Khion Carbon Boot

Say you want a new ski boot that climbs like a mountain goat and descends like Eric Hjorleifson. What do you do? Well, how about giving Hoji the run of your factory and near-total control over the design process? That's just about what Dyanfit did when designing the brand new Khion Carbon boot, which sets the standard for newfangled freeride touring boots that hike like old-school tourers. Admittedly, it's a category that's been around for about 12 minutes, but the Khion is setting itself apart with 90 degrees of cuff rotation, a progressive 130 flex, and bombproof Precision Lock cuff mechanism that gives the Khion the rock-solid feel of a traditional alpine boot at close to half the weight.

Hoji's embraced the earn-your-turns ethic, but he's still a freeskier at heart, so the Khion has to rip. Setting it apart from other boots, the Precision Lock System employs a relatively traditional locking ski/hike switch along the stiff magnesium spoiler, but it also incorporates small "bumpers" along the cuff/shell interface and inside the overlap, which eliminate cuff slop and actually lock the cuff down harder as you drive the boot harder. This gives the Khion a burly but progressive flex unmatched by other touring boots but doesn't limit the easy-striding cuff rotation. Dynafit and Hoji also engineered a carbon-fiber exoskeleton to keep the boot laterally stiff, an innovation that also allowed it to use softer materials in non-key zones for improved hiking and skinning comfort.

Inside of the pebax shell and carbon fiber cuff, a heat-moldable Custom Ready liner snugs up tightly around your foot via a Boa dial closure, so you can have a snug liner fit without having to buckle the shell down tightly. The liner tongue features a stiff rib down the middle for increased power, and Hoji designed the One-Touch buckles to lock down in a single motion and stay open via magnetic catches that stop them from flapping around when you haven't locked them down. The buckles, in accordance with the Khion's design, have also been engineered to be snow-dynamic, which translates to less resistance and grabbing in deeper snow. The Formula Pomoca sole provides rugged grip on ice and rock, and Dynafit's classic Quick Step-In tech inserts make popping your skis on a cinch, even when the snow's deeper than seems reasonable.
