Backcountry x Smartwool PhD Superior Sock

After months of testing different socks on the skin track, Backcountry Gearheads decided on the perfect combination of durability, breathability, odor-resistance, and comfort to create the Backcountry x Smartwool PhD Superior Sock. Constructed from naturally odor-resistant Merino wool with mesh zones to promote maximum breathability, this lightweight, backcountry-ready sock features extra cushioning on the heel to reduce friction in the boot and low-profile shin cushioning for protection on the downhill. Two different elastics provide a no-slip performance fit, with more durable yarn in the high-wear zones for better longevity.

  • Ultra-light sock for long days in the backcountry
  • Merino wool is naturally odor-resistant for all-day freshness
  • Mapped mesh adds breathability to keep foot dry and warm
  • Heel cushioning ensures a snug in-boot fit for reduced friction
  • Low-profile shin cushioning is comfortable on the downhill
  • Toe is virtually seamless to reduce chafing
  • Gearhead Certified Product

A classic

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I’ve used the PHD light by Smartwool for years because of its thin/durable material. Keeps you warm while having the best power transmission to your boots. I was happy to see the BC collaboration

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I originally was lured to these socks, by the design. Turns out, I like the way they perform, too. They are thinner than I was expecting , which was a pleasant surprise .

The Backcountry sock

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love these socks. They are perfect for long trips through the backcountry. The padding is perfectly placed and will keep your heel protected while walking uphill. Also, these things look really cool!

Great Resort or Touring Sock

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The Backcountry X Smartwool socks are ultralight socks that have light padding where you need it -the heel and shins. They are really breathable, comfortable, and look great, too! These were developed by Gearheads and designed with features for backcountry skiing in mind, but are great for the resort, as well!

I love them and definitely recommend them.

Great Ski Socks!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These socks are really comfortable and keep my feet at a good temperature on any day above 10 degrees fahrenheit. If it's colder than that I use toe warmers in my snowboard boots and can ride all day in comfort.

Smartwool Quality with Backcountry Flair

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I absolutely love Smartwool products, they are incredibly durable and have far outlasted some socks I have from another sock company that is super trendy but wear out way too fast for the money. Bonus points for the collaboration between Backcountry.com and Smartwool on this PHD sock. This sock is thicker at the foot and thinner up the leg, like quite thin, but still warm. My boots fit pretty snug at the toes and these socks didn't affect fit negatively.
Very happy with these socks and will likely be buying another pair shortly.

Great ski sock

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Love this ski sock - it's pretty thin, which is my preference, and is great for long all-day tours.

Great sock

Smartwool has great ski socks. Highly recommend!

    High-Quality Sock

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Standard high-quality smartwool product, this sock doesn't add too much bulk inside of my ski boot. I'm glad i bought these.

    Classic Smartwool Quailty

As expected from Smartwool, these are comfortable, warm, and great quality. Add a Backcountry Goat and you've got the best sock available.

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Smartwool socks are the best and these high cut ski socks are perfect to make sure your boot doesn't rub against the skin. They aren't overly thick, which I prefer as I'm usually working up a sweat on the skin track anyway.

      Warmth without Bulk

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These are great socks that I use for both resort snowboarding and touring. They are a perfect weight, not bulky, but provide great warmth. They also breathe well during a long day on the skin track.

      Excellent Touring Sock

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These socks are lightweight and slim which is great when your boots are super tight. Merino wool is the best material for socks because it keeps your feet warm even if they get sweaty and it regulates well. Works great for touring and you won't even want to take them off for the drive home!

I ski in these all the time

Great sock, super comfy, and has kept my toes decently warm. I would recommend any day!

        Perfect touring sock

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These socks are great. They provide the perfect balance of cushioning and no cushioning in all the right places. The zero cushion on the sole of the foot is perfect for great contact with the sole of my boot and doesn't add bulk encouraging circulation and keeping my feet and toes warm. The cushioning around the ankle bone is perfect for keeping my heel locked in for strapping in and the descent. Lastly, the pattern is pretty sick with the mountains, goat, and Smartwool logo. These are my go to socks for tours, hut trips, and even resort skiing.

Reliable Ski Sock For All Weather

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These socks have totally been awesome this season. They have performed amazingly on all of my ski tours this season. They keep my feet perfectly warm but don't overheat

        Great gift for any skier!

        • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I bought these for my brother as a gift because of the great reviews and he loves them! He hasn't skied in them yet but I have a feeling that they'll be perfect. Great design and great sock! A BC X SW collab is all I ever wanted!

        Fit my needs perfectly!

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I'm not really an outdoorsy type, but I do commute by e-bike. E-Assist on in the cold early morning, then I get a workout on the way home by NOT using E-assist and taking a longer route home. My problem? Those cold early mornings. I'm headed to a well heated building at 15-18 MPH with dressy pants. When it's too cold, I'll throw on my rain pants for the trip and that keeps the cold wind off my legs. And when it's warm enough, I don't add anything. But there's a space in between where I'm reluctant to throw on the rain pants for an 8 minute trip, but if I don't, I get seriously chilled.

These socks bridge that gap! They're light enough that I don't overheat during the day in the well heated building, but heavy enough under slacks to keep the chill off for the ride to work.

Thin, Warm and comfortable. Absolutely love them!

          Great Sock

Perfect socks for winter and skiing. Thin but warm and comfortable, and I love the look. I bought more than one pair as it’s now my favorite ski sock!
