Head off-road.

You've finally been convinced by your own curiosity and wise instincts to give mountain biking a try. Well done. Whether you're coming from the road side of things or not, having a dirt-specific helmet is helpful, as it'll give you more protection along the back of your head where you're more likely to get whacked by a tree branch or rock. If function ranks highest on your list, check out the Giro Cartelle MIPS Helmet. It meets the same safety standards as higher priced helmets, sacrificing slightly on weight to meet a more friendly price point.

In addition to a solid, lightweight In-Mold shell, the Cartelle also comes with the added protection of MIPS. MIPS, or Multi Directional Impact Protection System, refers to a thin basket added to the helmet's interior, which rotates slightly upon impact to absorb some of the dangerous rotational energy generated in certain crashes. It's not fail-safe, but it's a lot better than helmets of five years ago were. Understanding that trail riding includes a whole lot of climbing, Giro carved 14 vents into the Cartelle, making sure you'll have consistent airflow while you sweat. Spin the dial of the Roc Loc 5 fit system to hone in on the exact fit you want with one hand, and enjoy a plush, breathable ride with Coolmax padding along the helmet's interior.

  • Enjoy tacky trails safely with this budget-friendly helmet
  • Deeper coverage ideal for trail or all-mountain riding
  • Durable shell pairs with energy-absorbing MIPS technology
  • Wealth of vents ensure you stay cool and dry on climbs
  • Visor shields against the sun and works with goggles
  • Padding and one-handed size adjustment for comfortable fit
  • Ages 5 and older

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs large

I have only gone of a few rides with this helmet, but it was in 90 degree weather for 1.5 to 2 hours at a time and I must say this helmet is super comfortable. My head did not sweat at all and I actually forgot I was wearing a helmet. I found the visor adequately blocked out the sun. I did have to repurchase the helmet because I originally ordered the medium, but it was too big and I could not get it to fit correctly. I sized down to a small even though my measurements are a little over 22 inches which is in the medium range according to the chart. I find the small to be very comfortable and fit correctly. As other have mentioned the strap system could be a little better. I did have to tighten it all of the way in order for it to fit, but it worked out fine.

So far so good

I wear this helmet for MTBikng and like it. It feels lite and has decent venting. The visor is nice, but I do wish it came down further. The lowest setting still seems to be a bit high to block out sun, and pushing it up just looks funny. I bought the smaller size and it is snug, but the larger size was too big - something in between would be perfect. Overall it is a good helmet.

Bike helmet

Bery nice helmet. Very comfortable. I use it for mountain biking..

They could sell it for more!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This helmet's comfort, coverage, MIPS feature, and ventilation is more akin to other helmets twice it's price. It does have a little larger profile than some of those top end all mountain wonder helmets though. Bang for the buck the both the Chronicle and Cartelle MIPS helmet are hard to beat .
I got this helmet as a gift for my mom. I've spent some time in the men's version of this helmet, the Chronicle, so it was pretty easy choice for me to get my mother this helmet based on my personal experience with the Chronicle. The multiple points of adjust-ability on the harness made dialing in the fit of the helmet a snap. It looks stylish and my mom loved the red colorway. The purple highlights, straps and buckle offers a nice touch of contrast as well.

Vents and MIPS for the win

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I chose this helmet because it offers MIPS and it had the best fit for my head. I got a size small and it doesn't shift back and forth at all when the straps are adjusted correctly. The inside has plenty of vents and padding so the fit feels snug but not painful.

Haven't used it yet

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I haven't worn a bike helmet since i was 12 and I really love the look of this one. It was actually recommended to me from a friend. My only concern is that it looks reeeeally big on my noggin. Hoping it wont look so big once fall comes around and i can wear it with a hoodie instead of just a tank.

Light, Breathable, Protective

Amazing enduro mountain bike helmet and love the color choices from Giro! This helmet is lightweight and highly vented. The adjustment dial around the interior of the helmet is low-profile and pairs well with most type of sunglasses. Would recommend.

Awesome helmet

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought this for my daughter's 12th birthday. I got her a size medium. It fits her nicely with plenty of room to grow. She got the matte glacier. The color appears like it does on the website, maybe slightly darker. It goes really far down in the back to cover that part of the skull and neck. The straps are easy to adjust. Shipping was fast. Overall, we are both happy with our purchase.

    Colorful Melon Bucket

    Colorful Melon Bucket

I love this helmet -- it's fairly inexpensive considering that it's made with MIPS. The fit is really nice and the colors it comes in are awesome. I chose the Matte Mint and to my surprise it comes with a tie dye strap! I can wear a bun without the helmet pressing down on it too.

The only qualm I have with this is the strap is long and you can only adjust it on one side, which makes the excess really long as well. But you can easily just cut the excess off / burn the ends for a few seconds and voila! Perfect length.

      Great helmet, consider sizing down

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

First of all, love the aesthetics of the helmet from the the colors, to the overall shape and the bill looks good as well as has enough length to actually help with sun protection. A few things to be aware of: 1. I'm typically a true medium, and ended up returning a medium for a small - while I was able to cinch the interior size adjustment down (easily!) to get a snug fit, there was lots of open space between the adjuster and the actual helmet. It was clear it just didn't fit right. Would strongly consider sizing down and size up with Backcountry's excellent return policy if needed. 2. Because the helmet fits close to the ears, I do experience some sunglass soreness. All in all, great value if you can take a stab at getting the right fit!

      This Helmet Works!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I like this helmet. It is a great helmet and a low price point. I crashed pretty bad with this helmet and it protected my head great! I have a smaller head and really like how this helmet fits!

      Slightly Large For Small Heads

      • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I recently got this helmet for my wife, and the only reason I gave this 4 stars is due to the fit not being the best for small heads. Lots of great reviews, but for her and her small noggin, it didn't quite look right or fit well.

      Good so far

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Bought this helmet because it has MIPS and because it is relatively inexpensive. It fits and feels good. I don't know if it actually works because I haven't crashed in it. The only bad thing I've found about this helmet so far is the adjust-ability of the chin strap. It only tightens on one side and not on the other so I can't get it exactly how I like it, but it does adjust enough to be practical.

      Head Protection

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Comfy head protection. No one wants a traumatic brain injury! Protect your noggin!

Bought it for the Lady, Kept It

I bought this helmet for my girlfriend before we set out to Moab as a surprise, assuming a size medium would fit her. When we got to Moab and she finally tried it on, of course it was too large. So, I kept it for myself and now I rock a black and pink helmet! Great fit and solid features for the price.

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I am pretty impressed with how good of quality this helmet is for such a great price! Although it is under $100, it still has MIPS, is fairly lightweight, and has excellent adjustability and other features. I got the hot pink and love the color! The only thing that I was unsure about with this helmet is the sizing of the straps. Maybe I got a dud, but the left chin strap was way to long for the size of the helmet, yet only the right strap was adjustable....so I had to cut and shorten the left strap a bit to get a better fit. As for sizing, I was between sizes, but am glad I sized up. In the small I could fit, but only if the helmet tightening system was all the way open, but in the M it fits pretty good! For reference, my head is about 22 inches in circumference.

        Comfort Safety and Style

        • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: Small

I fell in love with this helmet the first time I tried it on. It weighs next to nothing, has a great fit and coverage, and is at killer price point.
Initially the MIPS made me size up to a medium and I can usually go with either a small or a medium helmet with my head size being about 22". But with this a small all the way. So happy with this helmet! Back on the Giro train and loving it!
