Backland Carbon Alpine Touring Boot

If you're the type of skier who is willing to go the extra mile for better lines, and doesn’t like to be held back by extra ounces and sub-par range of motion in walk mode, then the Atomic Backland Carbon Alpine Touring Boot is everything you need. It's impressively light, weighing in at just over four pounds per pair, and a generous 72-degree range of motion in walk mode perfectly complements its light weight by actually allowing you to take full, efficient strides, whether you're in for a long, flat slog or tackling steep switchbacks. The boot comes with Atomic's stiff Quick Click tongue, which can be removed for more comfort and mobility on climbs, and easily snaps back on for the descent.

The Grilamid shell is to thank for the Backland Carbon's low weight, but it that doesn’t mean there's any sacrifice in downhill performance due to the carbon reinforcements, which make the boot stiff and also maintains a consistent flex in different temperatures. Atomic added a carbon spine, too, providing smooth power transfer from the boot to the ski for better control on steep, technical descents. Thankfully, all this performance doesn’t come at the price of comfort. The shell and plush liner are both fully thermo-moldable so you can customize the boot to the shape of your foot for added precision, and the three-point closure system wraps your foot securely to keep it in place as you lay on your edges. Complete with rockered rubber soles for more efficient walking and a reliable grip on slick bootpacks, the Backland Carbon is ready to take you longer distances for more epic turns.

  • Go fast and light with this uphill-oriented touring boot
  • Narrow 98mm last for a performance-first fit
  • Impressive 74-degree range of motion maximizes uphill efficiency
  • Lightweight Grilamid shell is carbon-reinforced for stiffness
  • Carbon spine adds superb power transfer for hard skiing
  • Cross Lace system securely wraps foot for a precise fit
  • Thermo-moldable liner and shell offers customizable comfort
  • Stiff tongue can be removed on climbs for added comfort

Solid Choice for Long Tours

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The Backland Carbon is a great boot for long fast tours in the Wasatch. This isn't a boot for the rando/skimo folks, but strikes a good balance between lightweight tourability and still being skiable in technical terrain. If you're into skiing downhill but want to get in an extra dawn patrol lap before work these might be a good choice for you. The power strap feels pretty weak and is rather integral in cranking the boot down when it comes time to ski (I would be nervous to ski these aggressively without having them pretty tight), particularly given the shape of the plastic tongue - I'm interested to see if it lasts indefinitely.

Great lightweight boot for long days

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've been using these boots for over a year and absolutely love them. Lightweight for the uphills and the inserts allow them to be stiff but nimble for the decent. Only complaint is the soft rubber in the heel. I've noticed abrasion when using risers. Highly recommend this boot.

Great boots for long tours

I picked these up at the beginning of the 17/18 season and put them through alot of miles in every kind of condition. In the lighwieght uphill category I love em! I skied them with the DPS Wailer 106s and the Movement Alptracks 88 and felt that the boots were paired perfectly for these lightweight skis.
On the uphill they are amazing, with more range of motion then your ankle knows what to do with. When you remove the tongue they literally feel like hiking boots, its amazing. They are very comfortable (for a ski boot), and I even felt totally comfortable doing long approaches in these on dirt and rock before reaching the snow. And I've had no durability problems.
For the down, they're shockingly supportive for how light they are. Removing and putting the tongue back in is kind of annoying but easy and I'm usually still ready to ski before my partners so no complaints there. I find these boots to be plenty stiff but the flex is minimal and can feel like your shins are bashing into a wall in chopped up snow. The cuff feels low which I think adds to the shin bashing. Which brings me to my biggest advice for people who buy this boot. Get rid of that stock liner! Put an intuition liner in this boot and the flex will feel better, the shin bang disappears and you'll just love your life.
If you're looking for a lightwieght uphill oriented boot (for long tours or ski mountaineering) that sacrifices little on the down then I would recomend this boot. Its a great boot. Just get a new liner
