when it's still cold, especially higher in the mountains.
The fleece is feeling very warm, but still breathable during the morning hike until the sun goes out and I was taking it off.
One thing to be careful with this fleece - it absorbs water like a sponge, so be careful not to get wet!
This fleece runs small, so I took the XL and it sits well and fitted. Overall i am very happy with this fleece.

    Size up and its perfect

I normally wear a large and went with XL based on other reviews. So happy I did! It fits perfect and still has a trim fit. If your super slim you can probably stick with your normal size. It's still summer here so I haven't worn it in the elements yet but you can tell this is super warm, very high quality, and looks awesome.

    Favorite Fleece

I love this piece. It is super comfortable, performs well and looks good. The sleeves are long and I can actually use the thumb holes with my long arms. This makes a great spring/fall outer piece and an excellent mid-layer in the winter. It is trim fitting so keep that in mind when ordering.

    Weird color. Awesome quality again

This is my 3rd power houdi. I have two and have purchased a third for my gf. This one is awesome. They are all great. Same as always. This one is blue steel. It's a weird color. Sometimes it looks blue sometimes it looks green. I don't love the color but it was 50% off. I am getting fat and weigh 200lbs and am 6 ft and get the Xlarge. They fit tight. If you can get one on sale definitely snap it up. My gf takes hers on every adventure. Mine is my go-to mid layer while skiing. I Just love these things.

Single most versatile piece of gear ever

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I took a lot of time researching and trying different pieces of gear to fit what I was looking for. I needed a warm enough layer that could get me to the top of alpine peaks, something cool enough to be the only piece during long treks, and something that could be as versatile as possible - being the only piece like it that I wanted to own/carry.

Not ever having seen or owned Houdini products, I wasn't sure about the reviews I was seeing, and if the price was worth it or not. It was a great deal more money than most competitors that matched in craftsmanship, but this piece had so many more benefits. If you do your research, you will see what I mean.

This is my favorite, go to piece for warmth. It goes climbing, mountaineering, hiking, walking, relaxing, and running with me in a combination of uses and layers. Sometimes outer layer, sometimes mid layer, sometimes base layer. The material and construction and craftsmanship is the best I have seen.

This is going to be a bit warmer than most other mid layer fleeces, due to the Polartec Power Stretch which is amazing. I find this to be the best all around mountain fleece for 4 seasons.

      Very Solid Fleece

Are you looking for a fleece that provides Warmth and Range of Motion? Look no further! This Houdini product can be used for a range of activities from running to mountain sports. The fit is rather trim, but looks very nice and has a modern tech style that can go nicely with a pair of Lulus or under your arcteryx jacket on the mountain. Only knock on this fleece is that it does tend to hold odor so regular washing is necessary (not like a merino wool piece) so I would not recommend it on long hut trips if skiing or snowshoeing. Overall, great piece that performs very well and looks great. If you are looking to purchase Houdini products or anything on the site please give me a ring and I will personalize your experience.

      Warmth at its finest

I absolutely love this thing. The biggest complaint I have is that it is often time too warm to wear while I'm inside, which I can live with. When I rock it out and about though, it keeps me very warm in 30 degree weather with just a T-shirt underneath. The two way zipper is great for climbing, allowing you wear this comfortably while giving your partner the encouragement they need to send hard.

The fit is definitely on the slimmer side and the major benefit for me is that the arms were long enough. I have incredibly long arms which makes it difficult to size myself most of the time. Size L usually fits my torso but the arms are usually a bit too short. Not with the Power Houdi Fleece! The sleeve length is just right!

Definitely one of the warmest and most comfortable fleece jackets that I own and if you have longer arms, Houdini is definitely worth checking out!

      Lanky man clothing!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size

Despite Rob's suggestion that I get the XL, I did go with the large due to my obsession with fitted clothes and no bagginess.
It is quite long-armed - i think I've found the perfect brand! My 208cm wingspan just fits into the long, long arms on the L without much pull on the thumb tabs. On my body the jacket doesn't bulge much, just how I like it, but I could indeed have gone with the XL I reckon.
The material is light and fluffy but I do wonder how warm and windproof this is going to be when winter comes to the antipodes. I'll definitely be taking this to Japan this January, hoping it will be warm cause it's definitely a cool looking jacket!

