Whirlibird IV Interchange Hooded 3-in-1 Jacket

You can take the Columbia Whirlibird IV Interchange Hooded 3-in-1 Jacket out on chilly shoulder season hikes as well as winter ski sessions. Zip out the insulated liner when you only need this jacket's Omni-Tech waterproof protection for rainy warm-weather strolls, and zip the liner back in when winter rolls around and you hit the slopes for a day of skiing with friends. The inner jacket's Omni-Tech thermal reflective lining uses silver dots to reflect your body heat back to you, adding an extra dose of defense between you and the frozen mountains. It's also water-resistant to shed light rain if you take the inner jacket on autumn camping trips. The active fit makes sure you can move freely in the Whirlibird, and a drop-tail hem enhances your coverage from the wet world.

  • A year-round 3-in-1 jacket with mountain-friendly features
  • Omni-Tech shell provides waterproof protection in the deep snow
  • Removable liner with Omni-Heat is insulated for extra warmth
  • Underarm vents dump excess heat on steep hikes for comfort
  • Powder skirt gives protection from powder days on the slopes
  • Goggle pocket, ski pass pocket on shell for use at the resorts
  • Active fit allows freedom of movement during multiple activities
  • Drop tail offers extra coverage for protection from the elements

Ruby Red is NOT Red

  • Fit: True to size

Jacket was nice, fit well but had to return it because Ruby red is really a pink

Solid Jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: Medium

I love this Jacket! With both the lining and the outer shell, I never get cold on a wintery day. Plus the lining is perfect for a cool day. It does fit a little bit big, but then again, there were no smalls available when I purchased the jacket.

Versatile and Toasty!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

I ordered the Whirlibird Jacket (in red hibiscus plaid) and I love it! I haven't worn it on the slopes yet or in extreme cold conditions, but I can already tell it's a super warm jacket. I love that it has a zippable insert that's cozy and fashionable, so you can wear it alone or keep it in the jacket. The entire jacket is also very stylish and I'm obsessed with the color and pattern! I'm excited to snowboard in it and see how it does this winter.

Great Ski Jacket

  • Fit: True to size

Wore this right out of the box in Breckenridge. Wind chill below zero two days and never got cold! Lots of pockets for storage. Great jacket, great deal.

Good but Flawed

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

Warm jacket with a good fit. Loved the color, I was easy to find on the mountain. My main complaints are:
1) The Sleeves - don't secure well. The liner isn't very attached to the shell so it can be awkward when taking off the jacket. You need to pull from the sleeves.
2) The Zipper - is hard to zip/unzip, especially with gloves on. It's coated probably to be water proof but it can be challenging to line up.
3) The Powder Skirt - doesn't work when also using the liner.

Another review said they had a problem getting the hood over a helmet but I didn't have an issue.

Warm but some flaws

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: S

I got this jacket in purple for a ski trip. I do not get to ski often so I did not want to spend a lot of money on a jacket. This jacket was very warm even with minimal layers on underneath while skiing in 10-20F degree temps! The purple color was pretty too. I ended up unzipping the tow layers so that the bottom layer would retain my body heat a little better. It kept me dry when it started snowing as well. My complaints are mainly: 1) the hood will not go over a ski helmet and the collar does not come up very high to cover your face, which sucks when it's snowing hard and you are skiing; 2) the main zipper was a little difficult to zip/unzip; 3) a bit boxy fit through the mid-section could be more flattering; 4) could use more pockets; and 5) the pitzips/vents only vent the shell and not the underneath layer. Overall, it served my purpose but it could be improved.

Almost a five star pick

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I absolutely love this jacket. The insulated liner is lightweight and plenty warm on it's own. Though when zipped together there is no possible way you can use the powder skirt that is attached to the outer shell.

Water Resistant . Breathable. Definitely a great pick for frigid temperatures, and playing in some powder.

Bad choice

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small

As a regular skier who does about 25 to 35 days a year I am always searching for a jacket that will keep me warm without the bulk. I really feel the cold and thought I had stumbled upon a winner with this jacket. We'll I was wrong. I took it to whistler from Australia and found that on any wet day I would get drenched in an hour......yes that's correct. The re is no seam at the collar to join the liner to the jacket and as I have a helmet on the collar just let water soak in and my back would be drenched. I took the jacket to the Columbia shop in whistler where I was sorry but nothing we can do. I was told to take it back to the shop I bought it from in Australia. We'll I was not happy with this response or customer service. I purchased a new Helly Hansen jacket to complete my 3 week trip at whistler.

Very very disappointed.

Perfect coat!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

This is a great coat! It's so warm, when my friends and I are out in the snow, they're complaining about being chilly and I'm super cozy. It is completely waterproof and the liner is sleek and wearable for daily use. Great purchase and great value.

Warmest Coat I've Ever Owned

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I got this coat because I wanted to try the thermal feature created by Columbia. I must say I will never wear another type of coat. It is so warm. Being a person that is always cold and in the past having issues with shivering because none of my body heat was staying in I wanted a furnace! I found it! The moment I put this coat on I feel the reflective beads heating me up with my own body heat. In the early fall I am comfortable just leaving the jacket open but it's a lifesaver in the winter!

The fit is perfect for me. I usually wear a small but I got a medium just because I do like to wear hoodies and other layers under my coat. It gets a bit snug if I have a heavy long sleeve on with a hoodie than the coat.

I like the thumbhole cuffs that keep my wrists warm and keep the coat from riding up.

Also, this coat is extremely waterproof. I was in a rain storm and my pants were soaked by my core was dry and the water just beaded off the coat.

Wonderful selection for me! Thanks BackCountry for your GREAT prices and thank you Columbia for your awesome technology.

Love OmniHeat

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

Last year I purchased OmniHeat ski pants. I tend to always be cold and OmniHeat worked for my legs but I still had a ton of layers up top. This year I decided to purchase an OmniHeat jacket to cut down on the layers. Although I have not taken it out skiing yet, I have used the OmniHeat inner jacket no -stop

Since receiving it. It works great. The color of the outer shell is gorgeous and will help others locate me on the mountain easily. Now I just need some snow!
