Love them

    Great boat/beach shoe.

    One word....Perfect!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 14

I used these hiking through jungles in Belize. I used these hiking all over Kauai. I used these fishing. They work exactly as described, fit perfectly from day one with no blisters whatsoever, and they dried quick with zero stank foot remaining. Expensive...yes....worth the price.....yes! What impressed me the most was the grip, even when hiking down a muddy cliff side.

    • Fit: True to size

Absolutely LOVE how much extra confidence these shoes gave me while hiking the subway this weekend in Zion.

Start with the basics - the fit is true to size. If you planned on wearing a thick Neoprene sock with them I could see it being practical to order a half size up. If you're plan to use a normal sock or even a thin neoprene sock, probably best to stay true to size. Might be able to get away with a half size down if you planned to wear them without socks.

The footbed and arch support in these shoes was absolutely perfect for me. That doesn't necessarily mean that it will be for everyone, but I wore these through the entire subway without any break-in whatsoever and had no foot pain the next morning. Not much more you can ask for in my opinion.

In hiking the subway, you're hiking on or in sand, dry rock, water, and some mud. On dry rock and in hiking in the water on slippery rocks, I have a hard time imagining a shoe that would've inspired more confidence. The rubber was plenty sticky, even inspiring confidence on rappels over wet surfaces.

The drainage system in this shoe was as good or better than anything I've ever worn. The shoe has small drains on the toe of the shoe that allow water to escape with every step. I don't feel like the vents allowed anything in, and definitely nothing bigger than sand.

Couldn't be more thrilled with a shoe that performs this well and looks great. I got the Charcoal Grey and I love it.

    Best. River-Shoes. Ever

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs large

I bought these as a birthday present for myself right before a Grand Canyon trip last summer. The plan was for them to be the backups for my Chacos (on water) and approach shoes (on side hikes). I never once put on the Chacos or Scarpas.
To begin with I have tried every variety or river shoe, Teva, NRS, Chaco, Keen and nothing comes close.
    1. The tread is amazing. Especially when wet. I notice no difference in traction when wet and they are far grippier than any of the others mentioned above.
    2. They are light and soft but still have support. I am no ounce counting trail runner, but the footbed on these is amazing and if I were a trail runner I am sure these would be my daily runners. They felt broken in out of the box and I have never hiked so rigorously and technically on side canyon hikes without my feet hurting. They are just as good with out without socks, and there are no chaffing spots whatsoever.
    3. As water shoes... they actually drain immediately AND dry quick. Every other river shoe I have had stays a little moist... and get stinky. These don't feel soggy to put on the morning after walking through a river. I have smelly feet and after 16 days in the August Arizona heat these shoes did not stink.
    4. As river shoes... they do not collect sand. I don't know how. Every other river shoe I have had required removing to get sand out if going in and out of the water. I really don't know how but while hopping in and out of the boat in chocolate milk water all day I never had an issue with silt building up.

It was hard to justify the sticker price, but these are so multifunctional I will get another pair when these wear out (or I lose them to the river in the night).
Size wise, these are roomy so order down half a size. I am normally about an 11, the 10.5 have enough room for thick neoprene socks or drysuit feet.

    Hey Alex,

Thanks for the killer review my man! I think Astral has a winner with these bad boys!

Hey there - THANK YOU for such a great review. Astral killed it on the TR1 series. You also need to try the Loyak and Brewer 2.0. Mind blow!

    Happy Trails,

Great light hikers in and out of water!

These are really comfortable to wear without socks on warmer days. No chaffing or hot spots like I've had with other water shoes. The grip has been nice on slick inclined slopes and no excessive wear so far on the soles.

I've had them on mostly dry ground so far but plan on using them at Havasupai and the Narrows this summer where I expect them to be perfect for hiking through the water for extended periods. I'll report back once I've done those trips.

I sized up half a size to 11 but my feet are slightly wider. Length wise the 10.5 were fine, they were just slightly tight in the toe box for me.

    Great shoes for dog hikes!

These shoes are great for hiking (lightweight/solid sole/good toe protection). However they would be pretty average at best if it wasn't for the great water drainage and dry system. I take these things out whenever I take my dog with me. Fear not if there is a river they want to traverse. Just jump right in with these guys and you will go from fully wet to dry in minutes. If you are looking for a hiking shoe that can also handle wet terrain give these a shot!

Thank you for the review, George!
