A winter necessity.

Whether you're looking for a jacket to wear to a New Year's firework show or as an insulating layer on those particularly biting ski days, the Basin and Range Men's Wasatch 800 Hooded Down Jacket keeps you warm. Constructed from recycled polyester fabric, this jacket is insulated with 800-fill down for serious warmth. It is also highly compressible, so you can stash it in your pack without it taking up too much space. A hood lets you retreat behind an extra layer of downy warmth when the wind begins to blow, and an adjustable drawcord hem helps keep cold out.

  • A winter jacket that offers serious warmth in or out of town
  • Responsibly sourced down provides high warmth-to-weight ratio
  • Insulated hood for extra protection
  • Headphone cord keeper for uninterrupted listening
  • Regular fit for easy layering

A keystone insulation piece

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: Small

The Wasatch is an excellent do-it-all piece. I've used it backcountry skiing, to the office on chilly January days, and staying cozy around the campfire. For the price, it's pretty rare to get a down jacket with 800 fill power, so the value on this thing is pretty killer. My only qualm with this jacket was the fit, I thought it was great in the shoulders, but there was a little too much room in the abdomen. It could be improved by using a stretchier face fabric and a tighter abdomen.

Overall, you're getting a great deal on this jacket. I'd recommend for anyone looking to get that all-in-one insulation piece to handle any occasion.

Great value, but... the hood

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

Nice quality down sweater. The finish is up there with the mainstream brands. Definitely "American" sizing. I'm a 40 Regular and the medium fits perfect, with room for a light to medium weight fleece top underneath. Longer tail is a nice touch.

Just elastic nylon edging at the sleeve cuffs and hood, but that is a normal feature with this style. The elastic is pretty loose, compared to a similar Patagonia sweater. The hood is pretty useless in a breeze, especially if you are not wearing a helmet. If you really need to use the hood, plan on bringing at least a light weight shell, with an adjustable hood. If you have some sewing skills, it feels like you could add some elastic accessory cord in the hood edging.

There is a phone pocket in the right hand exterior pocket and a hole to feed you earbud cord up to the cord keeper.

Needs an adjustable hood or tighter elastic hood edging, like the name brands.

A well designed Jacket worth having.

Warm, no down bleeding yet

Great jacket, it's handled the rainy and windy weekends at the track very well. The hood is large enough to fit over a beanie and that's very welcome. There have been minimal feathers coming out so either that's been worked on or it's going to happen a little farther down the road. So far, so good!

Love this coat!

Great coat that rivals the Patagonia down sweater! With 800 fill it keeps me warm and toasty on the cold ski days! Great deal on the price. Fits great, large for a 6 foot and 160lb guy.

    Wow!

This down jacket is super warm! It looks good, the quality feels good and it will keep you warm on the freezing weather. I'd recommend this to anyone.

I bought this jacket as a Christmas present for my dad, and he absolutely loves it. He uses it primarily as a mid layer with his Acteryx Beta AR, but said it is great to wear on more mild days as a stand alone.

      Perfect Jacket

      great jacket

Like the other reviews said, this does run a little big. Its a great puffy that keeps me warm! I got a small and it has a great fit! I usually wear mediums in other things, but the small fits perfect. I like how low it comes down over my butt and the sleeves are nice and long,
Just a real nice puffy. I would recommend to anyone!

      Runs Big!

So the website made the jacket look fitted, but when I put on the medium I was swimming in it. My gearhead recommended going down a size but also recommended a thicker and heavier jacket based on my planned trip to Alta, Norway. Ultimately, I went with layering two down jackets, my old Patagonia Synthetic Down and my new Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer Down Jacket.

Nevertheless, I really wanted to like this jacket, but it wasn't meant to be.

