Record 12 UT Carbon Crankset

A crankset, to us at least, represents the heart of the drivetrain. Its where our power gets delivered into the bike and it's often where our eyes are drawn to first when checking out a bike. Updated for the newest 12-speed redesign, the Record 12 UT Carbon Crankset from Campagnolo still uses its excellent Ultra-Torque design and is refined with a spider and ring assembly that provides more stiffness and a chainline that’s optimized for anything from a 130mm rim brake frame to a 142mm disc one without affecting the original Q-factor.

The unique engineering of the Ultra-Torque design places the bearings further apart, for better stability, and are captured on the crank's spindle rather than pressed into a cup. By doing so, the bearings receive less of a radial load for a reduction in friction and a boost in longevity. We're also a fan of the steel axle with a self-centering, self-aligning Hirth joint connection that's often used elsewhere in automobiles and industry where a secure connection and high torque applications are common and durability is paramount. The arms now have only one access hole for the joining bolt meaning the driveside arm is smooth and uninterrupted for a clean look.

Perhaps the biggest changes to the crank occur at the spider and chainrings. Expanding on the design that took the arms down from 5 to 4 on the last generation, the crank now sees two bolt patterns for the chainrings (112 and 145mm) which reduces weight and comes with an increase in torsional stiffness. The new, sculptured spider shape creates a lighter, stiffer crankset for positive power delivery and crisp shifts. Like their predecessors, the new Record crank arms are strategically hollowed in areas that don't need the extra reinforcement in order to reduce weight compared to the new Chorus model, which is only hollow on the non-drive side.

Instead of sharing one set of five chain ring coupling holes, both rings now get the benefit of their own set, for eight in total. This effectively standardizes the crankset's bolt circle diameter and lets you switch from compact to standard rings without swapping the entire unit. The rings have a varying number of pins, depending on the chainring combination, with corresponding up- and downshift zones for immediate shifting engagement. For those marginal gains, all three options are also more aerodynamic, with a hole-free design on the lateral side of the cranks.

Due to the upgrades from previous model years, the Record 12 UT crankset will only work with 12-speed Record and Super Record drivetrains.
