Dead Tree Zip-Off Insulated Knickers

Mid-layers are a necessity for backcountry skiing, but Backcountry Gearheads wanted to up the game a notch by designing a mid-layer to provide extra warmth on the coldest tours of the season. Part of Backcountry's touring collection, the Women's Dead Tree Zip-Off Knickers offer lightweight synthetic insulation wrapped in a water-resistant face fabric that's breathable enough to layer for frigid ascents and designed in conjunction with the Backcountry x Flylow Patsey Marley Bib Pants.

Top-to-bottom zippers mean the knickers can be easily removed if things get too toasty, or quickly thrown on if a mild tour turns unexpectedly cold at the summit. All the zipper pulls are glove-friendly to keep transitions fast, and an adjustable shock-cord waist ensures the knickers stay securely in place underneath our shells.

  • Insulated knickers to keep legs toasty on frigid summits
  • Synthetic insulation traps body heat for reliable warmth
  • Top-to-bottom size zippers make on and off easy
  • Zipper pulls are glove-friendly for fumble-free transitions
  • Water-resistant fabric prevents moisture from soaking baselayer
  • Shock-cord waist and stretch fabric ensure fit and ease of motion
  • Gearhead Certified Product

Love 'em - but odd fit

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Size Bought: Large

Great concept and I love that they zip on and off. The only issue is that they seem to gap at the waist - and the draw string doesn't do a ton to combat that. That said, they're comfy, warm and good quality. They held up as a midlayer on some cold days of resort skiing, and I'm thrilled to have found them. Good quality, but probably not worth paying full price. On sale - very worth it.

Love these!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

I purchased these for winter camping and fitting under shell pants for skiing and mountaineering. I absolutely love the fit and extra warmth these provide. The length is perfect, in my opinion. I’m not sure I agree that these run small though. I’m 5’3 and around 118 lbs with muscular legs. I’m typically a size small or XS, depending on the brand. After reading the reviews on here, I ordered a size small. Although they’ll work for me, I think I would’ve preferred an XS.

Warm, but runs a little small

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small

I bought these for my sister-in-law who skis with Arcteryx shell pants and is frequently cold. She is typically an XS and wears these in XS; however, she says they do run a bit small. If you're in between sizes, I would definitely recommend sizing up. She has a 24" waist, for context. The zippers on the sides aren't the best quality, and we had trouble getting them to fully unzip and re-zip. The pants themselves are super warm and fit nicely underneath her shell pants. They don't pack down for travel, but it's well worth it for the cost of these and the warm legs while skiing!

Too small, but I think they are cool

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: XL

The XL was too small to be of use during actual activity, but these are a great idea.

I was impressed with the amount of stretch built into them. That is not something I was expecting of a quilted and insulated layering piece. So kudos on that nice touch.

Also, even though they were too small overall, the general silhouette/cut seemed to be made well to be flattering for skiers with muscle in the thigh/hip/rear.

Would love to see a XXL version, or an update on the sizing so the XL actually fits a women's 16.

Super Warm, a little bulky

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

I bought these before heading on a ski trip to the Canadian Rockies where the temperatures were expected to get below -30C. I layered these under my shell pants for a few days on the slopes in these conditions and they kept me toasty warm.
They don't pack down super small which is a shame because I was considering taking these on future mountaineering trips where I could put them on at summit/camp.

Thanks for the review, Claire!

Does the job, but room for improvements

Was looking for a way to add warmth, as I predominately only ride or tour with shells even when its super cold out, and wearing a bunch of layers or taking off/adding long underwear leg layers during the day can be a real pain. For a recent trip in Canada, was so cold I had so many layers on I felt like the Stay Puff marshmallow man, which prompted this purchase. Have been looking at various solutions, including making my own (added some side zippers to some heavyweight leggings), but nothing was quite working right. So far, this is the best solution I have found! But, Backcountry.... I really wish you would make a few improvements:
    - Offer a shorter length option, I am 5'2" and have to fold up about 5 inches of pant length which is not ideal and it gets caught or pulled up over my knee
    - Please make these much more stretchy (at least in zones) and come up just a touch higher for waist rise
    - The pocket is pretty much useless, so could lose it
    - The snaps/zippers aren't the easiest, but seem to be pretty secure
Overall, would love to see some improvements, but so happy I purchased this. Will be editing mine to shorten them since that is quite a problem for me when I can dig out my sewing machine.

