Doesn't protect Hip Bone
I love the idea of these and they are comfortable. Be aware, however, that these do NOT cover what is generically referred to has the hip bone. If you look at the attached photo, I am touching my hip bone and as you can see there isn't any padding there. To get the pads to cover this area of your hipbone, you would need to pull the waistband up to your nipples, granny style. I tried it. Trust me, you don't want to wear them that way.
Instead, the padding is designed to cover/protect the ball and socket joint where the femur attaches to the pubic bone. If this is the area you are looking to protect, go ahead and buy these.
As a side note, I was recently speaking with a radiologist in Fruita, CO. He informed me that he sees all types of fractures from mountain biking. He stated that while broken arms and legs and collarbones are no fun, they typically heal fine and in the end you're basically good as new. However, he stated that a broken pelvis is MUCH more serious, and it is that type of injury that I was hoping to protect. While these shorts may be better than nothing, it doesn't seem like they would protect against a broken pelvis if I was to fall and hit my hip bone against a rock.
Excellent product - however, I had to return as the size chart on the website does not reflect the actual size range listed on the product. It may be that G-Form changed their specifications in the latest release - but the chart listed on BC should be updated. That said - excellent product!
Runs very small
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
- Fit: Runs small
- Size Bought: Men's Small
These shorts were so small (especially around the thighs) that I wonder if they got the women's ones mixed up with the men's! The shorts I got matched the picture of the women's shorts in regards to the waistband and the markings on the legs. Everything matched the women's picture except for the gray chamois and the sizing seemed much more on part with women's sizing (I'm a female but typically like the fit of men's clothing). Other than the size, the shorts seemed ok as far as fit and the liner, while not like your typical padded chamois in regards to the thickness, felt ok on the 1 hour ride that I did in these shorts. Luckily I didn't get to test out the G-form pads, but the shorts were much less restrictive than my other Fox padded shorts. I will be returning the shorts though because they are too tight for my liking.
