Whether you’re riding in hot weather or cold, your body is producing moisture. Efficient moisture management is extremely important in any weather because your body fatigues much more rapidly with even slight variations in core temperature, which fluctuate more based on perspiration. The Gore Bike Wear WS Thermo Base Layer is specifically designed for use in the cooler months to maintain your core temperature through efficient moisture management and windproof protection.
There are really two parts to how the WS Thermo Base Layer helps your body maintain its core temperature while you ride. The first is moisture management. Your body has a much more difficult time regulating its temperature when your skin is wet. The combination of an internal hydrophobic fabric (100% polyester) with an external hydrophilic fabric (100% polyester) pulls moisture away from your body to keep your skin dry and aid in temperature regulation. The second part is protection from the weather. Gore uses WindStopper windproof fabric (100% polyester with a WindStopper membrane) to shield your skin from wind and help your body maintain its core temperature. These two aspects of Windstopper fabric work together to increase your efficiency and performance.
The WS Thermo Base Layer increases comfort in other ways, as well. Mechanical stretch panels (88% polypropylene, 8% elastane, 4% nylon) ensure maximum range of motion and increase durability by stretching instead of tearing. Gore designed the WS Thermo with as few seams as possible, since they cause irritation. Where seams were necessary, Gore used flatlock seams, which cause less chafing than the traditional variety. Finally, Gore designed the WS Thermo with a low cut back to give you full coverage in the seated position.
- Q & A
works as advertised
- Fit: True to size
- Size Bought: XL
Michigan cold is upon us....too dumb to stop riding but no need to with quality cold weather gear. This Gore base layer works to expel moisture from skin while blocking wind. Matched with Gore windstopper outerwear. Several rides with this matchup and all was good.
Great Base Layer for that NYC winter

Great base layer
Needed Large Size
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
- Fit: Runs small
- Size Bought: Large
Though I normally wear medium in most gear, this size was just a little too tight for me. I returned it for a large. On my first ride in the mid 40's where I hit some rain/sleet mix, this base layer with a breathable thermal jersey was a good setup for me. This is a very good addition to my cool/cold weather gear.
Perfect for riding in the winter
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
This is the base layer I had been looking for and I finally found it. I wear it on every winter ride. As long as the temp is above 35 I ride and this keeps me well regulated. The front is windstopper, the back is mesh so when you warm up it vents nicely. At the start of cold rides and on long downhills I stay comfortable. If it warms significantly, I can unzip my outer layers and I get good cooling from the rear mesh so I don't return soaked in sweat.
I'm thinking this could be an excellent base layer for some cold weather rock and/or ice climbing, anyone feel like they'd see any reason why this wouldn't cross over sports well? I'd probably want to snowboard in it too. . .
I'd say yes to snowboarding in it as you'd take advantage of the windproof front layer. The static nature of climbing pretty much negates the usefulness of a windstopper front though.
Windy Exposure tho! dude!
Also, I don't see where it mentions specifics on the windproof layer only covering the front of the shirt. .
Brent, the windproof layer only covers the front of the shirt.
Pretty Awesome Base Layer
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
I used the top today under my long sleeve jersey. I originally went out and the morning was a tad chilly. I didn't feel any wind at all and the base layer was warm and comfortable. I got a few miles into my ride and the day really warmed up. I was worried that I was going to overheat but I didn't overheat surprisingly. It's a great base layer. I'd buy again.
