Arc'teryx Shuksan Jacket - Men's

High peak for the golden eagle.

As waves of glittering powder rise and fall with every turn, your child-like enthusiasm and fervor grows greater, robust in its size, shedding unwavering eagerness for the adventure to never end. Named after Mount Baker's eastern cousin, the Arc'teryx Men's Shuksan Jacket is a playful, hardy companion for your on-piste or backcountry dreams. Built to endure rigorous climbs, variegated terrain, and swift descents, the Shuksan is crafted with an articulated, streamlined fit that caters specifically to both a wide range of motion and technical layering, should the estimated temperatures dip below a range of comfortably cool.

Ultimately the Shuksan provides unlimited freedom of movement, however the key to its success is in the waterproof yet breathable protection of its thre-layer Gore-Tex exterior. The Gore-Tex fabric and powder skirt ensures foolproof protection from the winter elements while the lightweight and low-profile Coreloft synthetic insulation keeps you cozy warm, even when the weather takes a turn for the worse. So should the wayward winds of Washington whirl with a fuss, the DropHood is helmet-compatible and delivers exceptional coverage without compromising your peripheral vision. However, on the other hand, should temperatures turn towards toasty, the PowderGuard mesh-backed, underarm vents assures optimal body temperature regulation as an internal mesh dump pocket stows your hat, gloves, or goggles should you need a momentary breather.

Nice all-around winter coat

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

The coat is very warm, durable, waterproof, but also breathable. The coat even with its insulation was shockingly lightweight

For Lake Tahoe ski resorts like Squaw, the month of January 2017 will go down as epic. So my January 2017 test of an extra large Shuksan jacket involved snowboarding on fresh powder up to my knees (I am 6-1, 200 lbs.). The Shuksan performed admirably and the Coreloft insulation kept me warm. The hood covered my POC helmet well and did not restrict my vision. It was hard to tell that I was wearing a jacket hood over my helmet. The tailoring is superb. It feels like the designers gave a lot of thought to crafting this jacket. The fit seems true to size. The collar kept my neck and lower face protected and did not get in the way when I turned my head from side to side. My face and chin were not irritated by the collar of the Shuksan. The zippers worked flawlessly and did not catch or have any problems with alignment. The pass pocket on the sleeve is a nice touch. I was informed by Arcteryx that the Chilkoot pant is made to match this jacket. To my knowledge, the pants do not interface with the jacket to keep snow out. That would be a cool feature. Also, the large pocket on the inside of the jacket that is made for goggles or an I Phone does not have Velcro or a zipper to keep it tight at the top. Over all, the Shuksan jacket exudes exceptional quality and craftsmanship.

I bought this jacket primarily for Pacific NW skiing (wet), but have been wringing it out on a trip to Colorado where temps have been well down to the low teens with windchill in the minus range. I'm 5'11" and 170 lb, got a large on recommendation of Backcountry. Excellent jacket, very warm with sensible layering, good features including a killer hood that fits over helmets easily, large inside pocket for toque, etc. Look forward to trying it out more back in the "NorthWet."

Like many arc'teryx pieces with athletic fit, I sized up because I don't like tight jackets when I snowboard. This jacket has good coverage, feels extremely comfortable on, and has all the necessary pockets. The times that I have worn it, it's been around 15-20 degrees F. Despite usually being colder than my friends, I have stayed quite warm with just a tshirt and crew neck below. This jacket easily dumps heat by opening the vents and the powderguards and snowskirt keeps me dry. Looks great on the slopes or in town. Highly recommend if you do a lot of resort skiing!
