    Fan-powered protection.

While a bunch of needless bells and whistles may earn some oohs and aahhs on the trade show floor, most backcountry travelers prefer intuitive use and simple functionality when using their gear out in the field. Putting simplicity at the forefront of its design, the Arc'teryx Voltair 20 Backpack marks a departure in avalanche airbag systems through a powerful fan-powered system that can be deployed multiple times in a single day and is reliable in temperatures down to 14F.

Arc'teryx's Voltair airbag system utilizes a 22.2V lithium-ion polymer battery (sold separate) that's rechargeable and capable of inflating the bag upwards of 20 times a day in temperatures as low as 14F. This multi-deployment system doesn't just provide extra peace of mind when you're traveling in the backcountry, but it gives you, the user, the opportunity to practice with the bag in the field, so you won't be caught off guard in the event of an emergency. The simple and intuitive deployment system consists of an always-exposed mechanical pull that can be quickly unlocked and deployed with just a quick twist and pull. The mechanical deployment system does away with any hiccups that may come with an electronic system, ensuring the bag deploys when it matters most. Once activated, the centrifugal blower rapidly inflates the airbag in under seven seconds, then ensures the bag maintains proper inflation by pushing additional air in the bag every five seconds after the initial deployment.

The pack itself maintains a simplistic design that consists of two main compartments and a dedicated avy tool pocket to stow your climbing skins, shovel, probe, and saw. External straps along the front of the bag will carry either skis or a snowboard and single ice axe when traveling in the alpine. A key component to any avalanche airbag is the pack's leg loop, so Arc'teryx gave the Voltair a simple and comfortable one-handed, glove-friendly wiregate leg loop clip, so you won't be tempted to leave it unclipped before you drop in. The water-resistant fabric repels moisture from snow and spindrift, and the water-resistant zippers ensure a water-tight closure to the pack, so you aren't surprised by any wet layers when you go to throw your puffy jacket on between powder laps on a storm day.

    Disappointed

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I was So stoked to get this 20L airbag. I committed to Arc'teryx over 20 years ago and have rarely been disappointed, but this bag is just that. I got the bag, but due to personal reasons I wasn't able to use it right away. When I finally unpackaged everything, it was beautiful! In Arc'teryx fashion the zippers were amazing and the quality was exceptional. Decided to hook up the battery and load the pack to walk around my house to make sure the fit was good. The battery right off the bat wouldn't charge (just kept beeping..) ok so I decide to hook it up in the pack and it fits beautifully. But the battery is significantly heavier than expected . Once the battery is in then it can be packed. As I go about the job, It soon becomes clear there's no hydration pocket...! I was probably in the description, my bad, but I just can't believe they couldn't figure out how to make this happen without interfering with deployment. If I'm headed somewhere that I need avalanche protection, I need water on demand..The only way I could figure out how to make it happen is to have the hose stick out the side of the zipper ? not for $1300, or carry and additional bag? no. Needless to say this is why I'm returning. If this isn't a concern for you, it's otherwise an amazing bag. The feel when the pack was on was extremely comfortable. It carried very balanced and fit well (I didn't wear it for long, but the fit was exceptional. I did some research on the battery too, it has issues. I did not ever deploy the bag so cannot fairly assess its performance. Overall for the $1300-$1600 price tag, a disappointment.

    Yet to be seen

I didn’t realize when I bought these (should have read the description better) hat it doesn’t come with the batter and the charger. I bought them separately and have had issues with the battery or the charger (not sure which as the combo didn’t work). Got he new batteries to charge a little and it seemed awesome. 🤞🏽 Hopefully my husband doesn’t have to use them.

      Awesome Airbag

I have the 20L version of the pack and it has been great for me and my touring style. I am able to fit my big shovel, probe, saw and a few extra layers easily inside the pack.

The bag is built by arc'teryx, so I know its going to last many years. I have tested it mulipule times and the trigger mechanism is very smooth and easy to operate. The bag does feel a little heavy when picking it up but the suspension system does a great job of distributing the weight.

I would take a look at this pack if you are looking for an airbag

Important! Do not select the frame size based upon the pack volume.
Packs are sized in Regular (R) and Tall (T). Sizing refers to your back length.
        Back Length:
To determine your size, measure down the spinal column from the 7th cervical vertebra to the level of the hip iliac crest.
        Hip Circumference:
Hip belt sizing is based on a measurement around the hip iliac crest. Measure around the body at the top edge of the hip iliac crest, approximately 2” below the point at which you would measure your waist.
        Chest Circumference:
Shoulder strap sizing refers to bust/chest circumference. Measure around the bust/chest at the fullest point.
