Because you really aren’t a bike messenger.

Messenger bags are stylish, but when it comes to regular old commuting minus the rush of the big city, the Blackburn Local Rear Pannier is a better option. The Local mounts on any standard rear rack. While removing the bag from your rack is a bit more involved than just jumping off your bike, pack at the ready, it’s a heck of a lot more comfortable.

The interior of the Local Rear Pannier carries 793 cubic inches of your valuables in convenient organizational pockets. The main body fabric is 210 denier polyester that’s been treated, so it’s abrasion- and water-resistant. A padded exterior pocket keeps your cellphone, MP3 player, or sunglasses safe and secure. While the Local is compatible with most rear racks, it can be locked when used with Blackburn’s Interlock system, adding even more versatility to an already utilitarian pack.

    Best of what I've tried

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought three different panniers in search for the best... this is the one I'm keeping. It feels solid when attached a Blackburn rack. It is fairly roomy, I like the small pockets under the flap.
Overall pretty nice, I hope I made a good decision in keeping this.

    Goes into the spokes

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought 2 from a local bike shop about a year ago. I use these with a Blackburn rack. When I position this forward on the rack it hits my heels. When I move it back to the center stay on the rack it goes into the spokes. I have checked and rechecked all the adjustments on the bag. I have had this happen 3 times. The bottom back of the bag is now quite torn. Fortunately I haven't had any wrecks because of this. Usually I am impressed by Blackburn gear but not this time. I have stiffened the bag by putting foam core board inside and that helps considerably. I use one mostly and it is the one that is torn, see attached photos, the other one is like new. Also the stitching on the top is coming undone. I bought 2 and wish I had only purchased one. In the future I will buy panniers one at a time to make sure they work out for me. My wife has the Ortlieb bags and they preform much better.

    Very durable

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is a durable and solid pannier. I've taken extra precautions to waterproof my own stuff but this is a solid option for panniers.
