Why We Like The Saturday Trail II Convertible Pant

The key to a successful season of hiking is learning how to adapt to changing conditions, and the Saturday Trail II Convertible Pants are basically, a utility knife for your legs. With zip-off pant legs they effortlessly transition between pants and shorts, and we love how the pants are constructed with integrated water repellent and sun-resistant technology for weather protection. Like all of Columbia’s gear, this pair of pants is designed to make it easier to get outside and explore nature’s offerings with peace of mind.

    • Convertible hiking pants are ideal from summer to shoulder-season
    • Nylon and elastane fabric is abrasion-resistant for heavy usage
    • DWR fabric treatment repels water from morning dew or light rain
    • UPF 50 sun protection keeps you covered on exposed ridges
    • Articulated knees and gusseted crotch offer enhanced mobility
    • Zip-off legs are easy to remove and apply as the weather changes

    Fix the leg zippers

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 8

I was so disappointed that I had to return these pants. I liked the color and the fabric, but the zippers on the convertible leg were uncomfortably tight. The pants stretched but the zippers had to give at all.

    Faulty Leg Zipper Construction

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 4 Long

I generally wear a size 0-2 in most clothes and got a 4 in these after reading reviews. They fit perfectly...until I sit down. I’m pretty thin and yet there’s no give to the zippers around your thighs. They’re uncomfortably tight and will leave marks around your legs. But if you’re standing up hiking the whole time you’re wearing them, they’re great. The long length is also perfectly sufficient to wear with hiking boots and not have them look like high waters since I’m a bit taller than average.

    Love these

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 4 regular

Second pair of these pants. I wasn’t sold on the zip offs style, but you don’t notice the zipper and they’re convenient when there are quick temperature changes. The material is super light and stretchy so they’re perfect if you like scrambling. They’re pretty flattering, too. I would size up if you’re in between sizes, but don’t go up a size if not. Columbia is definitely underrated for the quality of their clothing!

    Love these

    Worked just fine

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 6

I like the versatility of these. I am 5'5", 115-120 lbs. and a size 6 fits pretty well--a little loose in the waist but a belt fixes that. I do not have an issue with the zippers cutting into my legs. I wore them on a three-hour flight, and packing up my tent and breaking camp--so lots of sitting, bending, squatting, etc. I noticed the zippers occasionally but no discomfort. I like that these pants are pretty quick-dry and dirt brushes off them very easily. They also take up very little room in my bag. My observation is reviewers either love these or hate these.

Zippers really do cut into your legs

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 10

Loved the way they looked, but the zippers were painful. I read the other reviews and thought I would be ok, I'm not terribly large around the upper knee. Nope. The reports are TRUE. VERY tight zippers, even when standing straight legged. If you squat down, the cut into my legs was extreme! Do not buy these until someone in design adds at least half an inch to the zippers !!

    Nice feel, kinda snug

    • Size Bought: 4

Pants feel super soft but they are slightly snug in the waist and they are tight around the thigh. If the zip off was a little longer to where they wouldn't squeeze my thighs when I sit and if my thighs happen to get larger these will not fit.

Love the feel of them,, But...

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 2 Long

I love the feel of the fabric and I think they are awesome, The zipper is tight on my upper leg, That is my only complaint.

    Ok, but not great!

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

There was hardly any stretch, so it wasn't as versatile as I would have like. Zipper was above the knee, which I'm not a huge fan of. Still functional, but not my go-to convertible pant.

    Great on the 2nd Try

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 8 long

I initially ordered these in a size 10 regular. - I wear a 6 or 8 typically. They ended up being too big, stretched a little after wearing for a day of hiking and the seam came undone at the hem. Luckily, backcountry has amazing customer service and I was able to exchange them for a size 8 long. These fit perfect! I haven't gotten to try them on the trail, yet, but am giving Columbia the benefit of doubt that the other pair were just a bad item.

    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 2L

Columbia is typically my go-to when looking for outdoor clothing. They produce quality clothes and are reasonably priced when compared with other brands on the market. Additionally, they are one of the few that I've come across that make pants in Long sizes. I read the reviews before purchasing these and decided to give them a shot in spite of the negative reviews. The reviews are right in the sense that the zippers are too tight and because of that are not the most comfortable when sitting down. However, I did not find this to be a deal breaker (I have pretty slim legs so it worked well for me). I wore them around the house all evening and took the dogs for a walk and was overall pretty comfortable in them. Other than the zippers being too tight, they are awesome! The fabric is soft and breathable, and the length was spot on. I would recommend sizing up in these. I usually wear a 0 or a 2, and I wish I would have gotten a 4 instead of a 2. Not a huge deal, they still fit well but I would rather them be looser (this might help with the zipper issue as well). I would recommend these to people with very slim legs/thighs. If you're more on the muscular side it might be worth looking a different pair of pants.

    Terrible pants

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 6 Long

The zippers cut into my thighs so badly that even when standing it was uncomfortable. I can't kneel or crouch in them. I'm a field biologist and so I rely on good pants. These are a joke. I am so frustrated by them. (For reference: I wear a size 6 in the North Face, prAna, Mountain Hardware, everything.)

The worst part is that they fit everywhere else! The stupid zipper is about 1-2 inches smaller in circumference than any other part of the pant. Terrible design and not worth a red cent.

    Tricky fit

    • Size Bought: 6L

Fit well - I am 5"9". However, if you have large thighs these pants will be too tight at the zipper area.

    Flattering and functional

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

These are the pants Ive been looking for. I am 5'5'', 110 pounds and have a hard time finding convertible pants that don't fit like pajama pants. The slim leg is flattering but not restricting, the waist fits perfectly. Even after wearing these for several days in a row, they don't get baggy and saggy. I just wish the shorts were a little shorter, they hit just above the knee. I ordered a size 2 reg.

    No stretch in the zipper

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

Something went wrong when Columbia was designing these because when standing up they fit like a charm, but any time you have to bend down, sit down, or stretch, you'll feel your legs becoming restricted by the zippers on the legs. And I do not have larger than usual thighs.

Ignoring the leg zipper issue, these pants are everything a woman could want in hiking pants, just don't plan on being comfortable when sitting down in these.

    absolute FAVORITE hiking pants!!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

My main concern in buying any hiking pants is length, as a 5' 10" woman Columbia always supplies the long lengths I need. But not only do these fit perfectly for leg length, they also are the most flattering pair of hiking pants I have ever owned. The cut and style is very feminine without having to be clingy and sticky. I am a huge fan of convertible pants and love wearing these just as shorts some days. The only thing I could see being a problem for some ladies is the zippered part of the pants. Another customer made mention of this as well but when I sit down, the zippered area constricts a lot and if my thighs were larger, it would be very very uncomfortable. But overall, these are my go-to hiking pants for hot, sticky, humid, tick infested Virginia hikes. A second pair is already in my shopping cart!

    Great pants!

These are great pants, they are durable and very comfortable. Not to mention the fact that on a day when it starts out cool you can start out with long pants, and as it gets toasty out you simply unzip the legs and now you have shorts. The pockets are also great for storage of gear, keys, phone and shell/rocks things that one might collect along the way. I strongly recommend these pants to anyone!

Nice pants but not for me.

My experience is that these are true to size. However, for someone who has been riding horses her whole life these pants a quite snug around the thighs. To be more specific, the zipper is a bit too tight. The pants themselves are very stretchy.

        How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
Measure from the top of the interior leg to the bottom of the ankle.
