Why We Built The Rustler Gore-Tex Stretch Jacket

With the Rustler Jacket, we set out to achieve the pinnacle piece for all-weather protection, equally at home earning turns or riding free refills at the resort. We gave it powerful Gore-Tex protection to keep us dry on the deepest days, and articulated, stretchy construction to make every slash of powder effortless. For those longer days exploring away from the lifts, we graced the Rustler with a chest pocket large enough for a radio, and a unique design that includes a secondary zip at the neck for hood expansion and additional venting. And, not to leave any stone unturned, we insulated the phone pocket so that we'll always have a soundtrack for the ride down.

  • A lightweight hardshell designed for ski touring or resort wear
  • Gore-Tex delivers waterproof, breathable performance in wet snow
  • Stretch construction ensures full mobility on the slopes
  • Snow skirt and adjustable hood and cuffs seal out wind and snow
  • Stowable thumb loops can slip over your gloves to secure sleeves
  • Hand pockets are placed for access even with pack or harness on
  • Sleeve pocket includes an interior card slot to secure your pass
  • YKK Aquaguard zips prevent any moisture from slipping through

Great resort jacket, bulky touring coat

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: M

This is a sweet coat. Solid construction, and I personally thought the fit was fine: yes long arms but thats a plus for me, a little extra fabric in chest but not dramatic, coat still looks great on. A medium fit over my shoulders and butt fine (my shoulders 19", hips 39"). If I was going to use it primarily at the resort and sometimes backcountry it would have been perfect. Unfortunately, I was looking for a coat to use touring and occasionally at the resort. For touring it feels a little bulky due to its thick, durable fabric and long fit. It does not pack down very small.

Lots of things going on. I love the mask feature, but I would like the choice of not having it over my face.

Odd fit

  • Size Bought: S

I wanted this jacket to work b/c it seemed well constructed with nice fabric, but the arms were too long (and weirdly baggy in your upper arm) and just overall didn’t have a great fit. Hopefully Backcountry can improve upon this in future iterations!

Odd It

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: Large

Love all the specs of the jacket.
However odd fit:
Arms too long, and big in shoulders.

Fit is ok in the mid torso and hips.

Feel sad that it didn’t fit.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The Rustler jacket covers the basics and has several key features that sets it apart from other touring shells. There are asymmetrical zippers that open the collar for a comfort fit with the added bonus of laser cut holes for venting. I also there are small hidden MAGNETS so you can pull the collar off your face and secure it to the side. That being said, the collar is lined with a softer material so it still feels comfortable when you're all zipped up.

Along with the usual pockets, there is a very handy side arm pocket that holds small items like snacks, chapstick, and lift passes. Easy to access and out of the way.

Personally, I really enjoy longer jackets partially for aesthetic, but also for functional use as it keeps you well protected from the elements. The longer length, plus the gore-tex, makes this jacket super durable and dry. I've brought it through some tight and gnarly trees and bushes on touring descents and to my surprise I didn't find a single tear.

I agree with other comments that the arms seem to be a big long in length, but that hasn't bothered me at all. I don't find it gets in the way on tours or downhill skiing, and actually helps keep snow from sneaking into that space between cuff and glove. My only real complaint is that sometimes I think I'm grabbing the venting zipper when I actually am grabbing that upper chest pocket zipper (and vice versa). They're quite close together so it's easy to mistake the two if you're not looking.

I can’t figure out how to secure the magnets to the side. I see the magnet in the collar but where are the attaching magnets located?

Women’s ski jacket

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: M

I have been looking for a good all terrain women’s fit ski jacket. I was really hoping some of the reviews were wrong. But I found the same problem with the jacket; sleeves oddly long, too tight at the shoulders, baggy in the body and tight at the bottom. I could hardly move my shoulder when I put it on. Very unfortunate but there is no way I was able to move/ski freely in this jacket. I am returning it ASAP.

Runs really small

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Medium

I have hips and a muscular back and shoulders and I am basically a medium in everything. Before I even slipped this jack on all the way I knew it was definitely too small. It definitely fit me like an XS and I am quite disappointed because the jack itself would be amazing if the sizing wasn't so off.

LOVE it!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: XS

Recently purchased this jacket and it has been a game changer! Gore-Tex and wind breaking features really live up to their expectations and have kept me dry and warm on even really cold days! I really like the way it fits and love all the extra features (i.e. the asymmetrical zippers, the thumb loops, and the extra ventilation on the collar), which are what sold me on it I’m the first place. My ONLY complaint is that the sleeves are fairly narrow which makes it hard to fit gloves inside, but I did purchase the XS so bigger sizes might not have this problem. I could also buy different gloves that fit inside or are made to go over sleeves. Over all, I love the jacket and highly recommend it. It has a great fit and it is exactly as advertised!

GREAT Color!!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I love this jacket. It fits really well and works great with backcountry skiing and resort skiing. I ordered a size M. The Darkest Spruce is a beautiful color. So far I have zero complaints!!

