Arc'teryx Cerium LT Hooded Down Jacket - Women's

A lightweight down jacket for cloudless, chilly days.

The Arc'teryx Women's Cerium LT Hooded Down Jacket is the lightest piece in the Cerium series, and possibly the warmest, too. The one-two punch of the high-tenacity Arato face fabric and high-warmth-low-weight of the 850-fill European goose down insulation make this piece a real knock-out when it comes to staying warm in cold and dry conditions.

When it comes to winning money and down insulation, the higher the number, the better off you'll be. So, a higher fill-power down, like the 850-fill used in the Cerium LT, refers to how much space a single ounce of down occupies. And the more space used, means more air that's trapped between the fibers of the down. That trapped air creates a barrier between hot and cold, so warm air stays near you, and cold air stays away. If you take this logic one step further, one ounce of a particular down takes up more space than other type of down, it stands to reason that you'll need less of the 'bigger' down to keep you warm, thus reducing the weight of your jacket. Case in point, the Cerium's 850-fill down keeps you toasty-warm. The whole winning money thing, well, the Cerium can't do much for you there.

And since untreated down doesn't work when wet, the folks at Arc'teryx put synthetic insulation in places most likely to get wet. This translates into synthetic insulation on your shoulders, collar, hem, and armpits, along with a DWR-finish that withstands a light drizzle until you reach shelter, without sacrificing too much warmth. This super-light jacket also comes with it's own stuff sack, so the jacket remains protected from pokes and prods. Not to mention, the same down hugging your tummy also swaddles your melon, courtesy of the insulated low-profile StormHood.

Disappointing

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I've never reviewed a product before but feel compelled to write one for this jacket. It is light weight, warm and a great color! However, after wearing it for only a few months (normal day to day wear, nothing rigorous or technical), it has not worn well. It started leaking feathers within a few weeks, which eventually turned into holes. The sleeve also tore when removing it from an Arc'teryx shell (which I love!). At this point, I leave a trail of feathers any time I wear this jacket. I contacted their customer service, who was super friendly and informed me that these issues were not manufacturer defects but they'd be happy to repair the jacket for a fee. I've not experienced anything like this with other down jackets from Patagonia, North Face or Canada Goose (including other light weight down jackets). This is not the quality I expect from Arc'teryx and hope this is a fluke. I will think twice before purchasing any non-SV or MX Arc'teryx garments again.

I am so disappointed to hear that Arc'teryx denied your claim for help!
Are you having the jacket sent back to them for repair or is there anything I can help with to make sure you're taken care of?

Too short

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

I'm not the alpinist, or skier. I'm plain jane who loves to walk her dogs in all types of weather, which generally means bending over in jeans to wipe fur or play. This jacket, while articulately made and excellent features, is just too plain short. The elastic edged hood wears well, sleeves are good, fit across shoulders is good, but with my low waisted jeans, it get's a bit chilly if you know what I mean. If you lift your arms, same problem. I don't have a super long torso either, just the opposite. Sometimes I look for petite in shirts/sweaters for that reason but my shoulders are usually too big. Not sure how that many people can say it's for the activists, but just throwing your arms around brings up the hem to a height I'm not so keen on to keep warm. I really wanted this jacket to have the length of 26cm down the back. I opted to keep the Yerba coat (ordered them both for this reason) because it has the length I wanted, and hopefully the warmth I need. I'll be returning this one sadly. Beautiful coat. Color is plum like, better than in the photo too.

Best Winter Jacket!

I had friends praise Arc'teryx for years before I saved up and bought something from their line. I've definitely a convert! This jacket keeps me so warm during the cold Montana winters. The hood stays up and fits really well around the face. It also has a very flattering cut that doesn't make me feel like I'm a giant marshmallow. Inside one of the pockets is the stuff sack, which is surprisingly handy! My only gripe is that I bought a very light, bright color and it shows wear and dirt. I found the medium size to be accurate, I have broad shoulders and chest and the medium allows me to wear a sweater underneath the jacket. Otherwise, it's the perfect winter jacket!

Best Winter Jacket!

Thanks for the review, Emmy! How well is it washing clean? Also, what detergent do you use? We have the Tech Wash that will also add a water repellent.

Great coat but needs an inside pocket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: s/p

This is a wonderful light warm coat with a hood that is essential when you are back country skiing and its cold. It stuffs easily into your bag or backpack and I really like the color. The downside is that it only has the 2 lower side zip pockets, nothing inside or on the outside around the chest area for your phone, etc.. More pockets would make this a perfect coat.

Finally a jacket that fits my wide shoulders and horror (breasts). This is the only jacket I have tried on this year that actually lets me move my arms freely. I am wide shouldered but not enormous I weigh a lot (damn muscles) but am generally a large up top and medium/large bottom. I had to buy this in an XL. It fits my shoulders and chest with ease and wasnt geossly baggy everywhere else. I still have loads of room for layers under there. I was trying on larges in mountain hardwear, north face, marmot, mammut, REI, ll bean, OR, Patagonia all of which were too tight in the shoulders or chest if I tried their xl versions I swam in them everywhere. So I think I can say that these ceriums must run a bit small seeing that I have essentially tried every other brand on this year. Ok so on to the good stuff and the answer to my two plus year search to replace my ten year old MH jacket.

