GiordanaFormaRed Carbon Bib Shorts with Cirro Insert - Women's

No excuses here.

You’ll find no excuses in the Giordana FormaRed Carbon Bib Short. It just doesn’t get much better than this. The FormaRed Carbons are at the very top of Giordana’s impressive line of cycling clothing — that should give you a pretty good idea of what kind of quality you’re dealing with. If that isn’t enough, however …

The star of the shorts' construction is the HC-50 compressive Lycra on front and side panels, which replaces the previous model's HC-44 with an increased thread count — from 44 to 50 threads per centimeter squared — and a corresponding uptick in compression. With the added compression, these shorts are approaching medical grade, so they're more than capable of keeping your blood flowing and reducing the fatigue caused by road vibrations and muscle oscillation over long days in the saddle.

The inner thighs and seat panel feature Zaffiro 2.0. It still features the same abrasion-resistant durability as the original Zaffiro, but with an increased resistance to pedaling friction. As brand namesake Giordana herself cheerfully explains of HC-50 and Zaffiro 2.0, "Both are like their predecessors but better!"

The previous model's girdle of Ametista fabric returns unchanged, bringing 200g/m2 of gently supportive compression to your waist and core. It also incorporates carbon filaments, which reinforces the honeycomb-knit Lycra, allowing for a lighter build that retains the strength of a heavier material. The carbon implants impart antimicrobial properties.

The shorts' body is kept in place by the usual bibs up top and the decidedly unusual 190 E leg bands down low. The 190 E bands spread a soft, non-restrictive, and gently compressive grip across the 7.5 centimeter-wide cuffs. A silicone application is used throughout these bands to help keep everything in place. The LoPro 0 used in the front and shoulders of the bibs is the distant, less-restrictive cousin to the LoPro 30 and 45 materials that Giordana uses in the cuffs and armbands of other items. The straps are hem-less for a perfectly flat fit that doesn't show through your jersey. At the shoulder blades, the LoPro is mated to 190 Mesh, which is soft and breathable with a barely-there feel that complements the band of ventilated Antigua material between the shorts' body and bibs.

Inside the FormaRed Carbon Bib Short, you'll find Giordana's top-of-the-line, women's specific Cirro chamois. This seamless, single-piece insert has foam padding of varying thicknesses and densities to ensure comfort while minimizing bulk. It's elastic, so it moves and stretches with you as you ride, and then returns to its original shape when you're done. The outer layer of the pad uses a special Nylon microfiber that incorporates aloe vera for its protective and hygienic properties. This aloe vera treatment is permanent.

Great for my First Century!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Size Bought: XL

Thanks to the other reviews I went ahead and purchased these for my century ride and I'm so glad I did. The fit is tight like a pair of compression shorts which I welcomed. The chamois has great padding. So far no issues with the material. Love the quality.

Great fit, poor quality for the price

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I wanted to love these bibs. The fit is great, the material is really compesive and doesn't stretch out with time, and the wide leg grippers stay put and prevent sausage legs. However, the stitching at the chamois started coming undone almost immediately. I exchanged the first pair of these a month later, hoping that the same thing wouldn't happen to the replacement. In fact, because of the problems with the first pair, I only handwashed the replacement in cold water. But...a month after wearing these bibs, the stitching started to come apart at the chamois, just as with the first pair. 200$ bibs should be able to not fall apart after a month of riding. Expected better quality from Giordana.

Best bibs

This photo shoes the lower gripper part of the bibs. So comfy and highly functional.

    Awesome bibs

The fit is great! They are tight but comfortable. The chamois is good. I love, love the wide mesh leg grippers. It makes the short seem shorter than it is. Since I am shorter the lower front change wasn't a factor for me. I usually order the frc bibs for $100 when on sale so I splurged on these $148 but well worth the $$. These are the best functional and looking bibs I own.

    Best value Giordana Bib

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

This is definitely my favorite Giordana bib that I've worn because of both the price point and the quality of bib you get! The fit is really nice and the aloe vera treated chamois rocks my world. No chaffing on a long ride?? #BLESSED. I especially like how the leg grippers are a really thick band (about 5-6 inches as you can see in the photo) this really helps the shorts to stay put even during efforts out of the saddle and are also nice and also offer nice compression for the thighs. I am 5'11'' and the medium fits very well and the shorts are a good length on my leg which is awesome because I have about a 30-31 inch inseam. The bibs also go up to right up to my belly button

The straps on these guys are nice soft fabric and feel almost silky. My only complaint is that there is no hook closure system on the back or front of the bib straps to make mid ride bathroom stops easier. But I will always complain about that until a company really nails the women's bib design.

Overall: LOVE these. Ill probably buy 6 more pairs. One for everyday of the week. And probably several more for my home girls.

Love them even more than the shorts!

I was scared to try a bib, and now I understand the benefits!! The waist is super comfy and the chamois stays in place even better than with the shorts. The legs are compression, but not too tight and the thigh band also stays in place. I love the bib and the shorts with this material and chamois!

    LOVe the fit

My first big money bibs and absolutely love them, no buyers remorse. The straps are comfortable and feel barely there, I have no trouble with the shorts staying up. I love the style of the leg with the wide band at the leg opening. Where these land on my waist is super comfy; no muffin top!! Can't wait for them to come on sale so I can get another.

    They Ruined a Good Thing

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I have one pair of the 2014 FRC bibs and love them and have been kicking myself for not picking up a second pair before they disappeared. I figured Giordana was bound to come up with a pair at least as good for 2015, but sadly the changes really ruined these for me. The fabrics used are all fantastic, which is to be expected from Giordana. But I was particularly frustrated with 3 main changes. First the leg bands now have silicone dots applied around the inside, which I avoid because it really irritates my skin on long rides. Within minutes of having the shorts on, the bands felt itchy. Secondly the cut is different and now cut to hit at or below your belly button instead of above. I found once I got on the saddle, the seam cut right across my belly button (which is pierced) and was extremely irritating. That might not be such a problem for other ladies, however. And finally, I don't love the new straps. The fabric lays nicely and doesn't cut into your shoulders, but the elastic is so super stretchy that they don't hold the shorts up very well. All in all, I'm disappointed and really wish I could get my hands on a pair for 2014 because I thought they were perfect.

I somewhat agree with this assessment. I've been wearing these bibs for years and there was absolutely nothing I disliked about the previous versions. The new version is not quite as good. The padding is a little thicker, which I dislike, and the band does hit you at a weird belly button spot. That being said, I still have not found one I like better. In fact, I just replaced all 3 of my old ones which had worn out with three of these. I bemoan the loss of my old ones, but other brands still can't compete.