Great colors, horrible fit

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small

Giving one star because the colors and price are great. I ordered this in two sizes because the color I wanted wasn't available in Medium so I figured I'd try S & M in a different color, knowing the S would be wishful thinking based on other reviews. I tried the M first and knew right away the jacket is NOT designed for someone with a bust (and if you refer to their model and the fit video, I should have known better - no curves whatsoever). It was super tight through the bust and shoulder / upper arms. I'm a 34G but otherwise, I typically fit a small or medium - I have Patagonia & Norrona all in S or M. The jacket was also really stiff - I know that's due to the Gore-tex but it felt more stiff than other gore-tex jackets. Total bummer that Backcountry hasn't designed a better fitting jacket because their colors and price are on point.

Always appreciate when somebody comments how things fit curvy/busty bodies. Thank you!

Great jacket, weird fit.

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs large

This jacket’s features and style are awesome. If it weren’t for the strange fit I would have been in love.
I’m a 32DDD. The medium jacket was baggy in the top, tight in the hips, and the arms were so long they were past my finger tips. Like one reviewer said, it bunched funny under my arms and was uncomfortable due to the excess material. I tried a small hoping it would be shorter and it was not. However it fit great on the top half. If I bunched it up over my butt it would work fine, but It’s just too much money to spend on something that fits so poorly. I wish backcountry would be able to provide garment measurements, or a more accurate size chart.

Eat your zippers, no more!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

My favorite thing about this jacket is that the zipper is off center. I love when it's cold, and I hunker on down into the neck of the jacket that there's not a zipper right there, acting like a snack. Excellent shell, keeps me dry in all sorts of weather. Other people have noted that the sleeves are long, but I really like that part of the fit. The pockets are great, I especially like the higher sleeve pass pocket. There are two things that I would change if I could though. First, I would add wrist gaiters. Who doesn't love the ability to help keep snow out of your sleeves? Second, I'm a snowboarder and I ride regular, so when I'm trying to vent myself on a warmer day, with the way the zippers are set up, this flaps right back in my face and doesn't stay open. If I was goofy, I'd be golden. Literally the only two things I would change on it though!

Eat your zippers, no more!

Near Perfect Ski Jacket

  • Fit: True to size

An all-around great ski jacket. Love the neckline. Sleeves are slightly long, otherwise it would be a five star jacket. Highly recommend.

Weird fit in chest and armpits

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Large

based on the description and some of the reviews I was really excited for this jacket. However, the fit was WAY off for me. I am consistently a size M (8) shirt (34DD) and 10 pants and have size M or L jackets based on their purpose.
I tried a large so I could layer underneath. It fit over my hips, which is usually the trouble spot for me with jackets so I didn't expect this to be so snug through the armpits and chest. The fabric, detailing, pockets and length are all great but there is no way I could wear this. I tried it with a long sleeve T and there is no way I'd be able to layer as it was close to impossible for me to move my arms around. The top (shoulder chest area) felt like a size S and the bottom ( waist through hip) of the jacket was true to size.

Solid jacket lots of design detail

I decided to try this jacket out with all of the effort and thoughtfulness that Backcountry put into the design. I’m happy to say it was the right decision for me! I just got back from skiing in Canada . This jacket kept me warm and dry for the entire trip! I love the hood that zips over the helmet, phone pocket, vent for the high zip(no goggle fog here), and long length of the jacket! The fit is flattering and loose enough to add a base layer and puffy underneath for extra insulation. I have wide hips & shoulders and this jacket accommodates that as well as my long torso. The only con Ive come across so far is that its hard to turn your head when the hood is up over the helmet and you have to unzip the coat to pull the hood down. I would hands down purchase this coat again. I am looking forward to taking it backcountry skiing over this next season!

Warm and dry!

I'm a relatively new skier with an endless love for deep pow, but without the skills to get down steeper runs without falling. Does this stop me from trying? No. Does this mean I need a burly jacket with the features to keep me dry while I dig myself out of waist deep snow? Yes.
This jacket is warm, soft inside, and has all the functionality and amazing material that someone with my ski style demands.

Soft brushed interior is WARM
Vented neck and pit zips help cool you down when it's too warm
Stretch GORE-TEX fabric is waterproof and comfortable to wear
Plenty of pockets and storage
Long length fits well around my hips, looks awesome, and feels great

The overall fit seems to run really small, but the arms are long and super roomy, which feels a little strange on. I didn't notice once I started moving
I had trouble taking the hood on and off over my helmet without unzipping the jacket. Not sure if this is possible with other jackets or not, but I wish it was easier.
The powder skirt didn't fit as tight as previous jacket's I've worn, and slipped up during a few falls

How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Have someone measure from the center of the back neck down the arm, with arm slightly bent, to the wrist bone.
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Measure from the crotch to the floor with no shoes.
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
