Weird but high quality

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

The flexible Gore-tex material is awesome, I don't have another jacket this waterproof, that is also this light and packable. I understand the opposite facing pockets for when wearing a pack, but still weird not having normal hand pockets, or any internal pocket. If it fits you, it a good deal, but it is a bit of a weird design.

Poorly Designed Arms

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

The arms are tighter than regular jackets, not a big deal, but specifically the pocket on the left arm sucks. It's outer edge is stiff, and with how the jacket arms ride up, the stiff edge ends up right in the crook of my elbow, in a very uncomfortable spot. Would return if I could, will not buy again.

Almost good

Familiarity:

I tried both the medium and large and couldn’t get past the weird arm fit. The material is great and pockets seem perfect for a harness or backpack/airbag but the arms make this jacket basically unusable. The arms are extremely narrow (way smaller than even an outdoor research trim fit) and the angle just doesn’t work for anything other than arms at side. I really wanted to like this jacket.

Arm fit is weird. Very very weird

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

The arms join the body of the jacket at a really shallow angle in comparison with other active jackets. The arm joins at around a 45 degree angle which means any arm movement above that natural angle will lift the jacket hem and cuffs potentially exposing skin while limiting freedom of movement. See the photo comparing natural arm angles of the Notchtop (red) with a shell from Rab (yellow). The Rab arms join perpendicular to the body with extra material below the arm which allows the wearer to reach overhead. The Notchtop joins low and shallow preventing movement approaching shoulder level. If you want to reach overhead, your hard shell is now a crop top. Love the materials and venting features but the fit really bums me out.

Good touring shell but weird shoulder fit

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

Remember this is a lighter touring shell so it has minimal accoutrements. No inner liner, no real pockets. I think the Backcountry stuff is well built, I use their Cottonwoods bibs. But this shell had a major flaw for my body which is a constrictive fit behind the armpits, which cause the sleeves to feel way too short. Just a flawed back pattern or perhaps meant for skinnier bodies, but it felt uncomfortable and wasn't for me.

Really wanted to like it

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

Was looking for a goretex shell to upgrade my beaten up gear. This was a great deal and i snagged it. Bought a size larger expecting a little room. While the general fit is perfect, and exactly what I wanted, what does not work is any sort of arm movement. Any time I raise my arm the jacket starts riding up. At shoulder height it does not even cover my navel. If I raise my arms any higher it might as well be a sports bra. There is something very wrong with the tailoring. It looks and feels great when standing still. Any movement exposes its flaws. Compared the way it moves with my other shells and this one just does not work for any activity. You look and feel great standing still though... so i guess thats a plus. Post purchase, found an online review that said something very similar. I R DISAPOINT

Great Shell, Needs a few upgrades

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought this jacket to use snowmobiling b/c snowmobile gear is stuck in 1975. Here are my thoughts after two days riding: Pros: - No noticeable difference between the goretex active and standard. No water getting through. - The stretch is great. Much more mobile. - Surprisingly warm for a shell. There is not an ounce of insulation but the fabric seals well. I stayed warm with a fleece and under armour top underneath. It was 8 degrees on day 2. - Huge hood would definitely slide over a ski helmet. - I actually like the fit. Yes it is shorter in the arms, but that?s great for a shorter guy like me. I would call it an ?athletic? fit which is frankly what I want. It might be slightly short on taller individuals. It?s definitely not ?fat? as others have posted. Cons: - No powder skirt. The one time I could have gotten wet would have been when digging out. Snow would come freely right up into my abdominal area. Needs the skirt to be a true snow/ski jacket. - No pockets. You can use some of the venting on the front as a pocket if needed, but kind of stunned there isn?t a true pocket anywhere on the coat. Frustrating to me, especially on a day that I wouldn?t be carrying a pack (not often but every once in a while). Those 2 improvements would change it to a 5 star. It?s a great water proof shell that moves with you as well as anything I?ve worn.

Top Notch Notchtop!

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I tend to overheat on the ascent and so was very pleasantly surprised to arrive at the top of a moderate to hard 1-hour skin dry and just comfortably warm. Of course I made full use of the many, great venting options. Fit was perfect for me but I do have a negative ape index. Closed up all the vents and had a nice, warm ride down. This has become a go-to layer for me this season.

Great feel, bad fit

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

I never had a chance to actually use it because it is sized for short and fat. I'm 6'4" and 235lbs, with an athletic build. The torso fits really nicely and there is plenty of space for movement. The arms however are really short - they are almost 3" too short. When I put my gloves on (over jacket cuff) and straighten out my arms, I end up with 2" of exposed skin. When I put the hood on over my helmet and zip up, I cannot turn my head at all; it's super tight. The material feel is really nice. It's quiet and as a soft-shell, really pliable. I really wish that it had fit well because I would have kept it. I had ordered multiple jackets and was able to try it back to back with a Flylow Quantum Pro, Arc'teryx Sabre, and Norrona Lofoten Pro Plus. Yes I know these other jackets are hard-shells, but I was looking at a range of jackets and hoping that this jacket could cover my needs, assuming it would fit. It unfortunately had by far, the most fit issues. The Flylow has the same sleeve length issues as the Cottonwoods. I ended up with the Arc'teryx because it doesn't have the sleeve length issues. It was quieter than the Arc'teryx, but fit wins. If you're not at the extreme end of size, it would probably be fine, but the arms are definitely short.