This was my first down jacket and was impressed how much warmer it was than my polyester filled jacket of about the same size. I've had it for about three weeks now and have worn it quite a few times, both in and outdoors and havent had any issues with down coming out, at least nothing that alarmed me; there were a few small feathers when i first got it but havent seen anything since. Be aware though, the inside "pockets" arent actually pockets and there is a hole at the bottom, so you could loose something small. However a phone would stay put in them. These "pockets" are just the zippered pockets on the outside that have been stitched to the inside so they aren't moving around,

      Good Cheap Down Jacket

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I picked this up for $65 off Steep and Cheap and it's definitely worth it. I'd pay up to ~ $100 for this jacket. The sizing is decent for the most part - 6'2", 180 lbs and large is good for the sleeves, slightly large throughout the body. The hood is the only thing that doesn't fit - it looks like it's sized for helmet compatibility, but doesn't have any adjustability, which makes it useless with just a beanie. I wore it today in 10 deg F weather (dry, no wind) with just a North Face TKA 100 fleece mid layer and it was just warm enough

      I like

I have the non-hooded version of this jacket. Since I can't find that on here, I'm reviewing under this product, since they are the same jacket, just with or without hood!
Sizing: True to size. Buy the size you normally would - nothing crazy here. The cut is normal. It is not tailored or slimming at all. I guess you could say it a standard straight down from the armpit to the waist. The arms feel tight, but I think that its because the down is so lofty it just feels tight. But the armpits actually are tight. You know those t-shirts that fit tight in the armpits/shoulder? This fits like that. I think the pit region could be a bit more generous in roominess.
This jacket is so soft. I don't want to take it off. Very comfortable. 800-fill down is quality. I haven't noticed any large feathers leaking out yet. Just small strands that probably got caught in the stitching process, which are working there way out. Nothing major.
The inside phone pocket is actually located inside the zippered pocket. The right hand pocket to be exact. Its like a little pouch inside the pocket. Literally a pocket in a pocket. Pocket inception. Seems pretty useless, but to be honest since it's there I will probably use it anyway. My iPhone 7 fits in there, but its a snug fit with my slim case. iPhone Plus probably won't fit in there.
On a side note apart from the jacket, I love that Basin and Range's logo is the universal symbol for camping. I also love that there is like zero branding on the jacket. This jacket is very clean and simple looking.

So Good I Bought it Twice!

I love this puffy so much I bought my brother one for his birthday. The loft isn't too bulky but the coat is lightweight and oh so cozy warm. (It can be seen in both black and brick red in the photo). Sisters will verify it is much warmer than women's REI standard and Patagonia nano puff.

      is this jacket water resistant?

      Big fan of the fit

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I was in the market for a new puffy and heard that basin and range had fixed some of the down leak issues with their wasatch jackets, and so far that seems to be the case. I'm a fan of the slim fit this jacket has, I used it to climb Mt. Washington in February and it was lightweight enough to not notice whether it was on me or in my pack.

      What size did you get?

      Amazing value & surprising warm

I purchased this jacket on sale and have not regretted it. It is very warm in temps as low as the 20s. Unfortunately, it provides little protection in windy conditions, but a hardshell or layers underneath do help.

The jacket fits great, tapering in around the waste just a bit. The arms are a bit larger, so if you are slim they may feel to big for you. If you have an athletic build, the jacket is true to size. I've worn it with layers underneath and have not felt it was tight, nor did it pinch or restrict my movement. It also has been very comfortable to wear with a shell or other coat/jacket over it.

If you are able to get it on sale, it's a great buy. So much so I just ordered the jacket version of it. It would get 5 stars if the price was usually sub $150, but for $229 it does not provide enough.

arrived with a factory odor and leaking insulation. 2 months later and I'm still apologizing to people for all of the feathers floating around. who needs bread crumbs when you can leave behind a trail of white feathers. An expected amount might come out of the seam, but this jacket leaks right through the fabric.

I usually prefer jackets without a hood, but this one didn't get in the way. Light enough I didn't notice the hood, but nice to have it there when I wanted it. I'm usually right inbetween a small and medium, and the medium drown me. A small would have been perfect.
