The Basin and Range Men's Cardiff Primaloft Insulated Vest will keep your core nice and toasty while you're in the mountains, without zapping your motivation to continue exploring further. Its Primaloft synthetic insulation maintains the ability to insulate even when it gets a little wet, and its polyester ripstop fabric is treated with a DWR finish for some added protection from the elements. Good Casual Wear

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Large

This is a good piece for casual wear but once you get active, it shows its limits. It does a great job for insulation for weather around the 30-50 degree range when paired with a flannel or long sleeve shirt. Primaloft always impresses me with how warm a thin and light product can be. As others have stated, it fits narrower in the midsection and more loose on the chest. I'm 5'11'' 210 with a larger muscular build and the narrow waist somewhat restricts motion when bending/twisting . So much so, that I occasionally have to unzip the vest for mobility. With that being said, it looks great and makes for a nice vest to wear around every day but not for heavy activity. Interesting side note: the zipper is on the left side as opposed to every other zip up I've had which has been on the right.

Great Layering piece

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs large

This vest has a rather boxy fit that I like for cruising around town, but not so much for the mountains. The materials are nice albeit thin, and the insulation is a good weight. I'd recommend this for a more stout man as the overall fit would compliment their larger frame better than a skinny guy.

Room for improvement

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Small

I've been on the hunt for a light to mid weight synthetic vest for casual wear and layering while climbing or touring, and picked up both a small and a medium in the Cardiff. Basin and Range currently doesn't offer a women's vest in synthetic materials, and I choose not to buy down items. I love the paneling and chest pocket on the vest, and the Primaloft insulation is really high quality.

Being fairly tall with an athletic build, I generally wear a lot of men's outdoor clothing in small or medium sizes. The fit of this vest is narrow waisted and broad shouldered, which seems to be typical of more alpine-style cuts currently on the market (think BD or Arc'teryx). Both the small and the medium were a great length for someone at my height, but the waist was far too tight to layer comfortably while the shoulders felt fine on both sizes. Perhaps not a great piece for gals looking to purchase a men's vest.

I wouldn't knock stars off a men's product for the way it fits on a woman, but I feel that the Cardiff Vest could be improved in other ways. The feel of the exterior fabric is somewhat papery and delicate, and not quite as soft or supple as similar models (*cough, Arc'teryx Atom, cough*). Side panels with a stretch fabric would facilitate better movement and breathability in the vest for high-output activities, as well. It may seem a bit innocuous, but I'd also prefer if the logo were a little bit more low-profile (the orange/red on the black fabric wasn't my fave). Alas, the hunt for the perfect synthetic vest continues!

Needs some work

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Medium

First off, the vest is a great price point piece! You won't find a 60g primaloft silver vest anywhere for the price. That being said, you get what you pay for, and I was kind of dissapointed with the Cardiff Vest. For comparison, I also own an Arc'teryx Atom LT Vest and Patagonia Nanopuff vest, and the Cardiff doesn't even come close. The only time I wear the vest is casually, as it doesn't have breathable side panels and the outer fabric doesn't seem super durable. As far as fit, I normally wear a medium in vests/jackets, but the medium was a tad snug on me, especially in the waist. If you want a casual piece, this is for you- if you plan on getting it done outside, look elsewhere.

Cardiff Primaloft Insulated Vest

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: XL

This is a great basic insulated vest at a decent price range. I bought it because I needed just a little more layering for the cold days of winter with my Atom AR jacket by Arc'teryx. The material is nice, and the 60g PrimaLoft Silver is top notch!!! I would have loved for the material to be a bit softer like my Atom Ar but still good quality for the price range. I didn't really dig the colors of the Bright Green and Taupe, so I just got black.

** Note: Zipper does get stuck sometimes or at least it does on mine.
