The MILLE GT Jacket ULTRAZ Winter from Assos continues the commitment from the Swiss apparel maker in providing exceptional cold weather clothing that’s essential during winter rides and training. This MILLE GT is essentially the replacement for the bonkaMILLE with some key technical updates to the softshell composition and its orientation on the jacket providing excellent insulation properties without the fear of overheating. As part of the MILLE GT line, its cut in Assos' regularFit tailoring for a body-mapped performance fit that’s slightly less form-fitting than the Racing Fit offering room for base layers and jerseys without compromising the fit on the bike. With a wind- and waterproof protection on the front and sleeves and a 4-way stretch providing a refined on-the-bike fit, this the ULTRAZ provides the ideal defense against winter elements that you'd expect from a much more robust jacket with the bulk you'd be used to with a hardy long-sleeve jersey. The MILLE GT ULTRAZ once again solidifies Assos as the leader of cutting-edge cycling apparel.

As we alluded to above, the ULTRAZ receives some new fabrics to help extend is winter capabilities while increasing its breathability for a larger temperature comfort range. Assos recently streamlined its climaRange designations with a 1 for summer, 2 for spring and fall, and 3 for winter. Naturally, this jacket is a solid 3 and is the one to don when winter is most formidable. The front facing part of the jacket that takes the brunt of frigid blasts utilizes Assos' new NEOS ULTRA twinDeck with RX. It's a two-layer design with one doing the windproofing and the other one insulating. The outer layer is the NEOS ULTRA, its new water- and windproof, flexible membrane that is highly breathable allowing you to participate in high-output tempo and intervals and stay drier and more comfortable. Its inner layer is Assos' RX fabric, a brushed fleecy material that allows heat to escape while wicking away moisture. On the arms and upper back, NEO LIGHT is utilized for a light, stretchy, and more vapor-permeable softshell for better ventilation while still providing protection from road spray and light rain. The fit is further bolstered with its use of rear stabilizer S7 knit that stretches only on the vertical plane for a superb fit while reaching to the bars, and when paired with the 2W waistWave construction, it prevents the hem from riding up while also supporting fully loaded pockets. Speaking of pockets, the three rear ones feature its Triple Ramp design that's placed at the optimum height for easy access and feature internal seams that create a lid that prevents the contents from getting jettisoned over rougher roads and gravel.

The ULTRAZ has a few more elements that exemplify Assos' mastery in constructing winter clothing. The jacket comes with a thin neck protector using the same RX fabric that you can choose to wear or not throughout the course of the ride and it helps seal the collar from the elements. The raglan cut sleeves terminate with cuffs that are optimized to fit inside winter gloves ensuring that drafts or errant precipitation don't enter and ruin your ride. Lastly, the full-length Camlock zipper allows for easy temperature regulation on the climbs and descents.

Pair the Assos MILLE GT Jacket ULTRAZ Winter with its winter skinFoil baselayer, winter bib tights, winter gloves, overshoes, and a hat and tackle winter's worse. It's available in seven sizes from X-Small to TIR and in the colors blackSeries, blueBadge, and nationalRed.

  • Exceptionally breathable for high-output comfort
  • Cut in a MILLE regularFit that allows for slightly more room
  • Stowable, integrated face mask and lie-flat cuffs seal out winter
  • Full-length front zipper lets you adjust the level of airflow

A logical upgrade

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Small

I have the predecessor to this jacket, the Bonka (Cento) as well as the Castelli Alpha, and others. This jacket is the logical next step from the Bonka, in that it can cope with rain with the new water resistant material. The design philosophy is still the same though, and the back is much airier than other jackets (such as the Alpha). That means Assos thinks you're working hard all the time and need the venting. If you're like me and can't quite manage that level of effort, this jacket can be cold because the heavy insulation makes you sweat and if you don't keep at it you'll get chilled. I think the situation has improved from the Bonka, which had this problem in spades, but it is still a jacket for the hammerhead.

