Why We Like The Alpha RoS 2 Jacket

For those of us who have not been swooned by months of indoor training during winter, Castelli’s new Alpha RoS 2 Jacket provides a feature-heavy barrier against nature’s bite, ensuring the miles are logged even in the harshest conditions. Continuing Castelli’s impeccable lineage of inclement weather, performance clothing, the Alpha RoS 2 gets a double-layered Alpha construction comprising an inner insulation layer and outer Gore-Tex Infinium wind and water barrier. The layers provide protection down to 23 degrees F as well as superior wind and water resistance to brace against pocket showers or a ride-long drencher.

Castelli manages to engineer subtle and effective traits into the Alpha RoS 2 that, at first glance go unnoticed, but act as welcomed finishing touches you’ll appreciate during mixed weather riding. Further adding to the comfort and warmth characteristics are the high neck, which prevents cold air rushing on the chest, and the double layer cuffs that seal out water and wind, as well as allowing for expert fitting under gloves. A water-resistant zipper and taped shoulder seams seal out areas that are prone to water ingress, while discreet back flaps vent out heat to maintain comfort on rides up to 50 degrees F and during intense interval sessions. Castelli adds drainage holes to the pockets, which provide an extra dose of security compared to the mesh openings of previous jackets, and a zipper side-pocket corrals valuables for the long haul.

  • Winter-ready cycling jacket faces the elements in comfort and style
  • Double layer Alpha construction insulates and shields from nature’s bite
  • Gore-Tex wind and water barrier also provide stretch in riding position
  • Water-resistant zipper and double-layer cuff discourage water entry
  • Upper-back venting channels manage heat buildup while training
  • Reflect drain holes on pockets won’t slow you down
  • Rated from 23-50 degrees F

Perfect winter jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Size Bought: XL

Pricey but worth it. Perfect fit. High quality constrains materials. The dual layers with zippers work well for temperature management.

With a thermal base layer (Under Armor 3.0), the jacket is warm down to mid-20 degree temps on a cloudy day on a relaxed gravel ride. Also tried it in freezing rain in low to mid-30 temps and it kept me warm and dry with an Under Armor 2.0 base layer. I can see it working well with a thin short sleeve base layer into the mid 40s.

Great recommendation from Kyle Brown.

Perfect winter jacket

Castelli RoS2

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Sweet jacket. Warm and breathable, snug and pretty. Been comfortable down to mid-30’s, even on descents. Wind protection up front on, vented back. Worth every penny. Runs small. I’m 5’8 165lbs. XL is perfect fit.

Perfection without regrets

As my deep winter jacket gave its last full measure, I needed a stellar replacement and have found it in the Castelli Alpha RoS 2. Having had awesome experiences with the Castelli Alpha RoS Light jacket, I hoped that the bigger sibling would deliver in the below freezing morning darkness. Wow, even with the “Light” experience, I wasn’t overly confident that upper teens to low twenties would be a happy place. Seriously; this jacket ROCKS. Vary the base layer and I have a tool that picks up at 44F where “Light” drops out. Have explored very heave is summer sleeveless, two layers (bas and Alpha) as the right stuff. Just as happy spinning the wind and weather at 45F as I am at 25F! Love how the cuffs integrate with gloves, over, under or middle! Don’t pass Go, don’t collect…just buy it already, with zero regrets! For sizing, I am 6’1’’ / 175 lbs and am really happy with XL for both Alpha RoS versions. May have to become a RoS fanboy, as this my third Castelli RoS piece (Perfetto Light gloves as well) and the perfection is amazing

Extremely small sizing

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: XL

I wear predominantly Assos, Castelli, Giordana and Mavic bike clothing. I have a good amount of Castelli items. I have always purchased in Large size. Due to other reviews, I sized up to XL. This jacket is very very undersized and I don’t know why Castelli changed cut and sizing. So, buy at least a size larger and don’t be surprised if it is still very small.

As Good As They Say

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: XXL

This is hands down the best cycling jacket I’ve ever worn. If you buy one piece of kit for fall through spring riding, this should be it.
I’ve ridden from sub freezing to high 50’s (F) in this with various base layers and it is perfect!

A True Winter Jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

This is your jacket for insulation and protection on deep-winter rides. With only a summer-weight, short sleeve base layer underneath this jacket is almost too much. On alpine climbs, in 25-30 degree F (at moderate riding intensity), I'll have to unzip to the base layer to avoid overheating. And on the descents, I'll zip up and not even have a goosebump. The double-layer construction allows your upper body to laugh at the frigid air moving over it, and the water-resistant fabric keeps you dry when riding over snowmelt or under passing rainstorms.

A True Winter Jacket

Versatile and great quality

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Medium

Not cheap...but great value! Innovative cuffs work well with gloves and keep the wind out. Nice thermal inner lining with wind proof shell. Offers option to unzip the outside to let in air.

Only warning...it runs small. I’m 5’9” and 160 lbs and the medium I bought is gonna motivate me not to gain another pound.

Mission Accomplished

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: XL

I've had some good jackets before (lots of Gore Bike Wear, Windstopper is a must). It was time for me to get some a new jacket and I wanted a pair that let me ride confidently year round in Utah with minimal additional layers. This Castelli jacket is form-fitting (typical Castelli) and plenty warm, and I bought the XL because I like it a smidge loose, not skin tight. I wore them today and flying down a canyon for 15 min in 22 degree weather was a good test. My extremities had me thinking frostbite, but my upper body was fine (same with my legs due to Castelli Polare 2).

I love the sleeve endings on these, they complement gloves very well. The hip pockets are spacious, and the side zipper pocket is good for the valuables. I also love how high the collar is on this jacket.

These are trim enough to wear under a bigger puffy coat for extreme cold situations. I also plan on using these for skinning up ski resorts this winter.

How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.
