Love it

I got the XL because I have rather muscular arms and wanted to layer... (the large was too tight around the arms to fit a sweatshirt) I'm 5'7" and 150. It has been my favorite "go to" for a lot of different outfits. There are some itty bitty feathers that sometimes stick out, but that kind of thing doesn't bother me. It doesn't molt or anything. I have washed it and it's fine, I'm sure I'll get many years of wear out of it.

This is a great vest. Perfect for hiking and layering. This vest folds up so small and is so light that it's easy to pop in your backpack when you don't need the warmth. It layers great over the Basin and Range fleece as well as over smaller tops like long sleeve t-shirts or flannels. I'm looking forward to fall so I can wear this again. The fit is beautiful!!

I had my eye on this thing all winter long and was stoked to catch it on sale off season! It's in the 80s this week in Virginia though, so a proper review with some wear and tear might be a while...

Originally I was torn between a small or medium (34x28x36), but have otherwise learned lately that I'm usually better off sizing down with B&R. Aside from the armholes being a bit snug, the small is a perfect fit through the torso. That being said, if your extra layering needs take priority, I would probably size up, though personally I can't imagine wanting much more than merino or a flannel under this for casual use anyway. Also, I LOVE that they snuck the blue feather print on the inside lining of the black vest! It was so cute and tempting to pick but a little impractical for my wardrobe, so finding that detail when my order showed up was the best little surprise.

    Layer it

You can layer it over your ultralight Patagonia puffy, and you may even trick yourself into thinking it's a full-on jacket. That's the beauty of vests.

I love vests. I am a believer in vests. You've got the coverage to stay warm, but you're not fully committed to being trapped. You know what they say -- it's all about keeping your core warm.

I wear this vest with everything: over t-shirts, flannels, flannels and t-shirts, other jackets... you name it. It's super comfortable, and really keeps you warm.

Favorite feature: the high neck. I love keeping the wind off my neck!

    great but..

I love everything about this vest but the size. I got the jacket but this is a little bit big for a vest. I wish they could've made XXS for vests for #smallpeople

I've had this vest for almost two months now, and wear it every other day. Its a great layering piece, and goes well with flannels and sweatshirts underneath. Although vests are pretty boring functional pieces, the slim fit and soft fabric of this piece allows you to dress it up somewhat with a nice sweater underneath it. I've worn it twice skiing, once on a warmer day under my outer layer, and the second time on a really cold morning layered beneath a second, full-sleeved, down jacket. I hate wearing bulky layers just to stay warm, and this vest definitely delivers warmth without unnecessary bulk. Also, you can squish it down into almost nothing to save space while traveling. For comparison, this vest keeps me just as warm and maybe warmer than my north face denali fleece jacket when its 40-50 F outside, and it takes up 1/4 the space in my carryon!

This was a gift for my mother in law for Christmas. The fit was awesome and it looks great on her. She normally wears a MED in every jacket and the M fit her great. Its something she takes just about everywhere with her now.

This brand runs true to size. I gave this vest as a Christmas present to my girlfriend and she couldn’t be happier with the way that it fits. Plus she has room to layer underneath it. This vest is an awesome piece to any adventure-get-up and it looks good too!

Let me be the first to say it.....we are going to see some great things from Basin and Range! I'm so excited for this new brand, and have lived in this vest for the past two months.....here's what I found:

Style: I love vests--they really are so functional fall through spring, and even chilly summer nights in the mountains....but most of them are JUST functional. I've found myself wearing the Cottonwood Down Vest ALL the time.....it's not only functional, but it's cute too. It's got a slender fit, and it's warm without being overly bulky--I can throw it on over a flannel and don't feel like a lumberjack.

Size: Perfect. I'm 5'4" 112lbs and the XS is the perfect fit.

Function: It's great for hiking around when you need an extra layer, but you know you'll be working up a sweat so you don't want an entire jacket on. It keeps the wind off off your core for running errands around town. It layers great under a coat when temperatures really drop--and doesn't add bulk. It really adds the perfect amount of warmth, and packs up so small you can take it with you anywhere. There are two outside zippered pockets, and two internal pockets as well. A draw string around the bottom can be cinched up tight if you're wearing it as a base layer and need to keep the snow out. The arm holes are the perfect size, and allow for full range of motion for all your favorite activities.

