GrivelValter Long Bar

No more fumbling in the field.

Changing crampon sizes is a snap with the Grivel Valter Long Bar. Simply turn over the bar, and the retaining tooth automatically reduces size without tools or meticulous adjustment. Just be sure to keep track of right and left and you're good to go.

I am purchasing Grivel Air Tech crampons. Online info indicates that "extender bar" is needed for most boot sizes over 10 US. Is this the correct extender bar for the crampons?

A must for bigger boots

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I'm sure size and type of boot will determine the cutoff, but for 47.5/13.5 Baruntse the 190mm's are a must! (At smallest setting the Nepal Cube GTX 47.5 just fit without switching back).

Is the 160 mm bar longer than the standard G12 bar? Seems like it should be, but I can't find info on the standard bar length, and I want to double check before purchasing.

BIG FEET

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I needed these to make my size 13s fit into the G14. Easy switch and hold up great.

Did you go with the 190mm or 160mm?

190mm. But that was for my old Scarpas. I have since upgraded boots to the Scarpa Mont Blanc and switched back to the original bars. The 190mm worked great for my older bigger boots.

Fixed the boot heel gap.

Replaced the short bars that came with my Grivel G12's. Size 45 boots (11.5 US) too long so the heel was raised about 3/8" above the foot bed. Worked OK but was not right. The Long Bars arrived, took about 2 minutes to replace and now the boot heels seat properly. See photos.

Fixed the boot heel gap.

How does this differ from the long "flex"...

How does this differ from the long "flex" bars?

these can be flipped over, like a quick adjust system, so that it reduces size without tools. You can't do the same for the Grivel Long Flex Bard.

Good for larger feet.

I had these included when I bought my Grivel G14s and I wear a size 41 boot. If your boot size is 42 or less, don't bother with these, just use your short bars. If you do have longer feet, these are perfect for you.

Will these work on the G12s?

    yes.

    Longer is better

I swapped these into my Grivel Air Tech Crampons last night and now they fit my US 11 / UK 10 plastic winter boots. Between normal adjustment holes and the flip&flop-to-act-like-a-shorter-bar feature, I doubt the original bars will ever see the light of day again as these will fit all of my boot options now.
Only 4 stars because the length is maxed-out with the winter boots so I don't know what to tell someone with size 14's... maybe there are longer long bars available elsewhere?
See also the 190mm "Long flex" option as I'm sure they would have the same results with fit.
