Five Ten Guide Tennie Mid Approach Shoe - Men's

For the long haul.

More than 30 years in production, the Five Ten Men's Guide Tennie Mid Approach Shoe hits the new season with extra support. Five Ten crafted its upper out of durable leather with the traditional stitching that the Guide is know for. The shoe's sole features the same Stealth C4 rubber that climbers use to smear their ways up to the tops of slippery slabs, so you know you can trust it on the approach to said slab. The compression-molded EVA midsole ensures that long-lasting cush that hikers look for.

Great shoe until they fall apart

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Its tough to give these a rating. They are great approach shoes until they fall apart. They work quite well for scrambling, approaches and climbing. My first pair made it probably 5 months before I had to glue the soles back onto both shoes. That held them for another 6 months or so at least, but I don't think I should be having to glue the sole back onto a $160 pair of shoes. What finally did these in was a large crack showing up between the sole and the rand on the side of the shoe.

Bought a new pair, and the same split happened withing 3 months. If this happened only once I would think mayyybe I caught it on something ungodly sharp somehow. But it has happened twice, in almost the same spot. Backcountry is exchanging them for a new pair, which is great. But it seems like 5.10 could figure out a way to make the soles a little more durable for the cost of these shoes. After this replacement pair comes it will probably be my last pair of 5.10's unless they new pair bucks the trend and doesn't start falling apart withing a few months of moderate wear.

Good shoe

I've had these for about two years and they are the most comfortable shoe I have. The leather stretched a decent amount and really formed to my foot. It was only after about a year and a half that the sole started to come off, which didnt bother me too much because I had hundreds of days of use out of them, and I also just put them back together with shoe goo which is still holding up.

They work well for easy climbs (I haven't tried to do anything more than a 5.8 in them), but they really shine for scrambling and day hikes. I also used these for a couple hundred miles of single track in Moab, surprisingly they work very well for biking.

I like to think of these as the closest thing to a go anywhere do anything type shoe. Just remember you'll have to mend the sole...

Great Shoe! Sole detached for me also

Really comfortable. Awesome grip for approaches up LCC. Only negative is that the sole started to separate from the shoe after 4 months of 1-2 times a week climbing. On the positive side backcountry was super helpful with an exchange and worked through all my issues. Hope this new pair lasts cause they are a great shoe!

Ordering, shipping, and comfort are all good. Now I bought these Jan. 22 2015 and already the sole has begun to detach itself from the rest of the shoe along with some of the other rubber. I have not worn them everyday and expected, for around $140.00 these would last at least 3 months, not one month. After closer inspection I also discovered they were from China. My mistake. I bought these because a friend recommended them. I will not buy these or this brand again. On another note thank you to Back Country for your good service.

Bummer Jared, 5.10 has an excellent group of staff that will make things right for their customers. I've blown the rubber off my Tennies from the tough approaches around YNP. Five Ten sent me a replacement pair ASAP. The Guide Tennies are rad! Sorry yours aren't working out for ya

You must have got the runt of the litter. I've killed these shoes in Yosemite and Zion. I've done 30 some canyons, several killer adventures, and 5.11 climbing in these shoes. I've very much enjoyed my pair. They're ugly as sin now, but they've inspired 5 other friends to try the guides and well all adore them. Sorry for the rotten luck Jared...
