Deep Powder Protection.

Before you venture into deep powder, you'd better be wearing the Basin and Range Men's Empire 3L Shell Pants, because skiing pow pantless isn't quite as pleasurable as you might think. With a three-layer shell, fully taped seams, and a DWR finish, the Empires will keep you dry whether you're carving groomers on a bluebird day or finding deep powder stashes on a storm day. In those times you do need to lose a little heat, you can open up the two inner thigh vents to let a little cool air circle through—just remember to zip them back up before you get into the deep stuff. Boot gaiters seal out snow, and two hand pockets and a zippered thigh pocket keep your phone and a few chairlift chip snacks close at hand.

  • Don these ski-specific pants for a day on the slopes
  • Three-layer shell is waterproof and breathable (10K)
  • Fully taped seams prevent moisture from seeping through
  • Inner thigh zips vent heat after back-to-back laps
  • Regular fit with adjustable waist tabs

Nice but baggy

These fit well, are well constructed, and the zippered vents are effective. They fit a lot of features for the price. The only downside is they are a bit baggier than expected. They fit well at the waist but are baggy in the leg, even by snowboard standards.

    I used it twice

    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: medium

I used this product twice and it was solid, but I didn't particularly like the fit. It was kind of a baggy fit. I am typically a 31 inch waist but had to use the adjustable Velcro hip belt to tighten it all the way to make it fit properly. (I was using a size medium) I think the Item preformed very well for opening day conditions at snowbird. It was plenty warm with a base layer underneath, but I didn't get a chance to try it in blower conditions, or in any kind of inclimate weather. I would say this ins't a pair or snow pants for the seasoned veteran that puts in 50 or more days a year on the slops. But this is an excellent price point and a good quality pant for the casual snowshoe or someone that only makes it out 10-20 times a year.

    These babies are money!

These babies are money, and the color almost looks like money. Back in the day tobacco was cash crop, so if you get the tobacco color, it's almost literally like money too!

      Great function and quality

      • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
      • Fit: True to size

I bought these pants as a gift for a friend who took a birthday snowboarding trip to Austria. He hasn't upgraded his gear since we went to college together 10 years ago, so I was determined to show him how far outdoor clothing tech has come. He wears a size medium in everything and this was no exception. He's very happy with the quality and style of the pants, and is stoked to no longer be absorbing snow thru his pants while riding.

      Get some style, brutha!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: m

I decided I needed some buckskin color pants and looked for a long time before I found these. I really dig them... they're great looking and really waterproof. Indeed run a bit large and they're on the baggy side but not so much that I feel like I should have longer hair and ride a snowboard. BC house brand equipment has always been really solid in my experience.

      Super solid

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: Large

These pants are pretty solid, as you may have gathered from the title. So, lets break this down:

-Waterproof as heck. I have skied in the rain with these puppies, and they have to get my legs wet.
-They are super durable. I got these are the beginning of the ski season, and have yet had to have any sort of problem with them. All the zippers, straps, and boot gaiters are all still working like a dream.
-Breathable. On hot spring laps, these things let out the heat and sweat like something fierce. And with the inner leg zips as well, it makes it even better for skiing on those hot days.

-They run large. I am a pretty big guy, at 6'3 and 200 lbs with a 34 inch waist. Despite that however, I still have to do up the waist straps all the way AND wear a belt in order to not have them drop around my ankles while skiing, and that is only with a large size.
-They are already dirty. I bought Tobacco color, and I am already starting to see dirt patches on them. Nothing major mind you, but kinda annoying. I should probably stop hitting trees or something.

Finals thoughts: This is a great pant at this price point, and despite a couple minor flaws, it is still pretty amazing. If you need a pant, and have a couple hundred bucks, these should definitely be apart of your consideration.

      Super solid

Nice pants but not particularly durable

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium

I bought these as my snowsports school requires us to have black pants to teach in but we have to buy our own equipment. Let's start off with the good.

      - Very nice looking pants, they feel very high quality and have a nice quality to the fabric texture. Hard to describe but it makes sense in person.

      - Excellent waterproofness. 3-layer waterproof fabric, fully taped seams, sealed zippers. Not too much to complain about here.

      - Great fit, I'm 5'11" and generally wear a size 32 pant and the medium feels like it was pretty much tailored for me once the little elastic fastener is tightened.

      - Price is really reasonable for what you're getting, especially if you get these on sale.

      Now for the bad:

      - While they're waterproof, they wet out super easily. I'm not sure why it is, but they seem to wet out pretty much any time you get more than a light drizzle. I've tried cleaning them with Nikwax Techwash and refreshing the DWR coating but no success, the just don't seem to be able to shed water anywhere near as well as my normal Powslayer (Goretex Pro) bibs. Again, they maintain waterproofness without issue, it's just that they loose breathability much sooner than an actual Gore-Tex piece.

      - After a single season of use and a very short season at that, they're already falling apart. The velcro on the waist cinching strap in coming undone, there are lots of little cuts/holes near the bottoms, and the face fabric around the zippers is peeling off.

      - No built in suspender straps. Something of a minor complaint but these are high-end enough that there should be some provision for attaching suspenders without having to have something bite into the waistband.

