Why We Built The Covert Liner Short

We built the Backcountry Cover Liners to make each and every one of our rides as comfortable as possible. Constructed from a stretchy material that's silky smooth, these shorts conform to your leg shape and interface nicely with your other layers without adding bulk. The low-profile chamois provides a cushion between you and your seat, ensuring you can ride longer without discomfort.

  • Liner shorts to stay comfy on your rides
  • Stretchy fabric conforms to your exact shape
  • Low-profile chamois provides cushion and comfort
  • Thicker fabric near the seat withstands friction
  • Side panels provide extra airflow
  • Leg grippers have a slim layer of silicone for security

so so so small

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: L

I really wanted to like these. I even reordered a larger size after my first order was laughably small. Then I was so sad after my next order was still way too small.

I think though, I was assuming "non-road cylcling fit" and should have been considering "road cycling fit." Road cycling fit tends to be extremely small to accommodate really small riders.

So while I'd normally fit into a M/L, I would need an XL or maybe even XXL in these.

They were also a lot longer than I'd expect (possibly even longer than my shorts I"d wear over) and really high waisted. Frightening muffin top there.

Awkward Sizing for Me

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: M

I was very excited to try these bike shorts and purchased my regular size Medium. However, I was disappointed when I tried these shorts on and realized they were way too tight over my hips, a bit snug on my thighs and waist, but a smidge loose at the leg opening. I was discouraged enough about the fit that I didn't try the size up-afraid the leg opening would be too loose and still have the shorts too snug in the hip. The shorts seem nice but I won't try again until they revise the fit. Some of the Backcountry bottoms seem inconsistent in sizing. I am very much a medium, would have needed a large in these, wear a medium in the Slickrock Bike Pant, and a small in the Pecos Water short.

Very Odd Sizing - Ideal for Pear Shapes

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: L

Unfortunately I cannot comment on the function of these liner shorts, as the sizing was way off. I am 5'9", 140lbs, hourglass figure that normally wears Size 6 or M in bottoms. My measurements are a little smaller than the following, as I have lost about 8lbs since recording these measurements: Waist 30 6/8 in, and Hips 42.5 in. Based on the reviews I decided to go with a size L.

Here's the thing. If these shorts were a little too big all-around, then I can happily return them and purchase the size M. However, the proportions on these liner shorts are way off. I could barely squeeze into these shorts at the waist/hip area (I have a big butt, I don't deny it), but eventually managed to get them on. The deal-breaker for me however was the thigh portion of these shorts. They were incredibly loose, and I don't have skinny thighs either! Needless to say I was shocked atnd disappointed at the odd sizing.

If you have a really tiny waist and bigger thighs, then these shorts could possibly work for you. I was really looking forward to these as they are high-waisted, but alas, my search for the perfect liner shorts continues.

Sweet but run small

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: L

I find all the backcountry brand clothes I have bought run small, I should have known. Initially got these in size M (my standard size) and they fit but they were too small in the waist. I have never liked things too tight on my stomach so I bought a size L. The L fits really nicely and it sits higher up, maybe a few inches above my belly button and feels really good. I love the mesh for breathability and the legs although are loser, they don’t effect my performance or bunch up. I did find around 45 miles into my ride my crotch got a little sore and shifted around a little but it was not excruciating and I pushed through. I love the black as I can wear them on their own and since I don’t have diaper butt I feel
Comfortable wearing them without over shorts.

Personally, I really like these shorts. I do have some chamois I prefer over these but I find these pretty close in comfort and all around function. The biggest plus for me is wearing just these on my ride and feeling comfortable in public!

Sweet but run small

Worked for me!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Xl

I have been on the hunt for a good pair of bike shorts. I ski all winter and mountain bike all summer so I have big quads. I also have a small waist and hips. Ever pair I'd tried gave me sausage legs or was huge in the waist.
I saw the reviews for these and ordered them immediately as it seemed like the other reviews complaints would mean a winning fit for me. After trying a few sizes I settled on the XL because they are tight in the waist for sure. They fit the thunder thighs great and are very comfortable on my waist!
I'm 5'6" weigh 155 and am usually an 8 or medium I'm bottoms.

