    Fenix 5X Sapphire

Bringing colorful cartography to your wrist, the Garmin Fenix 5X Sapphire comes with 100K topographic maps of the entire US, so you can explore far-flung areas without ever getting lost. GPS and GLONASS receivers quickly lock onto satellites, meaning you won't have to endlessly wait for reception when you're trekking through the wilderness. For users desiring greater detail, Garmin offers a slew of aftermarket maps for different regions of North America, including their popular 24K topographic maps.

Besides being an incredibly useful tool for wilderness navigation and far-flung adventures, the Fenix 5X Sapphire is upgraded with a sapphire crystal face for greater resistance to unsightly scratches, as well as Wi-Fi connectivity for seamlessly uploading data to your smartphone app. Both colors enjoy the robust durability and refined appeal of a stainless steel case, with the choice between a black silicone band or a stainless steel band. Please note, the stainless steel band comes with an additional silicone QuickFit band for workout-friendly use.

The Fenix 5X Sapphire offers a long-awaited refresh to the popular Fenix 3 with slight upgrades in battery life, alongside a slew of sport and fitness-tracking programs to keep you on track of your exercise needs, outdoor adventures, and training schedule. The Fenix 5X Sapphire is only available with a larger 51-millimeter case made of polished stainless steel, which brings together robust durability and refined style. Another new feature, the Fenix 5X Sapphire features QuickFit band swapping that eliminates the need for pesky tools and screws.

Other than subtle upgrades in battery life and band swapping, the Fenix 5X Sapphire retains many of the features of the Fenix 3, which is a good thing if you're seeking one of the most comprehensive sports and navigation watches on the market. Wrist-based heart rate monitoring delivers fast measurements without messing with a chest strap monitor, unless you absolutely want to, in which case it's compatible with a number of ANT+ chest straps from Garmin.

Advanced Performance Metrics gives you aerobic and anaerobic benefits from grueling workouts, so you can see how it's paying off in the long run and compare yourself to peers of the same age. There's a heap of Advanced Running Dynamics suited to the most dedicated runners monitoring lactate threshold, cadence, and stride length. And to accommodate your multi-sport lifestyle, the Fenix 5X Sapphire comes with profiles specifically tailored to hiking, climbing, cycling, mountain biking, indoor cycling, stand-up paddleboarding, and skiing/snowboarding, among others.

    • Comprehensive sport watch with advanced mapping
    • Preloaded 100K topographic maps for entire US
    • Sapphire crystal face + Wi-Fi connectivity
    • Receives smartphone updates via Bluetooth
    • Chroma Display w/LED backlight for outdoor use
    • Wrist-based heart rate for quick, easy measurement
    • GPS + GLONASS receiver for high-accuracy navigation
    • Multi-sport modes for recreation and indoor training

    Great watch when it works

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

This watch does everything advertised - when it works. The connection between the watch and the phone seems to drop several times a day. You then have to go into the Garmin app on your phone to open it so it will connect to the phone again. Very frustrating.

    Love it! Ultimate Sports Watch

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Insane battery life, incredible data and functionality. Little complicated to setup if you’re not a tech person, worth the effort. Syncs with many other apps like Strava and Nike Run Club (at the same time)

Must say I'm very happy with this one

It has a LOT of features, which means it takes some time getting to learn and know it. Once you do though, it's awesome.

      Love it!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is my second digital watch following an Apple watch. I cracked my apple watch screen within 36 hrs of owning actually. Buying my next digital watch, durability was a huge concern. After owning my Garmin for over a year now I've had no issues. Only a few small blemishes on the stainless steel around the glass you can hardly notice. I live a very active lifestyle and bring my watch everywhere. 100+ days snowboarding, mtn biking, running, etc. It holds up in all activities. The battery life is incredible even after more than a year of use. Also, if you are into analytics this thing gathers everything. This watch will help you see your weak spots and push PRs. It did for me!

      Track it all!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This watch is a great buy for those looking to track their outdoor activities, including running, rowing, biking, swimming, skiing. The GPS is superbly accurate (for the most part) and tracks detailed information while you're on the move, and the heart monitor gives you quick access to your HR information, during activity and post trip, weekly and monthly stats. All these features contribute to better tracking and training for Athletes and Novices alike. I've used mine extensively throughout the US and in Europe while running, trekking, biking, skiing, and the information has been incredibly useful for training. While the tracking features are battery intensive, you can still get a few days charge while actively tracking GPS in the back country, and up to two weeks or so of watch use when not using GPS or other battery intensive features. Not to mention that the watch has proven to be tough as hell, withstanding all the boating, climbing and bike crashes you can throw at it. All in all a great buy for someone looking for a watch with some serious capabilities.

