A well-designed pack for single-day adventures.

The Deuter Women's ACT Trail 28 SL Backpack will carry everything you need for big hikes where the goal is summit or bust. This well-conceived pack features Deuter's SL Women's fit, which takes into account the smaller frame of female hikers. A reduced torso length, narrow shoulder straps, and a conical shape all result in a better fit for women who feel that standard backpacks are too large. The contoured shoulder straps have a breathable air mesh lining, while the back panel allows air to actively pass between your back and the pack for a cool and comfortable fit. The main compartment can be accessed either from the top or from the front panel. A wet gear compartment keeps your rain jacket separate from other layers after those frequent and pesky afternoon rain showers, while multiple gear loops let you carry an ice axe or trekking poles when you need to.

  • SL Women's fit

  • Fold-away mesh hip wings

Love this pack!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've had this pack for about 2 years now, and it's so so so great! I've used it for long day hikes in tricky weather (the rain cover is so handy) and car-camping trips. I've also used it for a carry-on personal item on flights and as a weekender bag over the summer (not as much bulky clothes, still very roomy) - there's a nice sleeve (described here as a wet gear compartment) that I often use to fit my laptop in or for a 2.5L bladder (it can definitely fit larger). Also - so many complements from friends, who especially love the rain cover!

The pack sits nicely on my back/hips (I'm 5'7" and 130lbs), with great cushioning built in. I have a smaller Osprey pack that I use on smaller trips from home, but find that this Deuter is generally the perfect size and my go-to when I'm traveling for a trip! Pict is from summer hiking in the Tetons.

Love this pack!

Deuter makes my favorite packs

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I own 3 Deuter backpacks. Each one is incredibly comfortable, has bomb proof construction, and has every feature I need. Nothing more, nothing less.
I had to dock off one start for the fit of the womens bag. The max torso length is 19". I am 6'1", 155lbs and needed at least a 20" torso length for the hip straps to be effective. The shoulder straps for the womens bag were also slightly small and just felt strange. I had to return this and ended up buying the mens ACT 30L which has a perfect fit!
I love that you can leave the bag fairly empty without feeling (or looking) like it is overkill for your leisurely hike. Its also great that you can STUFF this thing full of gear and carry it comfortably for hours on end. Want to go climb with it? Sure! Easy to stuff a trad rack and rope in along with shoes. You can haul it up a rock and not worry about it falling apart. I love that you can stow the hip straps for use while wearing a harness.
The zipper on top of the bag is easy to reach and operate without removing the pack. Having a zipper that allows you to access the bottom of the bag without taking everything out is incredibly helpful.
I know I will have this pack for many years and I am looking forward to using it this winter while ski touring and snowshoeing.

Comfortably carrying 3L of water, a down jacket, gortex shell, lunch for 2 people, and a first aid kit.

Unanswered Question

I need a hydration bladder for this backpack and I would a recommendation. Also, I lost my rain cover and need to know what size to get. Thanks, Sue N.

Awesome Pack

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I brought this pack with me on an alpine mountaineering trip to the White Mountains in New Hampshire. In the subzero temperatures with extremely high winds, searching for things in my bag was not an option. This pack had absolutely perfect accessibility and minimized the time that I needed to grab gear/food. The side pocket into the main part of the bag is awesome, and with good planning you can have everything at your fingertips. It effectively carried hiking poles and an ice axe. It is extremely comfortable, and I would highly recommend to anyone who is looking to buy a backpack that can fulfill multiple needs. Also, I didn't need it on this trip, but the incorporated rain cover is great!

Awesome Pack

Best one I've ever used for backpacking!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Great for a weekend or for a few weeks for MINIMALISTS BACKPACKERS, can even go for a few months if properly planned/packed. Sturdy bag with easy access top closure so you can reach items without having to take everything out, has enough pockets and compartments. I am 5'1 110 lbs, used for backpacking through the Philippines for 3 weeks and few weekend trips in the USA. Replaced that annoying carry on luggage and fits in overhead compartment every time!! Great if you plan on walking lot because it doesn't carry too much weight. Also great back support and fits waist perfectly! Can even carry my manduka eko superlite yoga mat on the side! SUPERB!

Good pack

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This pack is very compac. It would be perfect if belt zip pouch is available.

Fits like a silk glove.

There are a number of things I love about this pack. For one, it fit my waist, very well. I was able to cinch it really tight, and it was still very comfortable. I loved how well the mesh belt breathed and kept me from getting too sweaty. You sacrifice not having pockets there, for easy access, but it's worth it to me, especially in hot weather. Reaching up over my head, to the top pocket, for my camera, was not a big deal, at all.

Here are some more features that are great about this pack:

1) Easy Access to Everything. It has zippers all

over the place, so you can get to the items at the bottom of your pack, without having to take anything else out.

2) Adjustable bosom straps. You can slide

the chest strap up and down, so can place the strap where ever you want.

3) Rain Cover.

Of course a rain cover is a plus!

4) Hydration compatible.

It has on interior mesh pocket for a large bladder, and one exterior pocket for a large water bottle.

5) Stays put.

My adventures always take me to rock that I need to climb up. This stays right in line with my body, and doesn't swing, lean or fall forward, throwing me off balance. The water bottle never slips, either.

6)Active Shoulder Straps.

When I moved my shoulders, either by walking or scampering up rock, the pack will stretch ever so slightly, with you. So, you don't feel like there is the weight, resisting you and pulling you back. That will also help you keep in a more natural and healthy posture.

7) Easy to use and secure trekking pole holders.

I put my GoPro Selfie stick on there, since I didn't have trekking poles, and it was very secure.

8) Roomy.

I took a fleece hoodie, rain jacket, sunscreen, lunch, 3L hydration bladder, water bottle, portable speaker (which is pretty big, 7x 3.75 x 2.5 in) and I still had plenty of room for more. I didn't even pack my jackets nicely. I just stuffed them in.

I love this pack

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

For full day hikes in challenging terrain, I prefer my Osprey Kestrel 32. However this pack has a very specific purpose:
When I work at summer camp and must carry my pack all day with various bits of supplies and gear, which include a 2 liter Platypus big zip bladder, a 10 oz metal water bottle, (to add electrolyte tablets if need be), a down sweater, rain jacket, rain pants, hat, Buff, snacks, electronics (iPad and iPhone), various manuals, gloves, chapstick, sunblock and a first aid kit, this pack has no equal.
I'm usually in areas where the weather is very temperamental, so the rain cover is handy.
The pack holds a lot more gear than it looks, its dual accessibility is the bomb and its very tough and sturdy.
I've put it through hell a million times and it still looks new.

great day pack!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

i've got this pack in blue, and love it to death. i'm a hiking guide by trade, so have had my fair share of day packs. this one is the perfect size for me: holds my first aid kit, extra warm layers, food, water bottle, hydration pack, and camera. if i need to hold some of my clients gear, i'm able to do so as well.

i like the long side pocket that zips close - i never really need two water bottle pockets, and would rather have some extra organizational features like this.

my absolute favorite thing about this pack is the fit and how well it distributes weight. heavy packs often strain my neck and shoulders, but this one does not.

great day pack!
