Best business-style shell available

By far the best alternative for a waterproof shell that you can wear to work or play. Great use of tech (zippered pockets, heightened rear of the collar. Streamlined fit, looks good with dress pants or jeans. The tech of a true shell without looking like you just stepped off the trail.

Perfect

I’m 6 foot 3 inches, 210lbs. Purchased size Large. Sleeves are great length on me, first time in a long time they are long enough. Quality of material, zipper, and snaps at sleeve/neck are very nice. Note a slight “western” stitch along shoulder, I love it.

Perfect

I've had a Barbour coat for over 25 years and it works great in the rain. I needed something that would cover a suit jacket and didn't want to look like everyone else in the city. This coat checks off all the boxes: style, clean lines, great color, functional & practical. I love the two way zipper which makes driving and sitting on the train easy. . As an engineer, I appreciate the expert construction and attention to detail. I've seen several comments on sleeve length and concur that they are a bit long. Remember that this piece was designed for cyclists so the arm length is appropriate. The wrist closures seem to solve the long sleeve issues for me. Every time I put this coat on it gives me a bit of stoke - most of my outdoor kit is Arcteryx so it makes me feel like I'm headed to the mountains instead of the concrete jungle !

Thanks for the awesome review, Paul! Sounds like you found the perfect coat, stoked for you!

First pass: awesome

So far I'm really excited about this jacket. It looks like a very nice overcoat or old-school Mackintosh (which, I guess, it is...) but with the upgrade to Gore-Tex. Not a lot to say on features, what you see is what you get, but it looks great, and the Kingfisher color is a nice inky blue.

The main reason I'm reviewing is to address the sizing questions - I saw a lot of reviews criticizing the arm length and that was my biggest concern. The arms are longer than you'd expect for a typical overcoat, BUT consider it was built with cyclists in mind. That posture requires longer arms to cover the sleeves of your shirt. That said, I do have fairly long arms and the sleeves are still plenty long for me. The cuffs are adjustable, and I don't think the sleeves are so long that they look out of place. Non-issue for me.

6'1", athletic 190lbs, I went with a medium and it fits great. Room enough to layer a sweater or light insulated layer underneath, although it might be tight with a suit jacket.

Fantastic

75% of the time I have to wear a suit to work. I needed a versatile 3/4 length to accommodate a suit underneath. This does the job perfectly and for those times that I don’t wear a suit jacket, it doesn’t look like I am wearing a tent. So this works great for me.

However I am not giving it 5 stars for the fit because I don't think "fit" is a good criteria in helping you decide if this jacket is right for you as what fits me may not fit you at all.

So here is why I am giving it 5-stars:

Finish: Superb, stitching is sharp, straight and doesn’t bunch up the material. The cuts are definitely precise .

Materials: Top notch, high quality Gortex

Style: Crisp, tailored look, modern and yet won't go out of style with next season. I like the fact that there are only two pockets semi hidden outside of the jacket. Any more pockets and this jacket would look a little less formal and more utilitarian.

Versatility: Terrific, wear to a pub and not look overdressed, wear it to work and not look underdressed.

Functionality: The taped front zipper (instead of buttons) are my preference. I am looking for windproof and waterproof: buttons don't stop the wind like zippers do. Front pockets are zippered and taped as well. I appreciate the reflective material on the back collar. The collar also protects my neck really well. It’s amazing how this jacket transforms from one purpose to another. The front zipper is bidirectional: you can open it from the top or bottom if you're at a bathroom stall. There is no insulation in this jacket, just protection from wind and rain therefore it packs easily and weights next to nothing.

Color: Kingfisher is the color I purchased and is a perfect tint of Navy which eschews towards slate (not purple)....

This was a great purchase decision for me.

I wish they made an insulated version of this jacket. The dress versions of their insulated jackets all seem to have hoods, which is not a good look. Hope you see this Arcteryx. There is interested in a functional insulated coat that you can wear to work too. Fingers crossed.

Hey Matthew, I feel your pain. It would be nice to have one with insulation. Although with this particular jacket, I find it perfect as is because it allows me to layer up underneath without any issues.

Hi Paul could you do me a favor by measuring the pit to pit length , I need to see whether I can wear I rather think down jacket inside over a suit thanks

Mitch

I usually use XL in Arc'teryx. This time its way to big. I thought it might be sized as an overcoat to go over sport jackets and blazers but the sleeves are to narrow for that. I will exchange for a large and wear it over a dress shirt and tie

    How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
    Chest:
With arms relaxed at your sides, measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your bust/chest.
    Waist:
Measure around your waist at the narrowest part.
    Hip:
Standing with feet hip width apart, measure around your hips at the widest part.
    Inseam:
From standing position, measure from your crotch to your ankle.
    Sleeve:
With arm relaxed at your side and slightly bent, measure from center back neck, across shoulder to elbow and down to wrist.
    Crotch to Floor:
With bare feet, measure from your crotch down the inside leg to the floor.
*Actual inseam length will vary depending on what Arc'teryx deemed suitable for end use footwear.
