Fi'zi:k R4B Uomo Boa Cycling Shoe
If you're looking to invest in a road shoe that will see you through seasons of training while weathering fickle trends, pause your search and take a look at the Fizik R4B Uomo Boa Shoes. Known for its clean lines and too-cool minimal saddle silhouettes, Fizik brings the same classic style to its entire line of shoes. More accessible to the self-sponsored cyclist than the R1B or R3B, the R4B Uomo echoes the same sleek design and effective construction as its pricier siblings, with a carbon composite sole and ample range to fine-tune fit.
Fizik actually uses Microtex uppers across its entire line, so your toes will be wiggling around underneath the same perforated synthetic leather uppers as the pros wearing the R1B. Flexible and light, the material is stronger than it looks. Trust it to weather road grit and unexpected showers with grace as you use the BOA dial and two hook-and-loop straps to secure it around the contours of your foot for a slip-free fit. Underneath the shoe, a carbon-injected synthetic outsole blends some of the rigidity of carbon with the durability of nylon for reliable power transfer. Within the shoe, Fizik includes its Cycling Insole, molded to provide support to your hardworking foot as you turn the pedals alongside the expertly shaped heel cup.

First pair of cycling shoes!
- Fit: True to size
- Size Bought: 37.5
I bought these shoes for 3 reasons. 1. Fizik has the best looking shoes on the market that I've seen 2. recommendation from my spin class 3. best reviews on all models.
I started a spin cycling class about 2 months ago, i was renting shoes ( i know.....) for a few classes and started to look into buying my first pair of cycling shoes. Saw these R4's and fell in love! They fit great and the Boa dial is rad, I love that you can really dial this shoe in! i put look delta cleats on them. They are working great and easy to clip in and out in class! highly recommended!!!
Really great first impressions
- Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
- Fit: True to size
I got these for my brother as a birthday gift, and he's absolutely loved them. For the price, we were both shocked at the quality of the materials, and the glove-like fit. After riding them for a week he observed that they were 90% as stiff as the full carbon-soled shoes he had ridden before. If you're looking for a high-performance shoe that won't break the bank, these bad boys are the way to go!
What a shoe!
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
- Fit: Runs large
- Size Bought: 44.5
Coming from R5B, these are more stiff, they do seem to run larger then the R5B, I use a 45 in the R5 and a 44.5 in the R4B. I really have no complaints except these are made in China, unlike every other Fizik item I have, that are made in Italy, just never saw them doing something like this, but they appear to be very well made and look fantastic! Super comfy!!
(Just got a pair). Has anyone experienced issues with Shimano SH11 cleats not engaging with SPD-SL (ultegra) pedals with these shoes ?
For the life of me, I cannot clip in. This is when trying new and old cleats (from old Specialized shoes), with different levels of spring tension. Are the Fizik outsoles shaped slightly differently from all other shoes ? Never experienced this in any other previous shoe (shimano / specialized)
I had a pair for several weeks now and experienced similar frustration as you did. I had tried several old and new yellow cleats, comparing with my Shimano shoes. My final conclusion: Fizik is at fault with excessive curvature.
How does the sizing compare for those switching from Specialized BG road shoes (comp/expert) ? Is it like for like ?
(answering own question) - Go for EURO sizing match. Specialized 11.5US matches Fizik 11US.
Not for everyone!
- Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
- Fit: Runs small
- Size Bought: 44
I have a pair of the original R3 Uomo (sail cloth closures/mesh uppers), which I absolutely love. These were the first shoes that my feet felt truly comfortable in . I've owned all the top brands throughout my 25+ yrs of riding & racing (SIDI, Shimano, SWorks...you name it). These new Fizik are quite different though!
1. They are much narrower in the toe box, strangely size 44 was noticeably smaller than my R3 Uomo, 44.5 was a closer fit with 45 being a hair too long.
2. Not nearly as stiff ,and I realize that they are not a full carbon sole, like the R3 Uomo, but I could feel them flex under my weight on a carpeted floor.
3. Also the cleat holes are placed in a rather curious position, making it impossible to position the pedal spindle just slightly behind the largest metatarsal ball. I've never had an issue with accomplishing this on any other shoe.
I must point out that the floating cleat plate has now been replaced by a statically positioned one, which in all likelihood contributed to the above anomaly.
As we all know shoes and saddles are subjective to each rider's physical characteristics, and what did not work for me may be ideal for smaller sized riders. After all these shoes are impeccably made and fit beautifully over the foot...just not my cup of tea!
What is the "injected carbon composite" outsole? Is there a stiffness index to compare with the carbon R3B?
Comfortable yet stiff enough shoe
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
- Fit: True to size
Most comfortable of the Fizik line that I tried (R1 & R3) The R4 has a wider toe box it seems and the asymmetric upper reduces pressure on the top of my foot. Wore specialized for years but am now firmly a Fizik fan.
