Sidewinder Jacket

When you're looking for durable, breathable, waterproof protection at the resort or up the skin track, look no further than the Sidewinder Jacket from Arc'teryx. Boasting an 80 denier fabric weave, the Sidewinder is not only the most iconic in the Arc'teryx snowsports jackets but also the most durable. This jacket has undergone years of alternations based on experienced customer reviews to create the ultimate ski and snowboard jacket. This season's upgrade is in the iconic asymmetric flap. A new snap system is now in place to keep the collar secure when the jacket is partially unzipped so you have more versatility when wearing the Sidewinder. A non-bulky, fully taped, 3-layer Gore-Tex construction ensures complete weather protection from rain, wind, and snow so whether you find yourself in a downpour at a resort in the Pacific Northwest or being pounded by relentless gusts on a ridgeline, the Sidewinder will keep you dry, warm, and comfortable. With all this protection, the Sidewinder is still incredibly breathable. The Gore-Tex allows moisture vapor to escape while not allowing any moisture in to help regulate your body temperature inside the jacket.

  • Rugged snow sports jacket for protection and comfort on the slopes
  • Gore-Tex 3-layer construction provides complete weather protection
  • Most durable Arc'teryx snow sports specific shell handles abrasion
  • Iconic asymmetric zipper minimizes chin abrasion when fully zipped
  • Gusseted underarms ensure the jacket won't ride up in deep turns
  • Helmet compatible Stormhood further blocks out unsavory weather
  • Powder skirt snaps into compatible Arc'teryx pants to seal out snow
  • Arc'teryx consciously designs with a less is more approach

Older generation was WAY better

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: large

I am really bummed that it is 2-1/4" longer than it is supposed to be.... feels like I'm wearing a skirt: anticipate the zipper popping on chairlifts. It is slightly less accommodating in the chest for heavier layering but will suffice. Outer shell seems great, I am sure it will be nice and waterproof but the inner face fabric is also different than before and doesn't seem as breathable. Even the zippers are crappier. Other reviewers complained about Norrona Lofoten being kinda fragile so I'm gonna roll up the the waist and cuffs and just use the dang thing. .. ( Wish they didn't mess with a good thing) . P.S. these are just initial impressions and aside from being too long and a wee bit tight I still called it true to size below. (Good Luck)

Baffled by the cut

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Size Bought: Large

I want to love this jacket but could not even get past trying it on. The first thing I noticed was that the armpits cinched up on me even with nothing but a t-shirt underneath. It was worse as I added mid layers and then I could not lift my hand over my head. This was not an issue of the size being wrong. I have historically worn a large in arc'teryx - The sidewinder sleeves were more than long enough and my waist was swimming in the excess material, but the jacket seems to taper upwards and cinch in the armpits. Its almost like the jacket is built for narrow shoulders and wider hips.

mine is very narrow in the hips... mebbee because it's too dang long

Absolutely bombproof

I’ve had the previous iteration of the Sidewinder for 11 years and it is a shockingly durable jacket. I’m a hardboot snowboarder riding carving/racing boards, regularly flinging myself down on frozen corduroy at speed. The jacket is complete unfazed by this abuse, which is pretty incredible given the amount of friction generated. I’m finally ready for a new jacket and there’s no question the only option is another Sidewinder.

Absolutely bombproof

2nd iteration / 2019 is awesome too

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I'm on my second generation of this jacket. The first one was purchased in 2006 and truly was awesome. After 13 years it gave up the ghost and I was able to receive a new 2019 version.

Truly the best best best jacket. No issues at all.

The updates made to the jacket from my old jacket are appropriate and correct.

It's expensive, but my last one lasted 13 years! I'm sure this one will last at least that long.

2nd iteration / 2019 is awesome too

Mountain armor

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: Small

Bought this jacket three seasons ago and it has become my go to for skiing. I ski in the cascades and BC and this jacket has held up to everything, especially the wet. It is cut nice and big so I can layer up as needed. Last winter in Utah it was -20 with Windchill and I was able to fit a Patagonia Down Sweater hoody underneath and stay nice a toasty. The outer fabric is very burly and the jacket looks unscathed. The pockets hold everything I need, food, chap stick, pass, phone, wallet etc. I love how the chunky the zipper is. Last winter I went night skiing a lot and a layer of ice would build up on the front of the jacket, but the chunky zipper allowed me to easily unzip when it was coated in ice. I cannot easily get the hood over my helmet, but I wear a XL Poc Fornix and its pretty big. The collar of the jacket come up super high which is great we you are trying to escape the elements riding the lift. Pit zips are pretty standard, I really only use them in the spring. Internal dump pocket could be a bit bigger, but that's a small complaint. If you ski a lot in burly mountain weather and like to layer then this jacket is perfect.

Thanks for your review Travis! Glad you found your go to jacket.

Love

I’m 6 ft 190 with broad shoulders. I got the large and it is very large. I could probably fit a medium but didn’t wanna push it. I also owned last years version. I sold it and bought a different color this year. That shows how much I like this shell. The color Tui is a classic Navy blue. In comparison to last years version I believe they have improved the pockets. Maybe I just never noticed on my previous version, but the front hand pockets are now huge. I love it. They travel the entire inside front of the jacket for both the right and left hands. You could easily fit a couple beers and a sandwich in each. There are also the usual arm, phone, and dump pocket. They also added a small plastic snap to secure the collar. It’s a very minor improvement. It is completely wind and water proof and has survived a lot of trees. The only con is the price

hmm, mebbee I shoulda tried a medium except there isn't a lot of room in the chest, at least on mine. Perhaps quality control isn't what it used to be.

Best ski jacket I ever had

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

Got this jacket about two years ago, skiing 1-2 times per month during long Mammoth season. I'm skiing a lot in trees, many times I thought I've scratched it, but it still looks like new. All small details I want from jacket are there, can't name one thing I wish were done differently, except for price maybe. Definitely will recommend this jacket to anyone.

Thank you for the comment and feedback, we are super pumped you are enjoying the Jacket! Keep on crushing it!

Bought as a gift and returned

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs large

I bought this jacket as a gift and ended up returning it. This is not comparable to other size Larges that Arcteryx has made for shells in the past. It definitely runs large.

3 stars because of the fit? Doesn't seem compete testament to the jacket What about the features, materials, design? It's not suppose to be trim, like the Cassiar or my older Caden. Fortunately they have different syles, otherwise what's the point if everything fits like a Alpha AR?

    How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
    Chest:
With arms relaxed at your sides, measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your bust/chest.
    Waist:
Measure around your waist at the narrowest part.
    Hip:
Standing with feet hip width apart, measure around your hips at the widest part.
    Inseam:
From standing position, measure from your crotch to your ankle.
    Sleeve:
With arm relaxed at your side and slightly bent, measure from center back neck, across shoulder to elbow and down to wrist.
    Crotch to Floor:
With bare feet, measure from your crotch down the inside leg to the floor.
*Actual inseam length will vary depending on what Arc'teryx deemed suitable for end use footwear.