Post-Japan edit. I used this in Japan recently and actually, I thought the warmth was a little bit lacking. I think the outer is just lightweight enough that it's not good at stopping the wind, and the material is just a bit too lightweight to keep me warm around the 5-10c temperature with a thermal underneath. A bit disappointed with the price:warmth ratio, but it's still stylish.

      Not worth the full price

If you can find it on sale, pick it up. Also, if you're a medium, order a large.

      Love. Love. Love.

At first you might wonder why this thing is so expensive because it doesn't seem so special when you first get it. But then you start to wear it and wear it and wear it and pretty soon you have it on all the time. It is nice and warm but not super warm. It fits very close to your body. I am 6ft and a soft 195 and I got the xl. If you have a belly (like me) at all it will show but that's your fault not the hoodies. The arms are long but easily slide up and are great. The cuffs and the thumb holes are really good. The collar and hood are amazing and are probably my fave aspect. It is very stretchy. The sewing is fantastic. The navy is a true dark navy. I have already bought another for a friend. If you're on a budget there are other polartecpro garmets out there for cheaper---just not as sustainably made.

This is a great hoodie if you want a high quality performance hoodie, not just for hanging around. It's also absurdly comfortable and great for hanging around, but if that's all you plan on doing you can probably save some money with another option.

I don't actually own this, but today as I was heading out on a lunch ride on some nearby mountain bike trails I noticed it was snowy pretty heavily. All I had was a short sleeve jersey, so I borrowed this hoodie from a fellow Backcountry employee. That was a great decision. It is super soft and comfy, and SUPER stretchy so it felt great riding. As far as a warm fleece goes the breathability was satisfactory. I definitely had to un-zip by the top of the 1,000 vert climb, but that is to be expected of pretty much anything. Then bombing back down I zipped it up and it did an awesome job keeping me warm and shedding snow. What snow did accumulate and melt on it, dried super quickly once I was back in the office.

Bottom line... this thing definitely works for outdoor pursuits. Fit is definitely trim, I'm either a Large or XL depending on the shirt and I'm definitely an XL for this. Since it is advertised as a trim fit, I'm marking it true to size.

        Dynamic, comfortable, quality hoody

This hoody seems to have the perfect combination of features which makes it a great choice for casual wear as well as a high-performance outdoor garment. The Beyond Blue color is a good looking dark blue. The fit does not run small per se, but the cut is certainly athletic. There's no bagginess; it'd be hard to fit anything thicker than a long sleeve base layer underneath, but there'd be absolutely no need for anything else--this thing is warm. And it's so soft and fuzzy inside that you will want to wear it next to skin. The fabric itself is light and soft; extremely comfortable. The cuffs are large and have big thumboles. Sleeves are tight fitting, not suffocating but I can't really push them up my arms very far. Not a problem, the fit will help the hoody layer well underneath a shell, but would keep me from wearing the hoody for a high-output activity on a cool-not-cold day. The 2-way zip is a nice feature that allows you to unzip the jacket from the top or the bottom, or both at the same time-- which certainly helps the venting situation, especially in windy conditions when you don't want to expose your neck but really need to release some heat. The neck coverage on the collar is amazing, sits right below my lips and completely covers my throat and jaw when fully zipped. With the hood still down but with the jacket zipped up, my neck is completely swaddled; with the hood up my entire head is tightly covered. Enough room for a winter hat underneath, but no extra room for gusts of wind to get in. Much more of a performance-fitting hood than a casual-fit hood, yet with the hood down and the jacket fully zipped it looks very stylish while being extremely warm.
The pocket openings initially seemed to be slightly small, but then I realized that they were the perfect size to allow my hands to sit comfortably inside without any extra room for air to seep in. There's also a media port for headphones in one of the pockets, which is such a small but nice detail.
Overall this is a great looking and fitting stylish hoody which is extremely warm, light and comfortable. It has a high price point, but the high attention to the detail put into the design and construction is noticeable throughout and makes the piece worth the price. I will immediately start wearing this hoody around town, and I'm really looking forward to being able to get the most out of its features come wintertime.

I just got my Houdini Houdi and have to say it one of the coolest, softest and most comfortable fleece hoodies I've ever put on. I like the sleek look and nice, trim fit - it can be worn as an outer layer during the fall, and I think it;s going to be a great midlayer this winter. Psyched to have Houdini on Backcountry!