      Look and fit are perfect

      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Large

These pants are lightweight and very soft which makes them super comfy to wear. I am 6'1" and 195 lbs and the size Large fit me exactly the way I want. Loose enough to fit a pair of fleece pants underneath, yet not overly baggy when wearing compression pants underneath. I like the zipper cargo pocket which is great for carrying my wallet on the slopes, and the front snaps have velcro integrated into them to keep the waist securely fastened. Really well designed for the price.

      Solid Ski Pants

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium

The pants fit really well ( I wear 32" pants normally) and they are a nice lightweight material that's pretty dang comfortable. If you're looking for a really slim fit, these aren't for you. But they give you really good range of motion. The best part about them is how waterproof they are. I have never had pants that kept me dry for that long in slushy conditions.

      Great Pant!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size

I gave these as a gift and the recipient couldn't be happier. Here is his review... "The basin and Range pants are great. The taped seams keep me dry and the pocket placements are on point. Fits true to size."

      Bell Bottoms

I am 5'10" and weigh about 175 lbs and ordered a M. The fit around the waist was great. They were more lengthy than I wanted which made them a bit baggy. This was all ok. The one thing that made me return them was the extremely flared bottoms. They covered the majority of the top of my ski boot and looked a bit funny. They seemed very well made, felt like they would have been warm with a light base layer, but without wearing them on the mountain, I cannot say for certain how warm.

        Run huge

The quality of the material and the design look nice, but these pants run freaking huge! I'm 5'10, 175 with a 33 inch waist and I was swimming in a medium. I'm not sure who these are supposed to fit but not a regular sized dude like me.

          Really Solid Function and Fit

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times
          • Fit: True to size

I was looking for a new pair of ski pants, mainly for resort skiing. They are very waterproof and the fit is great, long and tailored, but relaxed. With the softshell fabric, this makes them REALLY comfy. I don't know how often I will use the crotch vents but they will probably be really handy for Bluebird Spring days.

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
          • Fit: True to size
          • Size Bought: Small

These pants work great, they've kept me dry as a bone through deep days, slushy wet days, rain, and more. I really like the construction, durable and functional. Plenty of pocket space for the essentials. Fit is great, not to tight not to baggy and fits well over boots and layers. I've take these out on snowshoeing trips as well and they work great, yet don't breath exceptionally well.

I wear a size 31 pant and with a lot of layers the small fits snug I've got the adjustable straps all the way loose on and every now and then pop the button... but wouldn't go up to med keep the layers tight and you should be good to go. I gave these 4 stars for the stiff feel of the fabric, I find that where the pants button tends to scrape my stomach if it touches the skin, the pants have broken in over time and hopefully this will easy up but for now they feel a bit boxy and ridged.

          All around great pant!

Runs a little large, great construction

          • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
          • Fit: Runs large
          • Size Bought: Large

UPDATE: I got the mediums and they are a little snug. I must be in between the medium and the large right now. I think once I lose another 5-10 pounds they'll fit pretty nicely and with the adjustment straps I'll be set if I continue to lose some weight.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: I just received my Basin and Range Empire 3L pants in size large and color black. I measure a true 36/37 (what I measure when I get measured by a tailor for dress pants) so I figure a large would be perfect. I'm coming from a pair of large Northface Freedom Insulated pant which are too big. They are listed as a relaxed fit whereas the Empire 3L pants are listed as a regular fit. I figured being right in the waist range on the sizing chart and the fact that I was going from a relaxed to a regular fit that these would be spot on for sizing.

Unfortunately, I tried them on and they are just a little better fitting than my large Northface Freedom Insulated pants. Even with the waist adjustment all the way in they are still pretty loose. Basically I have nowhere to go if I lose a bit of weight which I'm currently doing.

I've got the mediums on order now and will update when I get a chance to try them on. Hopefully they will be perfect.

Apart from that, based on first impressions they seems to be of really high quality for the price. I hope the mediums work out because they seem like an awesome pair of pants to use for skiing. Like someone else mentioned they sort of feel like a softshell which is awesome. More flexible and less crinkly than a harder shelled fabric. Inner tight venting could be longer and open up wider, but it's hard to compliant about that at this price. The 3 pockets seem perfect and well designed. The zippers appear to be of high quality. And the construction in general seems to be awesome. I can't wait to try the mediums and hopefully use them out on the mountain.

Will update when I have the mediums.

          2 days in..

          • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
          • Fit: True to size
          • Size Bought: Large

My initial impressions are that these rock.
Softshell feel with seemingly hardshell durability.
The pocket layout is awesome, low profile cargo pockets and lower set hand pockets so things don't bunch and can be accessed while sitting. The fit is similar to Flylow\Norrona. Wide and long legs, true to size waist.

The inner vents have a fine mesh to keep snow out Personally I don't like mesh cause it can get stuck. But these haven't yet!
The waist adjustments are kinda maxed out out of the box and don't do much that a belt can do better.
Very sleek styles and subtle logo gives them a nice look also. I don't think I've ever had a compliment on a pair of ski pants before today... Well besides that yellow one piece suit....

          How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Have someone measure from the center of the back neck down the arm, with arm slightly bent, to the wrist bone.
Bend to the side and measure around the place where your waist bends, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Stand with feet together and measure around the fullest part of the hip.
