Worst purchase I ever made

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: XL

This is by far the worst purchase I ever made from Backcountry. I wear a size 12. Based on the reviews, I decided to purchase an XL to ensure I wouldn't have the problems
mentioned by the other customers. This coat is the worst fitting coat I have ever tried on. I received this same brand of coat from my husband at Christmas. I hated it but decided to keep it as it was a gift. Super big on top and so tight on the bottom that I have to use the double zipper to unzip the bottom around the hip area every time I wear it. Over the years I have purchased 15-20 coats from Backcountry. I think I'm done. Last few were really cheap looking, and poor fitting. I purchased 3 at Christmas time! Done, done, and done.

Love it!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: S

I bought a small and although it is snug, I don’t need any added sweater to keep me warm. Length is perfect and love how lightweight and warm it is. Glad I purchased

Fluff coming out and doesn't fit well

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
  • Fit: Runs small

After opening the jacket from the packaging, there were little bits of down poking out from the seams all over the jacket. After trying it on, the bottom half didn't fit very well either.

Pictures don’t do this justice

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: L

This jacket is AMAZING!! The hand feel is so soft but also this jacket has the down quality to keep you nice and toasty. This jacket has a slightly slim fit so I did size up one size (due to preference bc I like a bigger fit) and the bottom hem has zippers you can open up to give you more room if you would like. I get SO MANY compliments on this every time I wear it.

Disappointing quality

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I'm super bummed, I got a Basin and Range coat several years ago that I absolutely loved, but this one has feathers coming out everywhere after one long dog walk, and I agree that while the top fits perfectly, the hips are a joke they're so small. I'm sending it back!

Doesn't work with wider hip bones

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: L

My bone structure is (I guess) too big for this coat. The medium should have worked, I returned it and got the large, too small in the hips, too. I'm lean, but that didn't matter. I was very bummed.

So cute but didn’t work.

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Size Bought: M

I’m more of a pear shape and this didn’t work at all. First tried the medium and it made me look like a sausage trying to escape its casing (on the bottom). I tried a large (I wear a small in t-shirts and 34B) and it was gigantic on top and the same dang size on the bottom. So bummed because it was so soft and I loved the color!

Took a chance and... Meh

I hadn’t heard of this brand and was looking at the North Face and Patagonia parkas, but the sale price reeled me in to try this one. I have had it a couple of weeks and wear it daily. PROS: I love the soft pine color, it feels warm enough in N. Illinois winter (mostly running errands), and although I was unsure I would like the side zippers I actually appreciate them. CONS: I bought this down jacket to replace one I had with a hole in it that was leaking out feathers...Well, I still leak feathers like crazy even without a hole in this. The outside material just seems too thin and I worry about snagging/tearing. The inner “media” pocket doesn’t hold a regular newer iPhone. The outside hand pockets kind of bulge out and give me a bit of a pregnant-look, but oh well. The sleeves have a weird bunching to the outer material too. Despite all this, I am cold and too tired to keep coat hunting, so I am still keeping it.

Light and warm

I debated between the blue and soft pine and ended up getting the blue one. I was a tad skeptical as I had never owned this brand before. Surprisingly, this is the best down coat I've ever owned. It is soft and very light yet keeps you warm and very comfy. If you have big legs you may think this will be too small at first but do not worry, the zippers on both sides make you move freely. I love this coat and am so glad I took a chance and got it. I highly recommend it like the other buyers mentioned.

Almost perfect

  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Xs

So I love this coat.. But... I first tried the XS, fit great everywhere except the lower body. Very low profile &!fitted for a down coat( bonus). So I tried the Small, now the shoulder are is bulky & makes my shoulders feel broader than they are.. I’m bummed, I’m returning it..

Perfect Winter Jacket!

This is such a great jacket! The fit is true to size with a little wiggle room. I love all the pockets! I love how warm it is too. It's literally the perfect jacket!

I've worn it everyday!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I am OBSESSED with this jacket. Winter is officially here in Colorado and I wear this jacket everyday.. on the way to yoga, the store, a nice dinner date... its perfect!

Cozy and Comfy

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Extra Small

I am in love with my new Basin and Range Northstar down jacket. I love the fact thats its long, the material is so soft, the color is beautiful, its light weight and still keeps you really warm. I also love the side zippers for more movement. I live in Seattle, Washington and I enjoy city strolling and also love hiking in winter. It is essential to have a coat that can do both - wear around town and also out in the mountains

Cozy and Comfy

The perfect around town down jacket!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

I got this jacket in the soft pine color and absolutely love it! The material is so soft, light weight but keeps you really warm. I live in Breckenridge, Colorado and it is necessary to have a coat that is not just cute to wear around town and out to dinner. This coat ticks all of the boxes. I would recommend sizing up if you are between sizes just to be able to comfortably layer. I am 5 foot 6 130lbs and got a small but I think the medium may have been a better choice.

The perfect around town down jacket!

Best Urban Winter Coat

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: Small

Love the long length of this coat and the color! It does run slightly large. I got a small and the sleeves are a bit long. I tightened the inner drawcords to give it shape, but I'd recommend sizing down a size from your usual. Super warm! Love the side zips to make walking easy. My favorite winter coat.

Best Urban Winter Coat

great winter parka

  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: M

I wear this parka to go to and from work in park city and around town. It fits true to size and i love the zippers on the sides for more movement when i'm getting in and out of my truck.

Chest:
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Waist:
Bend to the side and measure around the place where your waist bends, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Hip:
Stand with feet together and measure around the fullest part of the hip.
Inseam:
Measure from the crotch to the floor with no shoes.
