Backcountry x Flylow Grizzly Gulch Jacket

Every morning, Backcountry is represented by Gearheads touring all over the Wasatch in search of the snowiest stashes before work starts. Chances are good that, if you're on a dawn patrol in the same region, you're probably sharing a skin track with us. You might also share our opinions and preferences about ski gear, and our collaboration with Flylow Gear on the Backcountry x Flylow Grizzly Gulch Jacket indicates that you're in good company. Flylow solicited some design feedback from us, and we told them we wanted a jacket that’s reliably waterproof for the best powder days, ridiculously breathable to keep us comfortable while skinning under heavy snowfall, and ultra-lightweight to pack down small when dawn patrol gives way to a bright winter morning. They agreed that those are all important traits, and we think you will, too.

The Grizzly Gulch's thin, light, 3-layer construction includes a waterproof, air permeable Polartec Neoshell laminate—one of the few waterproof membranes that’s actually air permeable. Unlike standard breathable membranes, Polartec Neoshell starts to breathe the moment you put the shell on. Standard breathable membranes don't start breathing until after you work up a sweat, which can be detrimental when you're sweating on a skin track in freezing temperatures. The Grizzly Gulch Jacket doesn’t exactly eliminate all the sweat dripping down your face when you’re tackling steep skin tracks, but it does allow all that moisture to vaporize off your body so you don’t freeze and sweat at the same time. And as for the downhill, the Grizzly Gulch Jacket sheds all the powder shots and snowspray coming your way, so you feel comfortably dry and fresh for another lap.

  • Ski shell designed by Backcountry and Flylow Gear
  • Polartec Neoshell is reliably waterproof and air permeable
  • Ventilation zippers under each arm amplify airflow
  • Athletic fit with articulated design for free movement
  • Waterproof chest pockets are accessible with backpacks on
  • Helmet-compatible hood and adjustments at hem and cuffs solidify coverage

Great maneuverability

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

This jacket is amazing! I was able to move freely, without restriction, and never once got any snow where it shouldn't be! There aren't that many pockets on it, but I like the sleek slimmer fit look.

Super Slim Fit through the Sleeves

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

The circumference of the sleeves is really small for a large. The sizing is right, torso length, sleeve length, shoulder width. It barely fits over a long sleeve shirt and North Face Thermoball synthetic.
If I was in shape from climbing, I don't think it would go over my forearms.
Good if you only had a t-shirt on. And the hood is gigantic. I wish they would stop making them to fit OVER a helmet, who does that?

Great fit

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

The thing I like the most about this jacket is the fit. It's slender and not baggy but gives enough room for multiple layering options. It had held up well when the snow was falling hard as well as gives enough ventilation for the days which the sun comes out. This jacket has been completely waterproof and dependable and I would recommend it to others.

I didn't see it mentioned but thought I would ask anyways. Does this jacket have a powder skirt?

Hey Chau, This does not have a powder skirt. If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to reach out to myself or other gearheads.

Awesome shell

I like the fit of this jacket, the hood is compatible with helmets which is nice. It has enough pockets for everything I'm carrying when out on the mountain. I also like the color - I got the mustard gold and it looks exactly the same as in the photograph on the website

    Love it!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

I bought this as a gift for my brother and he loves it! "That jacket is warmer and lighter than I expected"

What is the proer way to clean this jacket? Thanks!

Ideally, washing a waterproof jacket is not all too recommended. However, if you do choose to wash it, please reference the FAQ's on PolarTec's website here:

    https://www.polartec.com/faq

Additionally, if you'd like to add secondary waterproofing treatments to your jacket, check out Nikwax here:

So close to the Perfect Touring Shell!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

First, I love this jacket and it performed very well through 6 days of BC touring in Hokkaido. The construction is kick-ass like most stuff from Flylow, so I was pumped that BC teamed up! I love the Neoshell fabric, it really breathes well and is stretchy, dry, and quiet. The fit of the Medium was spot-on for me as well. I tried a small and it was too tight in the shoulders/chest.