Bought these for really cold days. Great for layering. Works well with ski boots.

Crotch seam coming undone after 4 months

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: xs

I LOVE these pants. However, they were expensive to begin with and now I have to take them to my seamstress to fix the inner crotch seam that is starting to lose its stitching after just one season. Great concept, but perhaps needs some extra care with the construction if the purpose is to do outdoor activities in them

Hey Megan, sorry to hear this! I am going to send you an email to get a bit more information from you and see if there is something that we can do.

      Well thought out insulating layer

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium

I purchased these to wear on really cold shifts at my local hill. I'm impressed by the well thought out design, nice amount of insulation, length works well with boots, zip off allows me to easily add or drop this layer. Previous reviews said they run small, but I feel like they're pretty true. I ended up ordering my usual size and could wear them under a shell, or even zip them over my touring pants for a cold transition.

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: Large

Bought these for my ski trip last week to Mammoth. I have not seen snow like this in 40 years. I wear the Arcteryx shell jack and pants and knew I would need a little help to stay warm. With the wind chill it was 0 degrees. Best purchase I have made in a long time. The price was way better than the Arcteryx brand could not see spending $200.00. I am 5’10” 150 lbs. and purchased the size large. Only gripe I have, it could be a little longer through the crotch for taller skiers. Love them!

For wife's backcountry kit- loves it

Awesome layer under shell pants! So great to have a knicker that stays out of boots!

        Wife Loves Them

        • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
        • Size Bought: XS

I bought these for my wife at Christmas and she was excited for them. After wearing them a couple times skiing with two other base layers under them (she freezes while skiing) she said these are a game changer to keeping her warm. The design is pretty good, the few changes she says she would make are adding hand pockets on both sides and maybe pocket openings to lay a little smoother so they look more flattering. Overall worth the purchase.

Thanks as always, for your reviews, Brian. You're awesome!

        OH MY GREAT

        • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: XS

My first impression is that these are amazing and I can't believe I have gone this long without them. I love the capri length with skiing since you have boots on anyhow. They fit perfect for me and fit under my ski pants well. I imagine them to be perfect for resort riding and hanging around a hut backcountry skiing. I think they would be too toasty for uphill travel though. Of note, I have chicken legs. I notice the review below says the leg holes were too small for her muscular thighs. Might be something too consider.

        Well-designed light and warm midlayer

        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: xs

I got these yesterday and my first impression is great! They are a good design; perfect length for wearing with mountaineering boots or even xtratufs. The zip off nature of them is ideal for my world, where I frequently need to add or remove layers without removing my footwear or don't want to struggle with trying to pull pants off over big muddy boots. They are very lightweight and fitted, yet warm! In regards to fit; I read another review that left me nervous about the fit of these, but for my body type they are perfect. I am a very muscular 115 lbs and 5'6; the XS fit great. I have a straight vs curvy build, typically my struggle with pants is when the waist is too tight when buttoned but the rest of the pant fits nicely, or the waist fits but the rest of the pant is too baggy. The XS of these pants are a perfect fit, and extremely comfortable. Looking forward to throwing them on without having to take my shoes off when I'm working outside in AK this winter and the temperatures drop!

Any chance you mind sharing the weight of these?

        Arrived damaged, fits small

        • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
        • Fit: Runs small

I had high hopes for these knickers, but they arrived with a broken zipper pull and a zipper up one side that doesn't work (the slider can't move up all the teeth- I assume the teeth are incorrectly sewn).
I also found them to be pretty slim fitting- I'm very decidedly in the size small measurement ranges but the knickers are tight. My muscly skier thighs would bust right through these.
Great idea, poor execution, and very poor craftsmanship.

Hey Lisa! I'm sorry you received a pair that was incorrectly manufactured. Check your inbox for more details on how to send them back for free & getting you the right set up for this winter!

        How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Have someone measure from the center of the back neck down the arm, with arm slightly bent, to the wrist bone.
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Measure from the crotch to the floor with no shoes.
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