On fit, Assos says I'm a Small (5' 8", 145 pounds) and I agree.  At least for the smaller sizes, the suggestion that this jacket is a relaxed fit is laughable. There is room for a single base layer, no more. I say, don't size up, the sleeves and zipper will be too long. This jacket feels very tight on first putting it on. Don't panic, there is a ton of stretch and also I think there is a break in period because the material is stiff. But that initial impression is going to be a problem for many, the collar is stiff and the stored buff in back feels like a hand in the middle of the back, I hate it.

Although my review is quite critical, I still think this a great jacket even though it might not work the best for me. It is a serious piece of work, well made and carefully thought out.

Best winter jacket i have owned

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small

I have had a lot of winter riding jackets - Castelli, Gore, Ale, Rapha, Pearl Izumi - and I own 2 Assos Ij.bonka jackets (the jackets that Assos replaced with this one). This is the best. Period. Have used it about 6 times this winter. Great insulation, keeps the water out. I have worn it only with an Assos Skinfoil 5/7 or 6/7 base layer - nothing more. Keeps you warm and dry. The fit seems a bit small to me - I wear an XLG in Assos - but I did not need to upsize. When you're on the bike in the cold - this is the jacket you want to wear.

Best. Jacket. Ever.

This jacket rocks. It keeps the wind and cold out, but also breathes sufficiently so that you don't end up soaked underneath. The fit is exactly as promised per Assos' description, and the various features (zipper, cuffed sleeves, etc.) work as they're supposed to. If there's any one minus to the jacket (other than the astronomical price, it's the built in neck protector. It works well enough and stows easily, but in my estimation is superfluous: everyone already owns one or more neck/face warming garments.) Really happy with this jacket so far.

Don't usually write reviews but this is a great piece of kit for my needs. Am in Chicago and this is first year am riding through winter. so need a jacket that will cope with temps below freezing on fast tempo group rides and cure current issue of overheating from layering or using a hard shell.
Jacket is awesome, I went with the Lolly red for HIVIZ in XL, read that it runs small so CC excellent service team kindly shipped me an XL and a XLG. The XL fits perfectly, and CC picked up free return shipping on the other size so all good.
Jacket is more relaxed fit than expected and totally bullet proof, been out on couple of fast training rides in sub zero with 20+mph gusts and insulation and wind stopper protect you from everything. Cannot comment on wet and snow yet. Can attest to build quality, can really feel the effect of the underarm and back material venting reducing sweat trapped in base layer. The built in face mask is bonus, using as neck gaiter is great for early morning starts before day wars up. Highly recommend.

thanks for sharing, whT base layers did u use? what were the temps during those 20 MPH group rides? I have a Mille Winter and it works great bit I have not ventured out when it is sub 32 F

Jose, Just saw your question used wither Skinfoil 2/3 with undervest or long merino icebreaker. Temps 25 to 35 are fine with insulated long bibs and skullcap. Couple of guys was riding with really suffered wearing windproof gear without the insulation and wrist/neck/body seals on the jacket which really help.

A winter jacket that is meant for winter

I had a Bellwether jacket I used for 20 years and it was time to replace it (stained, ripped, a bit baggy). I wanted something light that did not need much layering in order to stay warm. My Bellwether could keep me warm with just one shirt underneath. I just could not find one. I considered Gore, Rapha, Pearl Izumi, etc. I accidentally came across Assos and luckily I had a local shop that sold them. I tried it and knew that was going to my jacket. The shop only had black so I opted for the orange once I saw the choices on line. They do run small!! I wear mediums and had to go to XL. I have had it for 2 weeks now and so far have been through a rainy 40's day, 30's with a bit of snow and a 20's days. Impressions:
-jacket feels supple
-when you get the right size, it feels great
-really does keep you dry and I really wasn't buying it for that (have not been in a downpour yet)
-keeps wind out everywhere
-have not used the integrated face mask but it easy to put on and stow away. You never know it is there when not in use
-I have only used a base layer (Assos brand) and/or an Ibex Woolie and have been warm - almost too warm. I still need to find the proper balance.
-Pockets are roomy but I have only used them once

This is a pricey jacket but even if you can't get a deal I highly recommend it because if you need a winter jacket you want to stay warm and this does an incredible job.

Fits small

I just returned this item. Jacket was too small. I wear the SS Equipe jersey in a size small. I ordered this jacket in medium and it was way too small - go figure.

