    Just add juice.

We've all been there—you finish setting up camp just before sundown and then turn on your headlamp to see it flicker its last bit of light as soon as you turn it on. Normally, you're out of luck if you didn't bring spare batteries; not so with the Black Diamond ReVolt Headlamp. It features AAA batteries that are rechargeable via USB, so you can charge it through your car output, solar panel, or laptop. You can even toss in some regular AAA batteries in a pinch.

Dial in the right amount and type of light for the task at hand with proximity, distance, strobe, red night-vision, and dimmer settings. An adjustable headband allows for hands-free illumination, and a tilt function gets you the right angle for seeing what's coming at you. The three-level power meter takes the guesswork out of how much juice you have left.

    • Compact headlamp that's rechargeable via USB
    • Includes 3 rechargeable AAA batteries
    • Multiple modes handle a wide variety of tasks
    • Three-level power meter shows battery life for three seconds
    • IPX8 waterproof rating submersion up to 1 meter
    • Night-vision mode activates without cycling through white light

Buyer beware! The older version of this headlamp was only rated to IPX4 water resistance (splash protection rather than full submersion) and is woefully inadequate for hiking in prolonged wet conditions. I experienced rusting in the battery compartment and intermittent failure with the old version on a Long Trail hike in rainy fall conditions. Black Diamond has acknowledged this glaring design flaw with a "redesigned, now fully waterproof" IPX8 version, but there may still be inventory of the old model out there. has two product listings, one for the old IPX4 version and one for the new IPX8 version. However, the product images on the website are backwards between the new and old version which leads me to think that Backcountry may not have their inventory correctly sorted on this one. If you order this headlamp, carefully inspect the fine print on the packaging when it arrives and MAKE SURE it says IPX8 raher than IPX4. If you get an IPX4 version I strongly suggest returning it for refund immediately.

      Won't charge, brand new.

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

What a disappointment. I bought this light specifically so I could recharge it and not throw away alkaline batteries anymore. I have had it for less than a week and it already won't charge. I plug it in and it blinks red which according to the instructions means that something is wrong with the batteries. They are the new batteries that came with the light. I guess I will either be using alkaline or buying a new set of black diamond's special batteries. I'm sure there is a warranty and I'm sure that Backcountry will take care of it for me but it's a bummer that it doesn't just work the way it is supposed to.

      An All-Purpose Flashlight

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Easy to use and simple to recharge vis USB. Purchased for outdoor activities, but used more often around the house. Battery life seems to be good, but have not yet run all the way down as recharging is so easy.

      Still early, but . . .

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I just received this and the first impression is not that great. The controls are pretty confusing and not intuitive at all. One large button that you push in different places to do different things and one "kind of button" on the side that gives a power boost but then you can't turn if off from the side button, but you can also accomplish the same thing with the big button by pressing it in the right places in the right sequence. Also, i seriously doubt it is water proof, given that you can see the battery contact metal in the gap where the latch is.

My daughter is taking in the Montana back country for three weeks, so will give an update when she is back.

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

You cant go wrong with Black Diamond head lamps. Gives off great light and is easy to use. Great for all outdoor camping and hiking adventures.

      Let there be LIGHT

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This headlamp rocks. For the price, it is hard to beat this brightness, size, customization, and ease of use. It is also waterproof and lasts a long time.

Can't think of any negatives really.

      Recharge is the best!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought this mainly for it's recharging capabilities. I tend to forget to change batteries or leave the headlamp on and the batteries drain.. this headlamp negates both those mistakes. Charge it on the fly or grab regular triple A batteries, options are always helpful! It also has an option to turn the power off completely so there's not accidental battery drain in your pack.

I appreciate the multiple light settings, although it can be confusing to remember how to access each of them. I love that the red light can be dimmed, along with the double and triple power LED.

Considering how many head lamps are on the market, I felt the price point was decent for this lamp and it has held up well in the 2 years I've had it.

      Great head lamp

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Got this lamp for a Yurt trip and it did its job! It's a great lamp with multiple setups and it feels comfortable on the head. I would totally buy it again.

      Great Headlamp

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This is a great headlamp, it is comfortable with many setups for the light and brightness, takes sometime to learn all of them.
The rechargeable batteries that came in the box did not work.

      Solid headlamp, intelligent design

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I am quite happy with this headlamp, I like the wide variety of brightness options and the rechargeability while still having the option of using regular batteries is awesome. I specifically ordered it for the waterproofing rating as I plan to use it for paddling trips. The one thing that I will have to get used to is the button control to change from the spot setting to area and to red, and to adjust brightness in each mode. With only one button it takes a while to figure out what pattern of clicks or various timing of holding down on the button causes which change of function. I’ll get it down I’m sure, and I am very satisfied with this light.

      Amazing headlamp!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I'm loving this design so far. The locking feature is a must, so you don't have to worry about your batteries dying on you for no reason. I also love the ability to adjust the light intensity with the different settings. It really can be whatever you want it to be, and is in a nice weatherproof package.

Great for dawn patrols and camping

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This headlamp is great for it's brightness and packability. For camping, you can easily set up a tent, cook, etc. with how bright it is. Also, you can't beat it for backcountry ski tours.

      Night Vision

Finally a rechargeable headlamp that is still bright! I’ve a had a couple USB charging headlamps and this is the first time I’ve noticed it actually being as bright as your standard AAA loaded lamps. Perfect for around camp and bright enough for night adventures.

        Wear sunglasses

Bright so its good for super dim settings.

          Light'r UP!

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is a great all around headlamp. comfortable strap, so many settings - probably more than you need. And it's USB rechargeable. It does take batteries but who has time for those anymore? not me. When it counts, batteries can be a pain to find, where as I almost always have a usb device handy that can charge this headlamp right up. It's super bright and gives you an indicator as to how much charge is left on the headlamp. Would definitely recommend!

          Burn Bright!

          • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

A solid little light, especially for the price. Burly, easy to use, and will last pretty long on one charge too.

          great headlamp

Love this headlamp! bright and easy to charge

            Not bright enough

I’m disappointed with the amount of light this puts out, but it’s just barely enough for me to keep it. I dig the rechargeable-ness of it though.

              Nice Headlamp

This headlamp is great for camping or throwing in you pack for hikes. It is super bright for the size and is a reasonable price. What's not to love?
