UPF 50+ Light Leg Sleeves

The Solare fabric used in Castelli's UPF 50 Plus Light Leg Sleeves is a synthetic blend with a polyester base, so the Sleeves wick moisture and breathe like a more efficient layer of second skin. Unlike the actual skin they protect, though, the UPF 50 Plus Leg Skins protect against the harmful rays of the sun. Cyclists tend to spend a lot more time under the sun than other endurance athletes, so the added bit of protection is especially appreciated in the saddle. The Leg Sleeves' efficient moisture management also mean they keep you warmer in cool conditions, so they're ideal companions to pack in a pocket during long, July climbs and pull on to ward off speed wobbles caused by shivering during high-speed, chilly descents. Your legs are your engines; treat them well.

  • Leg sleeves for riding in sunny, cool weather
  • Solare fabric wicks away moisture and breathes well
  • UPF 50+ defends you against the sun's harmful rays
  • Fast-drying fabric minimizes chills in cool weather
  • Form-fitting design layers easily and won't bunch

Does the job

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: L

I have used these many times over the summer. It is perfect at providing sun protection. The material is light and breezy even in SC heat and humidity. Your legs move enough to provide plenty of airflow to keep them nice and cool.

After many rides, the gripper stopped working after riding for an hour or two. The sleeve would just start slipping down my thighs and would end up around my ankles. You can pull these under your bibs to help hold them up, but I still have had problems with it slipping.

Eventually I got a rip by the top seam. It looks like there are little holes in the fabric around the top gripper. This is where mine failed. If you look at my picture, those mini-holes are all the way around the top of both of my sleeves.

Unlike some of the other reviewers, I have not had an issue with the zipper.

I also have the arm sleeves and those have been perfect so far! Your arms move far less than your legs, so the gripper has a better chance of working.

I ordered a large and that seemed to work for a while until I started having issues with it slipping. I did not lose any major weight during this period. For reference, my quads are 19.5" (~5" above my knee). I am a road cyclist and typically ride 2-3 hours when I am using these.

Does the job

They work well, but cheaply made

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The good: These do the trick for the sun in the middle of summer, they are lightweight and breathe well. They seemed to stay in place and the grippers worked well. I got a couple of comments from other cyclists who didn't understand they were summer weight and thought I was just wearing tights in 90 degree weather lol.

The bad: First time I put them on, the fabric near the gripper tore as I was pulling them up my thigh. My first thought is that maybe i was too rough, but even being super careful on the other leg, they have both continued to tear at the place where the gripper meets the fabric on the thighs. As another reviewer mentioned, the zippers are not very comfortable either.

Again, I like them in that they do the trick, was just disappointed that the build quality had them tearing on the first wear.

FYI, I also have the arm sleeves as well and no quality issues with those (yet).

Nice and light

  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

I bought this leg sleeve on white and black for this coming summer, they feel good and are very light, good quality, can’t wait to wear them.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I ordered the black version size large. I am 6’1” with slender legs. They fit well enough but think a Medium might have been better and provided more compression. I actually have used them less as sun screens but more of a warmer during some “chilly” rides (high 40’s to low 50’s). Not thermal but just enough protection from the chill and wind to keep my legs comfortable. Sunny and over 70 these black ones really got hot. I like the versatility as they are very compact to carry and are very easy to put on or take off as weather conditions change. If using primarily as sun screens I would opt for the white ones. Regarding the zippers mentioned by another reviewer, I had no problem with them and do not effect comfort although I agree they are not really necessary.

Perfect for poison oak protection

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: large (although I have pretty thick legs)

I live in Los Angeles area and was looking for a light leg sleeve to provide cover against poison oak that I would get on my legs almost every time I ride on tight single track around here. I have had these Castelli sun sleeves for over a year now, use them once or twice a week and they are still working great -- never slip or anything, and very breathable. I would highly recommend and will probably buy another pair.

Good fabric but zippers

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I have used Castelli knee length sun protection sleeves for years and they are great. I thought I would get the full length but they have zippers. Who needs zippers in a sun protection sleeve? Zippers make them uncomfortable. Will be returning for the pearl izumi without zippers.

P.I. would not stay up on my thighs, Castelli does.
