Great / Horrible Shorts

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: XL

I'd been looking for a good pair of "baggy" shorts for hot weather hiking/trail running. These shorts are one of the few I found that had the right material, combination of actual usable pockets, etc. that I had come across. When the arrived I like the material, mesh, pockets....until I tried them on. The shorts fit pretty close to what I wanted, maybe a hair tight. The mesh however was far smaller and really crushed the nether regions and rubbed in spots. So I exchanged the L (which for most companies is generally a good fit for me) for XL. The mesh in the XL was perfect but now the shorts are baggy and the material bunches up in my crotch when I walk and generally are very unattractive. It's a shame that there is such a mismatch with the inner and outer construction of the shorts because I really like the design and fabrics used. I wound up keeping them for short hikes and workouts but I'd be afraid to do any long distances with the shorts because of skin irritations and chafing. Can't recommend.

a different take

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

Like others, I found these shorts too small when I first got them, as though the elastic seemed stretched to the max when I put them on--I wear M in everything, got these in M. But I think in fact there just isn't much give in the elastic. They seem odd at first, but they fit fine. in reality. You just need to get over the oddity of the no-stretch elastic. I think I'm right about this because after getting two pairs in M, I got a third pair in L, because of the reviewers complaining that they are too small. The L was too big and I noticed right away that the elastic has no give, just as with the smaller size. So try these and be aware of that unusual feature. Why are they worth it? Above all because of the front pockets. I know of no other shorts with pockets like this. A flask will fit in each one, there's no bounce, the flasks don't interfere with my stride, and the placement means these pockets are much easier to use than any rear pockets. So for long runs when I don't want a waist pack, these are my go-to shorts. Any run on which I want some fluid but don't want hassle, these are my go-to shorts.

too small too tight

I don't know what's going on the Arc' brand designer's head,I always fit a M size, patagonia and the marmot Medium size always!but this short is too small than regular Medium size so as to hard to fit it into my hips, why such a nice designed short had asuch bad size indication? did the garments division see these feedback from these true buying experiences?

    High Quality

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size

These shorts are designed to sit above the knee, and allow a runner to move freely. The materials used in these shorts are of the best quality Arc'teryx can provide. If you are looking for a n above the knee running short, these are a great short!

I bought them for my boyfriend as a gift, he did not like the above the knee cut.

a little on the short side

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I received these as a gift. I probably wouldn't have purchased them on my own (initially the length would have put me off), but! they really are awesome running shorts.
They are on the short side for sure, but they are so light and easy to move in. The inside liner keeps everything in place and basically that is all I feel. I love the small back zipper pocket which is nice for stashing a key when doing some trail runs.

    Best running shorts around

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

Hands down the best shorts I have run in. They have held up in the craziest of distances. I thought the no zippers would cause things to fall out, of course Arc'teryx designed it correctly and everything stays put.

If there is a downsize to them, it's the price tag.

    SMALL!!!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Medium

I have an earlier version of these shorts (sans zippered pocket) in Medium, which I bought in an Arcteryx store in Toronto, but lost it, along with a couple of sweaty t-shirts, after leaving them behind at the gym. Ordered another pair recently in the same size, but they were MUCH SMALLER. I had issues simply pulling them up to my waist -- part of it was because the waist band had relatively little bulge (which I know), but mostly because they were too tight. Once on, the liner is so tight, it feels like someone was giving me a wedgie ...

I ran a marathon and several trail races in my first pair, but I doubt my second pair will see nearly as much use.

    Sizing way smaller

I alawYs wear medium. ALWays!! Everything Patagonia medium shorts and pants fit me perfectly in medium. I truly could barely get these on. I checked to see if I accidentally ordered women's medium? Nope. Men's medium. Fit me like I imagine Richard Simmons would want to wear his underwear. Quality seemed good though. The

      Bad A** shorts

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: large

5'10" 170-174#s and wear a large. Last year's shorts are my most favorite running shorts of all time. These are almost as good. These have a much longer string to tie them off, which is nice bc last years was the worst and I really in between the size of L and M. I prefer them to be a little baggier.

Added a zip pocket, safer to keep a key in.

Only Negative is they reduced the split of last years. I loved the split in the leg. Really showed off my muscle but not in a bragging way.

      Great distance shorts

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size

Not much to add on the previous review. The front stash pockets are what really attracted me to these shorts and they work great. You can easily cram 3 gels in each if you wanted. They work great, especially on the move. I like that they are not full split shorts. For this reason they work well in windy conditions. However, the side seam is un-noticable to me. I would like it if they made a long version and put about 2'' on the seam.

I've read a lot of opinions both ways on the waist for these. Personally I think it's nice. It's about an inch tall although you only see about 1/4 of it from the outside. It keeps the shorts in place for me just fine. I wear medium or medium long pants (32x32) in Arc' and have found the M shorts fit great. I do not need the drawstring but if you're running ultras or whatever and the pockets are filled it might be useful.

Beware of the picture of the black shorts. Every pic seems to show them with orange (to my eyes anyway). But the accents are a race car red. Doesn't bother me, but it's worth noting.

      Overall, solid race short.

Feels like I'm wearing nothing at all!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: Runs large

I have been running a long time and just made do with crappy gym shorts from target. NOT ANY MORE!! These shorts are amazing! put them on and forget about them, they weigh nothing and move so well. I have not been on a run with them long enough to need to carry anything in its many pockets, but they all seem well placed and I do not anticipate it being a problem to store some gels in there for longer runs.

I got a Medium, I have a 31 inch waist and they are a bit big, but they have a draw string that keeps them locked on my hips so that they do not fall down or ride up. Without the string they would have gotten 4 stars, but it works so well it made up for the shorts being a bit big in the waist

They are pretty short, so if you are not comfortable sporting some leg then you may want to look elsewhere. If you are looking for an amazing short for long trail runs and races. Look no further.
