Why We Built The Thistle Down Jacket

We love winter. Fresh snow, holiday markets, cheerful festivities with our families. But it can get pretty darn cold out there. Thankfully we're bundled up in our Thistle Down Jacket before we leave the house. This casual puffy isn't shy when it comes to dishing out warmth. We packed it full of soft, lightweight goose down, keeping us snug as a bug while we roam city streets or chill at camp with our buddies.

  • A casual down jacketfor frigid winter days
  • Water-repellent finish sheds light dirt and moisture
  • Down insulation provides lightweight, toasty warmth
  • Durable hood brim keeps its shape to shed light snow
  • Internal microfleece chin guard won't irritate the face
  • Fitted cuffs and adjustable hem prevent loss of heat
  • Fits true to size; falls at mid-hip level

I'm so undecided on this one

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: M

Just received my size M and I'm swimming in it. Thinking about exchanging for a small. Not sure if it will end up being a bit short as the M is hitting the hip okay but huge everywhere else. Width size I'm almost thinking an XS would work but I've never met an XS that is long enough for my arms.

Other than sizing, I'm also torn on the look. It's a matte color which looks cool. There's nothing too special about it other than that. Feels warm and fluffy but no bells and whistles. The pockets zip. The main zipper was snagging on my initial try on but maybe just needs a little wearing in or getting used to. The pockets are unlined... I'm realizing I really liked the lining on the pockets of my old puffy.

Overall, seems okay for the price, which was sale at around $90. I would never pay full price on this one.

Update: an XS ended up fitting me best. 5'8 130 lbs pants size 4, 34b bust

Sizing Guide

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: small

Hi, this is Emily and I work on the Backcountry brand product development team. I am writing this review today to help guide your sizing decision on this new product. My measurements are: 5'4" Tall Size 4, or on the larger size of S in bottoms The larger side of S for tops bust 34 B. The Thistle Jacket is a great winter go to, it is super warm and goes anywhere you want it to. I wear a S in this jacket and it fits me well. The length of the jacket is slightly abbreviated and hits the wearer right at the center of the hip. This makes wearing a harness for belay easy, or simply a more stylish silhouette.

I'm interested in this jacket. I'm super petite... 5'0", 95lbs.... can you suggest the XS or the XXS? I wear an XS in Artery'x Atom LT, and an XS in Patagonia sweater which fit me well. But I've noticed often XS jackets are still a little big on me in a lot of brands.

How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Have someone measure from the center of the back neck down the arm, with arm slightly bent, to the wrist bone.
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Measure from the crotch to the floor with no shoes.
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
