Like it's not even there

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The Vapor is so light and fits really well, even with a beanie on. You truly don't even notice it's there, which means there's no reason to not always be wearing it around the crag or in the alpine. Minor dents and scratches will happen fairly easily if it gets tossed around, but it's not too much of a problem.

Lightweight!!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Light and fits well. It is fragile but it's great for longer multi pitch climbs where every oz counts. Recommended.

Best Helmet on the market

You can climb in this helmet all day and forget that you even have it on. It is unbelievable breathable and ultra light weight. This is a must buy!

    Love it!

I have used this helmet for several seasons now and I love it!
It fits the head perfect with or without a hat/beanie and doesn't shift at all. Not to mention how light it is. Overall it is just really comfortable and you don't notice it is there. Highly recommend it.

Didn't even realize I was wearing it..

if you're looking for something that is light weight, breathable and fits well I would recommend this helmet. It is not the most durable helmet though, it got several dents in it just from being transported in my luggage.
    Would still recommend it!

I often wore a toque under it and it still fit me well.

    Great But Not Perfect

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love this helmet-- it fits and moves well and is the lightest weight helmet I have found. However, it dents very easily and seems very thin and fragile. I imagine if a sharp rock or high velocity projectile hit me in the head it would probably go right through this shell and foam and still penetrate my head, unlike some other helmets which are thicker and feel much more dense and solid. In addition, the giant openings in the helmet (which are great for ventilation on hot days) would easily allow smaller rocks or ice to pass right through my head. These openings in the helmet are so big that I have even caught carabiners and slings on them while putting them over my head/shoulder on multipitch climbs. This helmet is still much better than nothing, so I still use it primarily for hard or long climbs where exhaustion is a factor, but I don't use it where rockfall/icefall risk is particularly high.

    How to size?

Damn Fine Helmet and Light Too

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I purchased the Vapor helmet to replace an older Black Diamond helmet and while I was sad to see my old partner leave...I love the new helmet. The helmet is uber light and fits snugly on the head with their quick adjust / fit functionality. Having experience with combat helmets from Team Wendy and Ops Core, it's great to see climbing helmets embracing quick fit / custom fit technology. The helmet is not designed to be banged around and stomped on but, it serves its purpose well...protect the head from incidental damage. The helmet provides plenty of ventilation which keeps condensation and sweat down to a minimum. In addition, the pads do not retain a lot of moisture so, a swampy helmet is not a concern. I would definitely recommend this helmet to anyone that is doing climbing where head protection is desired but, a heavy-duty helmet is not required.

    Fits well, breaks easily.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Black Diamond's climbing helmets fit me really well.
I appreciate how light and comfortable the vapor is - I hardly notice wearing it and it adjusts to accommodate a hat or beanie.
The Vapor is definitely fragile but I don't think it is much more breakable than other EPS foam climbing helmets.
I dented mine skiing this winter, then accidentally dropped it bouncing down an Indian Creek approach. One side is pretty cracked up and I got BD's Vector helmet as a replacement - I've heard it is a bit more durable.

    Love this helmet!

Light, comfortable, well ventilated! This is my favorite helmet of all time. I would recommend it to anyone. Ditto all the other 5 star reviews!

    light an comfortable

Helmet was very comfortable on my climb, very light and easy to adjust, love the adapters that held the head lamp and Go pro secured.

Thanks for the review Jose and great photo of you in action!

Where did my helmet go? ...on my head

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I tend to sweat a lot and tried a few different helmets. They all made me not want to wear them and it was a huge turn off. I finally decided to spend the extra money and this thing just fits perfect. It is very well engineered to strudyness, packs smaller, and VENTILATION!!! When it was a little colder i had a beanie on and we were passing the helmet among the climbers going up. The constant battle was someone would ask for it and the person realizing would look around and not realize it was on! Spend the extra to protect your dome and be comfortable. Also mad style points

Awesome review Jason! Glad your stoked on this helmet!

      Worth It

Don't let the price point scare you away. I'm in love with this helmet for so many reason.
      1. 5 panel hat fits under it really well
      2. Ratcheting suspension tucks into the helmet for compact storage. It ALSO, grips the back of my head very well to keep the helmet in place
      3. It looks stinking cool!
      4. Super strong and light weight
      5. Breaths very well
My favorite part about the Vapor is that I forget it's on. That has been a huge selling point for me since other helmets can be a hassle or uncomfortable.
This helmet is for ALL types of climbing and I've used it for cragging, multi-pitch, alpine and ice. It'll do it all.

      Rad Helmet

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought this for a trip to Red Rocks and haven't been disappointed. At the first crag where we climbed, I put it on and completely forgot about it. It is well ventilated for warmer weather, or can be worn with a hood and hat in the cold. Naturally, the finish got pretty scuffed up by the rocks and cacti around, but the helmet itself stayed intact.

      Light is Right

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

      This helmet is near-perfect.

Having previously worn a BD Half Dome and tried on about every other climbing helmet available, I believe you can't do much better than the Black Diamond Vapor. It's comfortable enough to wear all day and forget it's even there. It's low-profile design keeps you from bumping against everything in sight, and doesn't look like you're wearing a mixing bowl on your head. It ventilates extremely well, and adjusts to fit anybody quickly and easily. The only complaint- it's not as sturdy as other hardshell helmets. It sheds bumps and scrapes and even minor rockfall well; but take a big hit or put too much weight on it and it'll fracture and require replacement. Just don't stow it at the bottom of your pack and it'll last you a lifetime, or at least prevent your time from being cut short.

You can't go wrong with this helmet. Try one on; if it fits your head-- buy it.

      Light Weight Helmet

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The lightest helmet Black Diamond has on the market - I hear rumors they are coming out with a women's specific version and can't wait to get my hands on that. IF you don't like wearing a helmet while rock/ice climbing - this is the one for you - barely know it's even on your head.

      Light Weight Helmet

      Great Helmet

Worn it so much, the inside pads are falling apart. Do you guys know if I could buy or get a hold of new ones?

WOW! Now this is a lightweight helmet!

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I was a little worried about ordering a helmet online. I know Backcountry perfect return policy, but didn't want to deal with the whole back and forth with trying on helmets via the mail.
BC had a sale and I bought this helmet due to its original price, weight, and the amount of ventilation. How could you go wrong with a BD product anyway?
Initial impressions... wow, it is like wearing nothing at all. Almost feels as comfortable to wear as my daily baseball cap. It is very easy to fit the helmet to your head due to the ratcheting system.
I had cracked my forehead as a kid, wasn't wearing a helmet, and most helmets have a pressure point on the front of my forehead. This helmet has a very comfortable feel and has never given me a headache that I unfortunately associate with helmets.

Would this helmet work for biking in the city as well ?

Couldn't hurt. Climbing helmets are not certified to be biking helmets but having this on your dome would be better than not.

        Sweet Helmet

I haven't used this helmet yet on alpine adventures where I need to attach a headlamp, and that's a bit of a concern outstanding. But, its super light, and great feeling for cragging. Lots of air movement as well.