Quality: This vest is silky smooth--so soft and squishy! I've worn it hiking several times and the fabric has held up perfect--no snags at all. I do hope B&R ups their zipper game just a bit. I like a heavy duty zipper that I don't have to worry about jamming--I feel like the pockets get stuck more often than I'd like.

This has quickly become on of my favorite pieces to wear day after day. So far I've loved my Basin and Range gear, and I can't wait to see what they'll come up with next.

        So warm!!!

I love this. Being short and average build, I've stayed away from quilted coats because I feel like the Michelin man. This is quilted so still stylish but it's not bulky and it's actually form fitting . Super warm too.

Really cute - but a little small.

        • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
        • Fit: Runs small
        • Size Bought: m

I'm 5'8 and about 150 lbs. I have broader shoulders, and ordered the M. It was a little too tight to comfortably layer a sweatshirt underneath, so I unfortunately have to return it. The feather pattern on the inside of the black vest is adorable - just not the right fit for me.

We had our family Christmas up at Priest Lake last weekend and I wore my new Basin and Range gear a lot - mostly because it makes me look skinny but ALSO in the name of thorough product testing.

A few of us took the little kids sledding and then for a long walk down the beach. The Cottonwood Vest was the perfect choice; I didn't sweat even though I was slightly hungover and towing kids uphill over and over....and over - holy crap where do they get the energy?

I also didn't freeze during our long and breezy walk. I didn't have to fiddle with it either; no zipping and unzipping - you might say the Cottonwood Down Vest is like a good ole Ronco Rotisserie, you just Set it and Forget it!

All kidding aside, I'm really impressed with Cottonwood Vest, it performs well and I like the way I look wearing it.

The arm holes are perfect, they're close-fit without being restrictive. I have big arms so I reckon the fit would work for most folks. Perhaps the best compliment I can give the arm holes is that I didn't notice them until I sat down to write this review.

The close fit is important, it doesn't just look nice, it allows the Cottonwood Vest to deliver warmth with very little weight or bulk. My size small weighs in at 7.2oz and disappears in a pack.

It has a drawcord hem, I've never cinched it up because it already fits closely, doesn't seem necessary. I appreciate that Basin and Range drawcords have a retention system which keeps them from hooking on the pocket clips of my knives, it also keeps them out of sight.

I could run on about the zipper for some time, I love it. The zipper is metal, quiet, and completely snag-free - believe me, if there was a way to get it hung up, I'd bloody well find it, zippers usually hate me. If you zip it all the way up, you won't feel cold metal on your lip because Basin and Range has thoughtfully included a zipper garage (hate it when companies don't do that).

The drop-in pockets on the inside are great and suitable for lots of different items - wallet, keys, cell phone, and even a handful of 2oz whiskey bottles (don't judge me - family Christmas).

I couldn't be more pleased. I wear the Cottonwood Vest to the office and around town a lot but it's also proven very capable recreating outdoors. It'll definitely be part of my summer backpacking kit; for only 3oz more, I'll probably take the Cottonwood Jacket for shoulder-season backpacking.

I can't recommend it highly enough, the Cottonwood Down Vest is spectacular!

I have long been in search of a flattering vest, that is also functional for these cold Colorado winters. The Cottonwood vest by the new Basin + Range is super stylish and with the 800 fill, does an excellent job of keeping me warm. The fabric is SO soft, I want the full jacket as well. I've had the best for about a month, so I'll breakdown the pros.

        PROS

Again, the outside fabric is so soft and smooth. I got the feather pattern which is so unique, I get tons of compliments. The bluish coloring is not as bright as in the photos, making the pattern more subtle and easy to pair with other shirts.

Even though this is 800-Fill it is surprisingly thin. I think the quilting pattern helps it stay sleek. This is really handy as this vest can be used as a great extra layer in town or skiing.

The fit: A-MAZING. I have a small frame, but a big chest which can be really hard to fit. I hate when clothes are really baggy just to fit the chest. Because this vest has an hour-glass cut, it is flattering for all bodies. I got a small, which is fits perfectly.

I don't have any negative comments about this vest, as I love it and where it everywhere! Give the new Basin and Range line a try, you won't be disappointed :)
