Nice shorts, horrible belt

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

The Good
Excellent fit - I have a 30-31" waist with "biker legs" (i.e., somewhat thicker than waist size would indicate) and the size small fits perfectly.

Zip pockets! My big complaint with most shorts is that they dump the contents when you sit, not a problem with these. But, they could use one more pocket; one on the back would be nice for a wallet. I did remove the little dongles that come on the zipper pulls, because I had the lower one snag on some scrub and pull it open a couple times.

Good workmanship - stitching and seam finishing is top-notch.

Good materials - I especially like the fabric that stretches just enough but not too much. It's lightweight enough to be relatively cool in the heat, did my first 20 miler in them in 85-90 degree heat and they felt fine.

The Bad
The belt buckle is atrocious. It has a little internal clip to hold it closed, and really performs that function well. So well that I have to use my knife's screwdriver blade to pry it open, because I simply cannot get enough force on the tiny lip to pull it open with my hands. I haven't looked at it closely enough to see if there are any little nubs on the plastic base that I could cut down to improve this, because...

The belt is too short, too, so you simply can't loosen it all the way and slip the shorts off. It needs at least 2 more inches to allow that, and...

The belt is too narrow. It's thin, 3/4"/19mm nylon and rolls over when you pull it through the buckle, and turns over when your pack belt is riding on it.

(Needless to say, I'm going to swap the belt.)