I do have a few gripes about the shell. As another reviewer said, the pit zips are really hard to raise and lower completely without the jacket moving around. Having a backpack waist belt on really helps hold the jacket in place for zipping the pits. My biggest problem with the jacket is the cuffs on the sleeves. They are super low profile and would work GREAT with a gauntlet style glove where the glove goes over the jacket. For us Jacket-over-glove people the cuff is way to tight, even when un-done to allow enough room for the gloves to fit easily inside the cuff, especially when wearing a watch. There's just not enough room and it makes it time consuming and a waste of time trying to get the cuff over the gloves. While it's certainly not a deal-breaker, I think this jacket would be the perfect BC touring jacket with larger cuffs and a removable powder skirt for bibless folks.

Overall, the construction, color, fit, and material are top-notch and I'll be keeping this jacket for a long time, but I might have to get MacGyver on these cuffs to help them fit over my gloves/watch.

    Lighweight and comfortable

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: L

This is a do it all lightweight shell. It's perfect for anything from touring to casual wear when you need weather protection. It's really thing but feels durable, slightly stretchy, and the fit is great.

    Solid and dependable

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Size Bought: medium

Solid and dependable. Comfortable and lightweight. These are the terms I would use to describe this jacket. I wore this to tour and it ticked all the boxes on the awesome checklist. I am 5'4, 160lbs and this fit me perfectly.

Kept me comfortable and protected during a blizzard while out riding. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a great Touring shell

How waterproof is this jacket compared to a goretex shell?

Hey Aidan, Polartec neo-shell has a waterproof rating of 10K. They will be waterproof in most conditions - I've been in the women's version at the resort during a wet storm and stayed dry. Technically it's less waterproof than gore-tex but it is far, far more breathable.

    Solid touring shell

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

An awesome shell that breathes well on the uphill and will hold up thru almost anything you'll put it thru. Might want something burlier for the resort, but this shell is perfect for dawn patrols.

    Great functionality

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

Ideal touring shell, extremely durable and exactly what you want in the Backcountry without breaking the bank. My one complaint is that the pockets are pretty high, making it a little awkward when you need to reach for items.

    Staying comfortable

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: M

I purchased this jacket for backcountry skiing only to find the athletic fit is a little to slim for me, It pulls tight under the arms and does not leave enough room for wearing an insulated jacket in the sleeves. Another aspect is the pocket zips and the draw cords for the hem and hood are not large enough when trying to adjust with heavy gloves at 11200 feet and the wind is blowing 30 Knots. Then there is the fact that closing the underarm vents by yourself is almost impossible. Other than all that it is a nice jacket

    Well balanced touring piece

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

This is a quintessential shell for backcountry exploration. Good weight, breathability, and ventilation. Looking forward to spending more time in this shell to see how it holds up long term.

    Perfect for touring

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: large

I use this jacket when I split board, snowshoe, or hike with microspikes. It is breathable for the tour up if it is windy, if it isn't windy I usually just stuff it into my backpack until the ride down. It is super lightweight and packs down very small. I get hot super fast though touring up. It is super waterproof and will stay dry even after a day of deep powder. I got a size large because I usually wear it over other layers. It fits me great.

    Flylow +Backcountry = Awesome

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

I am a big proponent of Flylow gear and was really excited when Backcountry decided to partner with them for this launch. I borrowed one of these guys to check out the new line in comparison to my current Flylow kit (higgins jacket/baker bibs) and to no surprise I loved this jacket just as much. The fit is great, the weight works well as either a lightweight inbound shell or midweight touring shell and the color choices work well with a lot of other options out on the market. I like the high pockets for integration with a harness and the Polartech Neoshell is really breathable when active. If you are considering a multipurpose shell for backcountry and inbound use make sure to add this jacket in the list of options.

    Great ski shell

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

This shell is awesome! It sheds snow and water off like nothing. I'm usually not a fan of yellow but the Mustard Gold color looks slick and great. The shell is light but durable

The fit is tapered but still roomy enough for layering for those frigid days. The higher pockets are something i really enjoy in this jacket. It's great for storing some trail mix or other snacks. The pit zips help release the heat when things start to get too toasty in the jacket.

I'm 6'0 145lb and this jacket fit perfectly!
