Icon Headlamp

Back and better than ever, the Icon Headlamp is Black Diamond's most powerful headlamp for alpinists, climbers, trail runners, and adventurers pushing it before dawn and after dusk. The Icon is packed with one QuadPower LED spotlight and one DoublePower white LED for a powerful punch of 500 lumens with optional brightness memory—providing visibility for up to 360 feet into the darkness ahead of you.

Red, green, and blue night vision modes accommodate everything from nighttime reading in your bivy to lacing up your boot liners at three in the morning. New this year is the removable battery pack, which is easy to stash in a pocket to preserve battery life when temperatures drop. The rugged, dustproof, and fully-sealed housing is waterproof up to 1 meter for 30 minutes with no maintenance needed after submersion, which is more than you can say for your climbing partner.

  • Black Diamond's most powerful headlamp for alpinists
  • Unparalleled 500 lumens with two bright LEDs
  • Red, green, and blue night vision and dimming options
  • Optional brightness memory programming
  • Removable battery pack with included longer cable
  • Dustproof and waterproof construction

BD Headlamp Icon 500

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

complete piece of garbage. absolute junk. the plastic piece that holds the headband to the battery pack broke while I was putting it together. if Black Diamond gear can't survive the rigors of assembly while sitting at my dining room table how's it going to perform when your keister is on the line in the actual wilderness. I've had other experiences with poor quality stuff from BD in regards to their back packs and other headlamps of theirs. I should have learned my lesson. Caveat emptor when buying BD products. Having said that I own old BD C 4 cams that I love. They were made in the mid 2000's so maybe their quality control process was more robust back then

Not sure what I was expecting

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: one

The price was $50 which was "50% off" I bought this headlamp thinking I was getting a great deal. First off it is very heavy at over 8 ounces with batteries. It is nice to be able to situate the batteries at your hips rather than your head so that is a plus. I love the red mode and how once you learn the functions its not hard to cycle through. Black diamond makes very reliable products so I don't expect it to falter anytime soon.
All and all I would not recommend this UNLESS you do serious night hiking. Otherwise you are better off with either the black diamond spot headlamps or a nitecore for 3oz

Advertised beam distance incorrect

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

The advertised 110-meter beam distance, in reality, is closer to 20 meters on a full battery. 20 meters is a generous estimate.

I hike, scramble, and climb at night in the Pacific Northwest. Most nights have overcast clouds that block moonlight. Without a light, I can't see my hand in front of my face. A reliable spotlight is vital to off-trail route-finding.

While I trust this the robust build quality and battery longevity, the light emitted is insufficient for dedicated nighttime travel.

Are you sure your commenting about the same light as everyone else ? Lol

Sounds like user error or something since I know people who have one, have seen it reviewed and compared in reviews, and even that gear review site literally measured the beam distance. Do you know how to adjust the brightness? Or are you on the correct headlamp page?

Alpine start

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I like the head lamp. It definitely gives off plenty of light and being able to store batteries close to your body helps on cold alpine starts.
I also like the colored beam options....makes you able to move around in the tent without blinding your partner constantly.
My only concern is the amount of options.....I often have to fiddle around until I get the beam I’m looking for...I wish it had red, low ,and high beam....I don’t really need all the other features.
Overall I like the product.

Blinded by the light

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I got this for my husband who had been eyeing it for a while. It's super bright and the detachable battery pack is awesome for pursuits in cold weather so you can store it in a warm spot

Lights up the trail

I purchased this headlamp for when I'm finishing up a tour and the sun has gone down. It has been great at illuminating the path and projects a really wide beam which is considerably brighter than your average headlamp. Battery life is really solid too.

    Great Headlamp!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The Icon is Legit! Not only does this have the best battery life of any in the 500 lumen range, it also offers a wide range of color and brightness options!

    Great headlamp

I use this headlamp for touring and just outdoors stuff. Works great. one of the best in the market

      Built for the Night

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This headlamp is super bright as other reviewers have mentioned, and you easily could blind your friends. Solidly built with a long burn time. I also find this lamp to be surprisingly comfortable. The points that contact your forehead and the back of your head are ergonomic and have some light padding that seems like it will hold up for a while. The straps are comfortable as well. Not the lightest but light enough, especially for what it provides. This lamp light will light up the darkest night.

Too Many Features, If That's Possible

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This headlamp easily has the best battery life of any in the 500 lumen range thanks to the use of AAA batteries rather than a rechargeable unit. It is plenty bright and offers a wide range of color and brightness options which is great, however, with only one button used to switch between each mode and control the adjustable brightness, it can take many tries and combination of button presses to get it into the mode you're looking for.

      Bright and durable headlamp

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I like this headlamp so much that i actually bought two of them. I really enjoy the different settings and how bright it can get. I also appreciate the lower light settings for early morning conversations with friends when you dont want to blind them.

      Bright and Long Lasting

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I nearly blinded myself while using this headlamp for the first couple times! I absolutely love the power tap feature on its side that instantly brings the headlamp to maximum brightness. Although a little bulky, this headlamp is great for nights spent in the mountains, especially in more rugged terrain.

      Bright and lightweight headlamp

I got this headlamp to do fieldwork but I’ve also used it in combination with a niterider 550 to do night riding and it works like a dream with the extension and chest strap that’s included.

        Lumens, Lumens, Lumens

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I was tired of low-lumen headlamps so I pulled the trigger on the BD Icon and couldn't be happier. This isn't a headlamp designed for trail running as it is a heavier headlamp with the battery pack positioned on the back of your head. You do have the option of using the extra harness system and/or longer power cord which allows you to move the battery pack from your head to either the harness system or a pack/jacket pocket. This would make it more comfortable for trail running.
I've loved the lamp so far and if you haven't used a headlamp from BD yet, their system to change the color/brightness of the lamp is very easy to understand and simple to use. I picked this up specifically for mountaineering purposes and night skiing as having a lot of lumens really comes in handy.
I acutally used this on a ski mountaineering trip to Mount Hood recently and it worked great! I've included a photo so you can get an idea of how it would look That's me in the back with the crazy look in my eyes haha, I was pretty excited to be climbing Hood. I've also embedded a video from the BD website that takes you through all the awesome features on this headlamp.

        Lumens, Lumens, Lumens

        Decent light

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

It's bright and lasts for a while on 4 AA batteries. I use the light for activities like night hiking but it is a little to big/heavy for trail running. Personally I'd prefer the light in a rechargeable version.

        Lotta Lumens!

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I primarily use this for hiking, biking, ski touring, and hunting. However I get the most use out of it in the backyard with my grill. I like the battery pack since it lasts forever, even though it is a little heavy. I also like that it has 3 different color settings to use in various conditions. The battery harness is a nice add, however I am not sure I would actually use it.