      Great watch

Awesome watch! I have a smaller wrist and it still is not overbearing. It definitely weighs a bit more than an Apple watch but it’s much more durable and activity specific. Not to mention, the satellites provide very accurate tracking (GLONASS). I only wish I could customize which notifications I receive since I paired it with my smartphone- I only want certain apps to be able to notify me, not just an all or none option. I find myself looking at my heart rate daily now that I don’t have to use a chest strap. It’s super easy to sync to the Garmin app to upload activities- and easy to link a Strava account (since that’s important now days…) I had the Fenix 2 for 3 years and it withstood so many activities that it wasn’t a hard choice when it came to upgrading to the Fenix 5. Take some time and read the manual to get the most out of this awesome watch.

        Great Watch! a little big

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This watch works great! Battery life is superb, GPS and topos are easy to use and accurate. Really like being able to track all of my activities in one place

        Major Win

        • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I bought this as a gift for my trail running fiance. He was so pumped to receive it. He loves the heart rate monitor feature and the gps tracking feature most. He is able to use this as his solo multisport watch and can sync all data. I would HIGHLY recommend this watch to anyone looking for one watch to do it all.

        Best sport watch

        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: Fenix 5X

After using it for 3 month, I can say its the best sport watch someone can buy. All the information it gathers from sleeping, running and cycling for my activities shows me a complete overview of what I need to do to improve my fitness and what I'm doing wrong.

Everything you could want and more!

This thing does it all. I have been using the watch for about 4 months now and love it. Switching from the Fenix 3 (also an amazing watch) the biggest upgrades is the screen resolution and mapping function. I love tracking my fitness in multiple sports with one device without having to wear a chest strap. I love the option to personalize what information I want to see for each sport. I have mostly used this for biking, skiing and hunting. The mapping function is amazing. I was able to mark my truck and camp on the map and navigate back through thick unfamiliar forest with ease. I love this thing.

I am trying out Suunto Spartan baro any experience?

Better for day trips than for BC

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Really cool functions, and incredibly fun. That said it's more of a toy than a tool. I spend multiple days in the backcountry at a time and the battery life on this still sucks (though not as bad as Fenix 3). If you need this for little 2 day trips, you won't be let down. For the rest of us, it becomes dead weight by the end of the trip. I had to return mine and get a Citizen Altichron. No bs, just time, compass, and altimeter plus it's solar. When Fenix fixes the battery issue and stops misleading us with the "smart mode" and false batter times, they will no doubt own the game. Until then, smartwatches don't belong in the backcountry.

Sorry this didn't work for your longer backcountry trips, Jason! This thing can definitely be used as a tool ( depending on what your expectations and hobbies are) but I 100% understand your need to return it in exchange for something that you can use for all of your passions. - including long trips without access to a charger.

In the end, glad you found what you needed but sorry to hear this one let you down!

        Worth the $$$

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I ended up breaking my old Suunto after a nasty spill on the trail and tried to use different devices (including Apple Watch 2) for about a year until I decided to fork up the money for this. I've used this trail running, mountain biking, swimming, kayaking, hiking, and on my SUP. It has been awesome!

For starters this things is a beast. I've already beat it up on the trail and knocked it against rocks while bouldering. When running it's comfortable and doesn't distract. It did take a little while to get used to how it would try to keep you on course if running a preloaded path but once you get familiar with the vibrations it's pretty awesome.

One of my favorite features has been the recovery time calculator. Since it's always learning it adapts to how stressful your workouts are then recommends new times after the end of each workout. Obviously it's more of a suggestion not a rule, but I've noticed my endurance greatly increases when I listen to the watch's suggested recovery times.

Finally this thing has become my everyday watch. It's small enough to not be obnoxious on my wrist which is nice at work. Garmin's app is what really helps set this watch apart from others. The user interface and way of consuming your metrics is much better than others. If you're looking for a watch that can do everything this is it.

Totally agree that the best way to describe this watch is as a BEAST!!! The recovery calculator is one of my favorites as well - it really helps ensure you're getting the most out of every work out without pushing your body too far.
So glad to hear you're loving it so far, Sean!

Awesome Upgrade to a great watch

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I upgraded to the Fenix 5x from the Fenix 3 HR. I've been using the watch quite a bit, both for training as well as backpacking. The new topographic maps feature is quite nice and I'm really enjoying the route building feature for running... when it can find a route more interesting than just out and back.

My biggest concern was the changes in battery performance, but to be honest I haven't really noticed much of a difference. During normal day to day wear I'm going a week or more without charging the watch. During backpacking trips, that I'm using the GPS for a good part of the day, I might need to charge the watch every other day or so.

The size is the only downside that I have at the moment... It's not a small watch.

I would definitely recommend this watch to anyone that's looking for a bomber GPS tracking/navigation watch with tons of training features an great performance feedback.

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This watch is awesome!! Does everything, feels really good wearing it and looks really good on!