Pros: love the marianas color, very pretty and neutral and the orange cuffs/trim give it a kick. The fabric is light and flexible, the down doesn't poke through the fabric. I don't look like the Michelin or stay puffed marshmallow man and actually look as if I have a waist. The hood fits nicely and stays put, doesn't get in the way and actually keeps my head and neck warm. I have not tried it in snow because the snow gods have been cruel this year and left us mostly dry. I have stood and watched stars in 25 degree weather with only a t shirt underneath and stayed mostly ok, I'm always cold so that's saying a lot.

Cons: the price is up there, as in investment up there so I am afraid to wear it since I have a new lab puppy. Big drawback for me is that there is no chest pocket. Wicked bummer since I love lip balm and keeping my cash close to my heart. There is no bottom drawstring for me not really an issue I never use them anyway even if I have them. Last con is the zipper is tiny and so is the fob definitely not doable with gloves or mits on so I will get a fob thing,

Summary: quality down responsibly sourced good fitting great looking down jacket. I'm not freezing which is awesome!!!!! Finally a winner.

I have been shopping for over a year and tried all different kinds of high loft packable down jackets. This one is incredible! It looks good, it packs down small, and is super warm! I will be taking this jacket with me everywhere!

Won my wife over

I'm somewhat of a label junkie, and as such I'm picky about my gear. My wife had always been someone that prefers to go the other route, usually feeling an Old Navy jacket is pretty much as good as any. Coincidentally she also suffers from some physical maladies that are greatly amplified based upon the temperature she is in. Well for Valentine's Day I thought, hey the red one is awesome and and a good deal so let's surprise her with a jacket. She was not pleased I would spend so much on something nonessential. That was almost 2 years ago, since then I've routinely heard her tell people how wrong she was. She swears by this jacket, it's one of the best investments we could've made. Fits great, super warm, not bulky. It's just an awesome piece of gear.

    On the coldest of days

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size

Got this as a gift fro my friend and she reports that it fits snug and comfortable with room to wear base and fleece layers underneath. "I can wear it on the coldest of days" great for around town or out in the mountains.

    Solid design

    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Medium

Great for skiing, hiking, backpacking, or round the town errands. Flattering and functional. Perfect extra layer, light and comes with own bag so packing it down on a moments notice is a breeze. Definitely size up!

Thanks for the review Susan! Super helpful to get this feedback out to the community.

I live in an area that gets down to 10 below in the winter. With a mid-layer underneath, would this jacket keep me warm during those days?

The Cerium LT Hoody is designed as a technical, insulating mid layer. If you're consistently experiencing temps at 10 below I'd consider looking at the Thorium SV or the Cerium SV instead. Hope that helps!

It is my third brend that i am having and the other two had not enought wormth, even thoe they promised to be... But this one is a hole different story!! I have the LT modle and it fits great, looks greate, very light and very worm. I guess it is best used for low temperturs who are above the 0 chelzius / degrees. For snow - maybe you should consider the SV modle. Worth every penny!!!

I cannot say enough good things about this jacket. The slim fit makes it flattering for a puffy. It's extremely lightweight and very warm.

I'm not the biggest fan of the orange elastic that accents the Marianas, but the primary color of the jacket is amazing.

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I've owned a couple of other down jackets and there are some features about this one that are great. The hood fits well and is also adjustable at the back so that it doesn't fall over your eyes. The zipper is easy to use and stays closed (unlike some!) There are no cold spots. I initially brought a L (I am a size 10) but it was too snug round the chest so I returned it for an XL. The XL seemed to be more of an XXL - the jump up in size was a lot. The upper arms and especially the bottom were now too big. The arms I could deal with, but there is no elastic or drawstring round the hem, and it felt drafty because it was too big. I wore it over a shirt and a fleece, but still too big. This is sad, because it feels like a great jacket both for backpacking and around town. If the fit is right for you, I would definitely recommend it.

    what cold?

This down is amazing!!! Cant feel the cold or wind. It does leak a little but nothing out of control. The sleeves are a great length especially since i have long arms. I would size up

I bought this jacket speifically for a thru hike of the PCT. However, before I hit the trail, I spent a winter working at a Dog sledding outfitter in the Yukon. I was surprised to find that I could wear this jacket in sub arctic conditions while being active and stay toasty warm. The jacket has a flattering shape--and despite being Ultra light--it has a hood with drawstring closure and good pockets. The only feature I wish they had kept would be drawstring along the bottom of the jacket to block out drafts in windy conditions. It packs up small. I would not wear this jacket for outdoor work or bouldering on granite--as the material is thin and would easily rip or snag---but for hiking, skiing and travel---this is a great choice.