Heavy duty protection.

The ULTRAZ is the only jacket I have been using this winter. I have relocated to Central Oregon and my wardrobe needed an update for the colder temperatures. I am mostly using this for gravel and trail riding in temperatures from 25-45 F. I have varied the base layers with as little as a CRAFT FUSEKNIT, to the decade old Assos heavy winter base layer, both with zipper necks, and additionally a summer base layer. The neck of the ULTRAZ is large enough to accommodate turtle neck layering without constricting the throat.
Which brings me to the built in face protector. In all of these temperatures I have been wearing an open top, full head protector, with a FuguHelm cap. The built in is connected by 2 1/2 inches of material at the back label, so pulling it up to cover the head up to the FuguHelm leaves a considerable gap for cold air at the base of the neck. So my solution is a full head protector and using the built-in to fill the neck or pulling it up over the face as needed. I have ridden in light precipitation on wet gravel roads and I am kept comfortable and dry. Enough so, I can zip down for temperature control. That said, in these temperatures my feet get cold first, even while wearing winter boots. My core is fully protected and has not gotten cold.
The jacket material sheds moisture and blocks wind to my satisfaction. In mid 30s temperatures, I met 25mph wind gusts, and the only entry seemed to be at the junction of the neck and zipper. The waistband, stretchier in the back, is snug enough to prevent wind from entering from the bottom, and I will add, so are the wrist cuffs. The 1 3/8 inch elastic cuffs are perfect for the gloves I am using.
The 3 rear pockets are easy to access. The internal pocket "lid", 2 3/4 inches deep, made of a mesh material, can work to keep you iPhone secure if it is standing upright. Winter spray will enter the pockets so waterproof protection if you choose. The only thing this jacket is missing is a zippered pocket, but it is not enough to rate this jacket less than 5 stars.
This jacket is distinctly, two layers. The outer soft-shell and the inner fleece. On my dirtiest rides I have washed the jacket, taking care to dry the outside for a bit before turning it inside out on the hanger in order to dry the inner fleece layer overnight. I have also, wiped off the dirt spray with good results. This jacket has added to the number of days I am riding outside. I purchased the Blackseries and I like the graphics and overall look.

Best Winter Riding Jacket "Amen"

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: XLG

Received this amazing jacket just in time for a real life winter riding test. Hands down best winter riding jacket ever. I was using an older Bike Gore jacket which went missing when I moved a couple of years ago.
A great friend I ride with swears by Assos and convinced me to try the system. I was thanking Didier and Assos today. Did my first ride with this amazing jacket in NNJ today, 25 farenheit with howling winds.
I was wearing the Assos skin foil early winter base layer and this jacket with the incorporated neck gaiter. I am happy to report the system worked exceptionally well and made my ride super enjoyable.
Thank you Assos. So looking forward to expanding the line when budget permits. Money very well spent!!

The new Ultraz version of the Mille GT jacket is a great winter jacket. I had the bonka.6 Mille jacket but sold it because it was too loose of a fit at the waist. I was about to order the bonka.6 Cento, when this version of the Mille GT appeared on Assos' website. I was a little concerned at first because of the "Mille" designation - thinking it was going to be just as loose of a fit as the bonka.6 Mille jacket. It isn't. It is a little more form fitting which is what I was hoping for. I can't compare it to the bonka Cento as I have never tried that one, but the Ultraz is certainly more form fitting than the bonka Mille. Not too tight though. Perfect in my opinion.

The protection, insulation and features are incredible for this jacket at this price. The built-in neck/face warmer is a great feature as you just have to grab your favorite hat and you're set.

I rode 30+ miles with this jacket with the following kit: bonka tights, winter skin foil, Ultraz jacket, Stinger cap, bonka gloves, and winter booties. Temps were 30's to low 40's Fahrenheit. I never felt the chill anywhere. When the temp got into the 40's towards the end of my ride, I had to halfway unzip the jacket a few times to ventilate.

I'm 6'2" and 190 lbs. and I wear an XL in Assos gear all the time. I can't wait to wear this for fatbike season this winter. Given my experience in the 30-degree weather, I can easily see wearing this jacket with just the winter skin foil in temps down into the 20's.