I think that I look just like you, so your info is super helpful! Thanks!

Nice material but weird fit

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: M

I am 5'3 and 115 lbs and based on the reviews I ordered a size up and purchased a medium. These fit snugly on my waist, which I liked, but were way too loose on my lower thighs.

Comfortable, sleek, but runs small

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Medium

I really like this liners - this is my second season in these and I'm traditionally a medium bottom (5'3", 29 in waist, 135-140 lbs) and even though the medium Empire short were my jam, these were too tight in the waist and it caused the waistband to roll down while I was riding--not ideal. Fast forward to three months in quarantine, I'm down below 130 lbs and the waist fits perfectly now in the medium (while I've had to size down to a small in the Backcountry mountain bike shorts - Empire and Slickrock). I find the fit to be less 'diaperlike' than some other styles, I love the higher waist--stays put throughout rides, the material is great and keeps me from overheating on long, hot summer rides, and my favorite part - the elastic on the leg holes is a great fit and doesn't suffocate my athletic thighs!

Pretty Good

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: M

I bought this after researching extensively for an affordable pair of bike shorts for mountain biking. After reading over reviews, I ordered a Medium and it fits really well!
I like the breathability and where the seams hit on my body.
What I don't like? The chamois needs to be wider and thicker.
I held out to write this review until I knew for sure that I could blame the chamois for my soreness. However, after biking 200 this season so far and comparing with another set of Pearl Izumi bike shorts, I can confirm that the chamois on this pair are too thin for long rides.

RUNS SMALL

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: M

All the other reviews are right - SIZE UP! Although even with a larger size, I think I would struggle getting the waistband over my hips. So freakin' tight. Fits way too snug at the waistband (and it rolls down) and comfortably loose at the thighs. I really like the mesh on the legs for airflow, and the high waist, but the logo is really big and ugly. Unfortunately a return from me. I'm normally a 6/8 or 28/29 in pants and the medium suffocated me at the waist.

Not perfect, but it will do

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: XL

I was pretty excited to try these as they have a higher waistline than the fox chamois I normally would wear. Problems for me were they were quite small to get on up and over my hips, then when I got them there, it was too snug on my belly and oddly loose on my thighs. I would say that I have fairly large thighs and that has never been an issue, I rode with them anyways and they did stay down on my legs without riding up, but I don't care much for the roll down on my belly with the waistline. Maybe if I was thinner this wouldn't occur.

Not the fit for me

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Large

I ordered a large because I tend to run between a M & L and reviews suggested sizing up. I'm not sure if the pair I got was produced incorrectly, but the waistband was super small and the leg opening barely gripped my thighs. An unusual combination for my body type. Usually, it's the thighs I have trouble with.

Comfortable fit & lightweight

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Medium

Love the high-rise, comfortable band around the thigh (read:doesn't squeeze my quads), and light mesh fabric. No awkward pinching, squeezing, or twisting with these. Just enough padding to be comfortable but not so much that you feel like you're wearing a diaper.
They do seem to run a tad small - I purchased bc.com Empire bike shorts in a Small, but ended up getting a Medium in these liners. Size up if you're unsure, but definitely recommend.

Nice fit

  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

I never used this brand and it was a bit of gamble to purchase it. So far it seems ok. The fit is nice and material feels good and stretchy.

Run small

  • Fit: Runs small

Get a size larger if you have a butt :) Guess I'll be getting an XL.

Comfort! And not too tight on the quads.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

OK SO, normally I HATE those elastic bands at the bottom of the leg on liners. I have pretty muscular quads and even when the rest of the shorts fit in the waist/butt/hips, those bands are ALWAYS too tight and literally leave a mark on my leg hours after I've taken them off. NOT THESE! (Round of applause). I have these in a small. I'm about 5'4 123lbs athletic build. I love them. They're comfy and stay in place but don't feel like they're pinching me anywhere. Also they are super high-waisted (just covered my belly button). Big fan.

Bring on the comfort

  • Size Bought: Small

These liners are a must have for long rides. They have just enough padding to give you comfort and not get in the way or look/feel excessive. Fitting down the thigh and helps keep your shorts in place! I won't be riding much without a pair of these.
