Tatra II GTX Hiking Boot

Hanwag's been making shoes for almost a century, so it has had plenty of time to dial in the design of hiking boots. The design of the last, and they have many, is a particular focus for Hanwag in designing a boot that is comfortable for every foot. The Tatra GTX Hiking Boot is one of its most versatile, all-around designs, offering the fit, durability, and quality this German company is known for. The velvety nubuck leather upper of the Tatra is backed with a GORE-TEX membrane that offers waterproof protection in nasty weather and conditions but is still breathable so your feet don't overheat. While many companies make boots with GORE-TEX, not many design with the same craftsmanship that lasts through many seasons of use on the trails.

Some specific attributes of craftsmanship that can be found in the Tatra are the gusseted tongue, toe and ankle rand, and the lacing design. The gusseted tongue prevents trail debris from getting in the boot as you hike through scree and loose dirt. The toe bumper and ankle rand protect the boot from scuffing on rocks thereby lengthening the life of the boot. The lacing system is particularly innovative with what Hanwag calls it's 2-zone system. This design has rotating eyelets that ensure the boots won't loosen up as you log miles. This all around craftsmanship combined with the GORE-TEX membrane and Vibram sole ensures a quality boot for hiking through many seasons and trails.

Most comfortable boots I have ever worn....

I have been wearing hiking boots for years from Pivettas, to Danners, Merrils, Asolos, Columbia, and Vasque. My Tatra GTX boots are the most comfortable boots I have ever worn by far. They are also extremely tough. I don't do as much backpacking as I used to. Now, I go on day hikes cross-country in the Colorado and Wyoming Rockies. Walking cross-country is really hard on boots. They are up to the challenge. My first pair lasted four years (by my calculations that is more than 100 hikes, one every week from mid-April to the end of October and sometimes into November) I have just started using my second pair and I expect to get the same from my new pair. One feature that I really like is the rubber toe cap. I hate getting gouges on the toes of my boots. A small thing but important to me.

This would be a five star boot if it wasn’t for one issue

The boot is a 5 star boot on comfort. They’re so comfortable I hate to take them off. That said I’ve been using ultra thin medical tape to try and stop the noise. The side hooks on the boots tabs rub and squeak. I solved that problem with a bit of tape. The tongue material and the tan leather collar don’t like each other those squeak. I solved that problem with tape. Still when I flex my foot upward the squeal kind of sounds like leaning forward in ski boots.I couldn’t imagine the noise could be that bad from a hiking boot. I feel like I’m becoming a leather scientist trying to knock out the squeak. They’re so perfect in every other way I’d never return them. I’ll keep working the issue. Just seems like this shouldn’t be necessary. To understand it I’d say imagine buying your dream car. It’s so perfect, you get in it’s everything you expected, then you go to hit the brakes and the car squeals like a triaxle dump truck. Still 4 stars most comfortable boots ever.

Excellent boots

These boots are incredibly comfortable and well made. They are supportive for long hikes over rugged terrain. My hope is that they will last several years, unlike boots from other brands that I have purchased. Thanks for carrying these boots. They are hard to find, unlike those other brands that don't seem to hold up--toe guards come off after just a few months on Lowa's, stitching came out on my Keens, soles detached off of Scarpa's, etc.
